  1. Headaches on Simulator Sickness Cures? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I seem to get a really bad headache and some nausea after playing Half-Life for a long time. I have a decent computer with a Geforce 2 GTS, so I know I have a high framerate and response time. I've finally concluded that it is probably from the fact that to open a door, you have to run into it... and having my face 1-inch away from a door isn't something I'm used to doing. The headache stems from trying to focus on something that close to you, or rather, that your mind thinks is that close to you, but not being able to. I keep trying to focus, but it's never going to happen.

As far as solutions go? Beats me... if only I could play HL with all the doors already opened. :-)

  2. Cat-5 noise on Fluorescent Lights Magically Activates iMac? · · Score: 3, Informative

My guess would be cat-5 noise. I've had problems with my computer turning on erratically whenever I plugged/unplugged a port, or jiggled a loose connection. For whatever reason, the noise on the network woke it up. I finally just turned off WOL, since I wasn't really using it for anything... just playing.

Try putting more distance between the hub/switch and the light, and see if it still causes it to happen. I wouldn't imagine the light could cause much interference over more than a few feet or so. You might also try hooking up another machine, and monitoring all the electrical activity on the network. Myabe something will poke up.

  3. I'm taking it... on Provigil Extends Your Day? · · Score: 1

It works pretty well. My doc has me on it in conjunction with some depression meds since I have trouble feeling awake during the day and concentrating. I haven't noticed any side effects (like feeling stupid that someone else mentioned), although the first few days I was on it, I was awake for 36 hours, asleep for 12. But after a week, I settled into a good 8 sleep, 16 awake. And I feel 100% better. I can actually wake up in the morning(!), assuming I go to bed before 12. I don't think this drug would be a good replacement for sleeping. It would definitely help you feel more awake, but aside from the adapting period at the start, it's not something that will keep you awake for days on end. And besides... it's EXPENSIVE. Way more than my other meds... thank goodness for insurance.

  4. What has Dmitry been up to? on Sklyarov Update · · Score: 1

Having attended his bail hearing earlier this month, I know he's been in 3rd party custody and required to stay in Northern CA, and check in periodically. Anyone know what he's been doing the last 3 weeks, besides working with the lawyers for a defense? Seems like he'd at least take a little bit of advantage in a forced stay in NorCal, but then again, I've never been in his position either.

  5. Host some other sites on Financing Growing Websites? · · Score: 1

You've got the infrastructure set up already, so just sell some space and bandwidth to people for sites that probably aren't going to pull much traffic. Charge enough for hosting and get enough low traffic sites, and it'll pay for your high traffic, no profit site. But then you do have the extra hassle of actually being a business, and needing to deal with clients.
