  1. I don't want a Swiss Army knife eReader on Amazon Announces Kindle 2, With Slew of New Features · · Score: 1

I don't want a Swiss Army knife eReader: I want a dedicated eReader of the right size, which (very important) disappears when I read --just like a book disappears. I wouldn't read a paper book if it were the size of a phone.

When I'm reading and I'm involved, the most I want to do is a quick look up in a dictionary or encyclopedia (both of which Kindle provides). I don't want to do much else: Not check my email, not get a phone call, not watch a video, not play games, not SMS, not a thing.

The one time cost of $359 is nothing. Just like a phone, the HW cost is nothing compared to the recurring service costs. I feel fine paying authors for good writing. The DRM issue will work itself out over time. Plus there are free eBooks available too.

I love the idea of saving my precious shelf space for books that need to be on paper.

  2. Re:One step closer... on Writely.com Beta - Google's Answer to Word · · Score: 2, Informative

The difference is now everyone can register an active account. Before all you could do was give them your email so they could tell you when it would be available.

FYI: Like many Google services, Writely is still in beta even now.

  3. It aint broke on US Keeps Control of the Internet · · Score: 2, Insightful

Usually I'm not for the U.S. having special treatment (equal treatment under law), but I'll make an exception for the Internet. It works, it aint broke, it's internationally very libre and practically gratis. Everyone is also free to explore variations, fixes, improvements, etc. but this should be tested by techies and not bureaucrats.

I'm sure we'll eventually truly integrate Unicode in URIs but since ASCII and the Latin alphabet are at the heart of the C-like languages, *NIX, and Microsoft, it will never go away in computers. Unless of course we have to convert to alien computer technology.

  4. Re:What about Canvas? on 29 Vector Drawing Programs · · Score: 1

I've been using Canvas for the past several versions and it is an awesome product that does vector and raster to a high degree of sophistication for only $350. It's like Illustrator and Photoshop combined.

Canvas was bought from Deneba by ACD Systems, but Canvas is so good that I hope that an even bigger fish buys it so more people can appreciate it too.
