My SO had no problems buying a house on $50K CAD/year. The house she bought was above the median on price too. Shes saved up enough to do >$10K in upgrades in the year since she moved in too.

While NYC has done a remarkable job in lowering its crime rate (down 80% in a few years), it is still nowhere near Toronto. The five boroughs murder rate of 70/million is still 3x higher than torontos 24/million.
The same holds true for the national averages.
