"640K is more memory than anyone will ever need" - Richard Stallman, 9/14/1988
He can't have said that. GNU Emacs never fit in 640K.

Lockyer is not running for Governor, he is running for State Treasurer. And an earlier writer asked what Lockyer's take was going to be and if he would buy a Bentley. The answer is zero (dollars) and no, no Bentley. He is the attorney general of California, and is suing on behalf of the state. (He will of course, get some political benefits, so the post about running for governor is on the right track in that sense.)

While I hesitate to defend college athletics -- certainly there are a great many problems with football and basketball, particularly -- it is not accurate to claim the taxpayers fund these programs.

Quite the contrary, the reason schools often turn a blind eye to the recruiting shenanigans in major college sports is because they are huge money makers, both directly and in alumni fund-raising.

  8. Re:Rare? on "Blue Moon" Appears in Sky Saturday Night · · Score: 1
This is an interesting article. There is more to blue moons than I realized.

It was particularly interesting to me since I just saw Tom Skilling (a Chicago television meteorologist) describe how two blue moons in a month was the wrong definition and four in a season is correct. He even mentioned the 1946 Sky and Telescope article as the reason for the confusion.

I suspect he read this later Sky and Telescope article, but reading it I realize that even his "correction" is bit of an over-simplification.

It makes me want to go back to defining a blue moon as a very rare event involving dust, etc. in the atmosphere and the moon actually appearing to be blue.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the similarity to Apple's Spotlight search technology, part of the forthcoming Tiger Mac OS X release.

It seems Apple and Microsoft are thinking a lot alike these days. (What with Apple threatening to sue RealMedia over DRM.)

At least, that is Apple's position. As a moral issue, I am not 100% with them, but FairPlay is not open source, and Apple would seem to like it that way.
