I actually started with Redhat 8, and _bought_ a boxed copy of Redhat 9 when it first came out.
After using Redhat 9 for a little while, I went 'hopping' because I wanted to see what else there was. I didn't bother with fedora core 1, but I tried mandrake, suse, and slackare. After doing this, I went to Fedora Core 2 and loved it.
After using FC2 for awhile, I didn't like some aspects of the operating system. I wanted something more integrated and more... complete.
I re-tried all the major distros (except debain. i don't know why i skipped it) and came back to Fedora Core 3 and fell in love with it again.
I was a windows user back in 2000-2001 and had never heard nor seen the word 'linux.' Since i'm new to the scene, I do not have the cultural perspective you do
"For all they're worth, at least Microsoft wrote almost all of windows."
HAH...
microsoft wrote their software! i haven't seen a joke that good on/. in awhile....
There is nothing wrong with Redhat. Do you think Mandrake is selling software they didn't write? of course they are! do you think novell is selling software they didn't write? ya... what about linspire? there are tons of comerical linux distros. I see nothing wrong with that. obviously you do.
If you don't like it, don't use it. RHEL and Fedora are still good linux distros. I have been 'distro hopping' for quite awhile now, and I was content with fedora (although i like the way ubuntu is heading)
fedora has 'yum' that does the same thing that 'apt-get' does.
that being said, i prefer 'apt-get' and synaptic for all my program installing/updating. Apt-get/synaptic are available for redhat/fedora
I got the supposed pop 'under' ad, as described in TFA
I am running Firefox 1.0 on Linux (Fedora Core 3), however i did not get a popup under Mozilla, nor did I get a popup in Opera
maybe some of us that must duel-boot with windows for gaming do not like the windows interface?
I use gnome in fedora core 3 myself, and on my desktop i have a duel boot with win2k for gaming. If i could install KDE and have a linux-like interface while in windows, i would not be disgusted while booting into it.
Also, it would be easy to aid in the adoption of linux, if people can get used to the interfaces BEFORE dropping windows completely. like someone said above: "baby steps"
I see MS ads all the time. they don't advirtise any "thing," just MS in general. They spout off something about they are letting you grow to your portential or similar bullshit
A few years ago when i took High school Calculus, I noticed that one MS comerical showed calc problems on the blackboard in a classroom that didn't even have a computer in it...
What about a high school student, college student, 'normal family', and myself, who is a pre-med student?
Linux is much more productive. take a look around; this is slashdot. Not every linux user goes to slashdot, many don't even care about computing news, they just want to WORK, which is what linux lets them do.
excuse me, but Opera (running in Fedora) uses a massive amount of memory when directly compared to Firefox.
I used to use Opera almost exclusively, but after I started taking notice to memory usage, I began to shun it.
It does have many features I miss, but the overall performance and superior rendering from Firefox caused me to leave it completely
Will it be able to sync with a palm?
I have never used OE/Outlook, and have always used mozilla mail/thunderbird, but I have never seen that it is compatible with hotsync. Will thunderbird/sunfire be able to do this?
run games including neverwinter nights, warcraft 3, and unreal tournament2k4 on my desktop with a geforece ti 4200 and an AMD athlon 2600.
this system runs fedora core 3 with gnome. i know i could get better performace with flux or xfce, but i get good enough performance with this set up
slack9 did that for me on my laptop as well
one question though: when i used slack9 on my laptop (currently FC2, but was primarily RH9 in the past), my touchpad didn't work.
and idea if this will 'automagically' work in slack10?
if people are going to start targetting mozilla for exploits, then we can see the true difference between security/stability of OSS vs proprietary products.
i have no doubt that mozilla will come out in the lead, because in being open source when there IS a problem, it is fixed in a timely manner:)
SuSE/Novell 'customers'
*cough* Linspire 'customers'
ya, linux only has 'bozos'... right

not to my knowledge
