How hard is it to insert a cd and reboot? (think 'linux live')
I repair a lot of people's computers, and set up networks for local businesses and consumers, and the windows XP install has NOTHING over modern linux installs. Linux is SO MUCH EASIER to install than windows xp.
You can't compare Windows to Linux, because we're not talking kernels here (remember? linux is a kernel...). What you CAN do is compare windows to linux operating systems.
SuSE/Mandriva/Ubuntu/RHEL/Fedora: Always works, Incredibly easy to install, extremely easy for non-technical people to use, incredibly easy to install new software, never require recompiling kernels unless your weird like that and feel like trying it out, and NO virii/malware/crashes/mysterious corruption
Gentoo/Slackware/whatever else: Mostly works, if you have a system capable of using it, can be difficult to install if you've never done one before, sometimes software may be difficult to install (source compiles; not intuitive) but usually easy (binaries, just like other linux listed above), all usability benefits of the other mentioned linux OS's.
How often does the average consumer recompile a windows kernel? what? never?! wow, neither do they have to in linux! it's a miracle!
PS: In windows you only update windows and MS-core applications. in Linux, you update EVERYTHING that came with the system. and MS usually waits as long as possible for updates, so, ya..
OS sales pre-windows are irrelevent because they would be proprietary UNIX OS's, and are NOT the same as x86 OS's. Most x86 OS's at the time were free
MS does NOT reduce prices, they INCREASE prices drastically and force everyone to pay a premium for software when consumers/corperate could be paying less for better software.
Oh... and MS is *NOT* responsible for bringing computers to the masses. You people (you, and a collective group of misinformed people) need to learn a little bit about the IT industry and its history (and in this case, MS's history) before you make blantantly incorrect ASSumptions
One important thing; if we had actual Standards, and not 'MS Standards' then we would not be bound to a single vendor. This is the important thing. If we break MS Standards and adopt actual Standards, then there will not be a vendor-specific standard and we would NEVER be in the prediciment we are in now. THAT is the difference.
Oh, and it pains me to know that you *like* microsoft. I see now hope is dwindling when morons like you decide to 'look the other way' and not realize the ovbiousness of MS' crimes that affect everyone
So it's groupthink if you realize that MS is fucking over the IT industry?
I think you need to re-evaluate the state of the industry and see that a crack in the windows near-monoply would probably lead to the downfall of MS as-we-know-it, which is good enough for me
MS probably has forseen their downfall, and is why they are spreading to other markets. I wouldn't mind the XBOX if MS's near-monoply was broken. until it is, i will continue to not patronize it, or any other low-quality MS products
Except that there is so little chance of life occuring the way it is today through evolution alone. I suppose I developed an 'intelligent design' belief, but there are WAY too many coincedences to support evolution alone.
You are right, in that it is mostly a political debate, not a scientific debate. He adverted the political side by making us decide for ourselves. Questions rose in my mind on how the complexity of modern life could have possibly happened 'by accident' or evolved to the level it has today. This is the point i'm trying to get at
(if anyone wishes to debate on why I think we are here because of evolution alone, think of all the physiological intricacies of the human body. the counter-current systems in the lungs, and of the nephrons in the kidneys. the remarkable ability to maintain homeostasis, and how meiosis magically mixes up dna to increase genetic diversity. Try to convince me that all of that -- and a ton more -- arived by accident from a bubbling pile of organic ooze (that somehow managed to arrange a plasma membrane, that's another discussion))
I am a recent graduate of our nation's public secondary educational system.
I can say for a fact that they are not hindering scientific education, in fact it's quite the opposite.
My biology teacher (of whom I now greatly respect) is very religous, but tought not to enforce biblical references (that's just rediculous), but 'taught the controversy' and let us decide for ourselves. To be specific evolution vs creationism. He never said 'this is what happened' or 'this is the only accepted version of how we ____', it mentioned both, and some lesser ideas as well. He taught us to evaulate and not to laugh at the strange ideas.
As far as I know, that would be the best way to address the issue. My teacher showed us the facts, theories, and possibilities that exist, and demanded that we (through essays/tests and such) demonstrate full knowledge of what the scientific community knows and what current theories entail.
How would that inhibit science?
(note to the grammer/spelling nazis: while I'm a student of science, I abhor anything related to those 'English' classes that test on spelling, so tough:-P)
Except you are quite wrong about MS waiting to be "fasionably late".
They are already "working* on IE. Firefox is the reason your (presumably) beloved XP SP2 has a lot of the features it has. Firefox is the reason longhorn will have IE7 and not a patched IE6. Firefox is the reason IE7 will have "tabbed browsing" (haha... anyway...).
MS has put many programming hours into IE; the fact that you don't know about it is reason enough to believe MS to be inept.
No wonder MS isn't worried that much. it has stockholders like you who don't pay attention and don't know any better. It thrives on fools like you
This east vs west thing has been going on much longer than recent history. All the way back past the crusades, back to greeks vs persians.
There has always been hatred in general, not just hatred of us meddling in their affairs. If we leave the region and take our money with us, they will hate us for that. if we stay and continue to pump money into the area, (most) will be thankful for the benefits, and some will hate us (muslim radicals).
I have been using my first mac (powerbook) for almost a month now, and i can say that NeoOffice/J does a much better job for a user in mac os x than the X11 version of OpenOffice.
Since Neo is based on OpenOffice, and I am familiar with it from my use of Linux and Windows, Neo is simply the best choice!
The only bad part; There won't be an implementation of a native version of OpenOffice 2.0 for awhile.
I'm not sure if this is because of my experience in high school, but i like the simplistic layout of MS word more than OOo 1.1 writer. I prefer the OOo 1.9 writer and 1.9 presentation layout; but don't see these coming to the Mac very soon (outside of the X11 implementation)
Wow.....
i'm not the only one that plays/likes heros 4!
I have not been able to get many games to run well under cedega. with that in mind, World of Warcraft runs well in FC3 with cedega
Other than that; if it doesn't have a native linux port, i have to boot windows
Back when I used windows, I hated aol's client, and i found gaim. I tried the windows port and liked it.
when I converted to linux, I found gaim already pre-installed. I also tried kopete, but i liked gaim client more. maybe because it resembles the aol client without all the crap, and offers more features than I was used to before
I'll probably eventually look into other clients. for now gaim works flawlessly (if only it had ichat compatibility)
I actually run KDE, but i have gnome components running inside of it
my reason: i like the gnome applets MUCH more than the kde applets, and i was unable to make my exact set up using solely KDE
I used to use all gnome, but KDE really does, in my opinion, work better as a DE... gnome just has added benefits, and if you have the resources; why not get the best of both worlds!

christian beleif's aside, do you know ANYTHING about human development?
A beating heart 2 weeks after conseption... that's right! before most people know of the pregnancy the human baby already has working organs. weeks later the skeleton is already ossifying and the human form is taking shape.
by the time the human is born, it is a fully functional THINKING human being. what do you think babies do? they are constantly taking in data and processing it. one reason why they sleep so much is because of the magnitude they have to process and learn from.

I haven't timed it, but I bet i could get at least 6 hours out of it if i'm careful
do you mean Ubuntu, or is there a spin-off of ubuntu that i don't know about?
it is F/OSS, they won't charge money for it (if they did, you can still get it legally free)

you *RESPECT* their business tactics? do you even KNOW what they do? They are far from a caring corperation that wishes to compete in a fair market.
If you do not beleive they are the most corrupt organization of our time, do check out this nifty site Google.

The TAR and RPM are available here: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/7x/7.0/
HARDWARE
next time, RTFA
It is a well organized, seemingly well programmed open source bit torrent client
I have never seen the official bit torrent client on their web site... it has always told me to search for the rpm's
