    Emmett Plant, "journalist" on slashdot.

    Feeling bitter, Jay?

You've got all the right in the world to question my journalistic integrity. As a matter of fact, I welcome it. But unless you've got a problem the facts or the way I present them, chill out. If I've said something untrue in my work, you've got a responsibility as a reader to point it out. You haven't done that, though.

Stories are not created in a vacuum. As a reporter, I rely on relationships with people to get my job done. As a writer, I rely on the English language to convey facts to the audience.

The worst part is that you can't see beyond your own personal problems and outright bitterness to understand that Interhack does some very important work, and that this story is important to anyone who does business online.

What do you want me to say, Jay? Clyde clued me in to the Interhack press release. I work with Clyde on Time City. Clyde pointed me to it because he thought it was newsworthy. It was. I did some research, got together with Jamie, and we wrote the piece. I didn't write the piece as a favor to Clyde. Matter of fact, I don't even know if Clyde is involved with Interhack. I think he's related to Matt, though. Actually, I think you'd be amazed how many stories are submitted to me and Slashdot by personal friends that I reject. What do you want from me?

I don't find where you work and post things about the quality of your work. I don't question your professional integrity, because I really don't understand or know what you do for a living. At this point, I don't care. You just seem like someone who was really burned and you're working out your 'angry ex-girlfriend' mojo on me for some unknown reason.

I'm sorry you didn't like the article.

Slashdot used to get worse on a monthly basis, then weekly, now it's with every post.

Then don't read it. Apparently it's causing you undue stress.

Oh, but watching anime is part of the geek stereotype so /. must cater to it, promote it, and make as much money as they can from it. Hypocrites.

Actually, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't watch anime, which I do. I thought it was interesting news. I posted it. So, you don't like it. Sorry, I apologize. This may come as a bit of a surprise, but I don't think everyone in the world will like everything I post.

I watch anime. I thought the news was interesting. I posted it. Sorry if I offended your delicate sensibilities.

Also, people shouldn't get too wrapped up in the whole 'News for Nerds' mantra, either. Besides, ever been to an anime film festival? Nerds, nerds, nerds. I'm glad to count myself among their ranks. Accepting an oft-misunderstood artform from a culture on the other side of the world is usually not the 'coolest' thing in the world to do, but you may like it if you give it a chance.

It's nice to see that /. editors can promote themselves so as to receive the attention of aging punk rockers and all that, but what I'm questioning is the validity of this discussion in the first place.

I mean, who is really interested in what is happening to a magazine in England? Anyone? Why can't we have more important stories about stuff that directly affects us as Americans, and leave the rest of the world to their half-baked socialist fantasies. America is the greatest nation on Earth and what happens here will affect everyone, and so American issues are the real things that need to be discussed here. Anything else is of secondary importance.

Censorship affects us all. If the UK passes stupid legislation that promotes censorship online, it means that in the states, I'm being stopped from viewing the information.

This is not a gay issue, it's not even a newspaper/magazine issue. This is a clear-cut censorship and anti-competition issue.

Emmett, why must you emphasize the nationality of a project or its leaders?

Okay, well, you got moderated down as Flamebait, but I think you deserve a response.

The truth of the matter is that I'm a really, really big fan of 80's Music, including Wall of Voodoo's 'Mexican Radio.' As I was formatting this interview, I read through the bit where Miguel was talking about Mexico and raw materials, and the song started going through my head. That's why it was the topic.

This problem goes much beyond Emmett. Whereever I see open source or Free Software mentioned, I invariably see the nationalities of the authors prominently mentioned, as though their native countries were more important than their names.

I think what you're seeing is not an attempt at racism or prejudice, but rather a celebration of the Free Software movement's globality and willingness to accept hard-working individuals from any nation, any land. I'm sorry that you took my comment as a racist one. I know Miguel probably wouldn't.

Guess what people, Speilberg is a great director. You can say what you want about his movies, but he has an uncanny way of filming movies the way they need to be seen. Films like Jurassic Park, ET, and Back to the Future sold a lot of merchandise, yes, and were targeted at mainstream America.

Check your facts. Steven Spielberg didn't direct Back to the Future, Robert Zemeckis did. Back to the Future stands as a new film classic, for obvious reasons. Zemeckis' attention to detail made BTTF a super-smash.

Steven Spielberg was the Executive Producer of the film, and had little to do with the day-to-day filming of the movie.
