I guess the anon... says everything, but...
It takes 5 to 20 minutes for a trojan to infect an XP box. Then script kiddies use it for DOS attacks. Viruses use it to spam, etc etc etc.
Haven't you been reading your slashdot lately?
I run Win XP on my gaming rig. Its pretty nice, honestly. I love HL2.
I removed XP at work and installed Linux. Now I'm so much more efficient using our unix boxes. Native makes total sense there. The Dilbert strip on Sunday was about me and my IS department.
My wife runs XP. And even with a hardware firewall, AVG, and Ad-Aware, she still gets hit with something once in a while. (she can't run SP2 on her PIII-600, it crawls badly. I had to reinstall to get rid of it so her print menu wouldn't stop for 25 seconds everytime she tried to print)
I honestly believe that security is becoming more and more important, and MS has not yet done enough to even slow down that momentum. People are really getting fed up with spam, viruses, etc etc etc.
Who cares?
I'm using KDE because it works, its free, and its not riddled with viruses, worms, trojans, spy ware, and BSODs. It doesn't have to be reboot every week to keep it from slowing down or crashing less.
Is KDE as pretty as Avalon?
Probably not.
Is it as fast?
Maybe not.
But can someone hack my linux box and make it a denizen of spamer evils?
Not bloody likely.

When I was in High School, Apple was practically giving away Apple IIe's. When I was a senior the library got its first Mac. I was blown away by the resolution of the monochrome display.
Apple got market share back then by supporting students, and it looks like they are moving back to that model.
To be honest, if they wanted to scare the crap out of Microsoft, they'd port OS X to x86 and sell it for $50.00.
If they wanted to bleed MS dry, quickly, they'd open source the OS X GUI and guts.
It isn't the iPod's doing. Its OS X. Its GUI Rocks. I'd run it too if I could get it for x86 processors.
The amazing thing is, now that Processors are fast enough for the average user, the raw power of the CPU is less important and the GUI matters more.
That's why people are _contemplating_ Linux or switching to Mac.
How is suing Diebold going to help anyone or the situation any? Don't you think we should save the damn money for some good systems? I mean can we even get enough money form them to pay for the stupid law suit? Pointless. The only people who benefit from this lawsuit is the lawyers.

They didn't do it to attract employees. They did it to keep them from starving to death.
They made 'em work 100 hour weeks, missing large chunks of their lives and the food was just one way to keep 'em from going home.

Nope. They intend to prove that life existed on Mars. Then they intend to prove there's oil on Mars. Then they intend to go drill for it...
And if not Oil, then some other "valuable" resource.

The tide is turning. I can feel it.

Someone could port Open Office to OS-X, and Apple wouldn't even have to have a part in it.
I'll bet this is already happening.
