  1. Bandwidth issues? on Juggernaut GPLd Search Engine · · Score: 1

Sounds nice but isn't the bigger concern for something like that the amount of bandwidth it would use to catalog all those pages?

Sure it will run on a PII but does it need a T3 to run efficiently?

  2. A magazine about the industry in general... on Are Computer Magazines Dead? · · Score: 1

I would be interested in a good computer magazine which is about the computing industry in general.

With articles about new companies and financial issues as well as technical breakthroughs etc. Aimed towards people who are interested in reading about what all the major players are doing to shape the industry without dumbing it down or filling it with advertising

  3. They Might Be Giants also leading the way on Mp3 Albums and Players Supported by Stars · · Score: 2
For anybody who didn't know, They Might Be Giants recently released an mp3 only album. In addition they started their own streaming mp3 radio station and are starting to develop a strong partnership with Emusic

Check out the album, Long Tall Weekend, and radio station at:

  4. Way too vague... on Sony to Release Digital Walkman · · Score: 1

    No mention of capacity? Features?

They just seem to be announcing another portable mp3 player except with this one you have to convert all your music to their proprietery format first....

Anyone have a clue how much storage space one of these might be able to support?

  6. Re:The clean interface won't last on Google is launched! · · Score: 1

Well, as I recall hearing several months back on Slashdot, they have quite a few investors. Here is a snip from their about Google page:Google, which is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., was founded in 1998 by two Stanford Ph.D. students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who now serve as chief executive officer and president, respectively. The privately held company announced in June 1999 that it had secured $25 million in equity funding led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Other investors include Stanford University; Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and current vice president at Cisco Systems; and Ram Shriram, who has held the positions of president of Junglee and vice president of Business Development at Amazon.com.

So, I think they can keep the uncluttered look, at least till the $25 million runs out! :)

  7. It could be good... on Spielberg to direct Kubrick's AI · · Score: 1

    Subject matter is interesting...

And, despite the knee-jerk reactions to the contrary, Spielberg has made some good movies...

Considering that Kubrick himself was considering letting him direct it this may be quite interesting.

  8. Percentage based bonuses/penalties perhaps on On the Subject of Trolls · · Score: 1

I think the ideas you laid out are very good Rob... certainly would help.

However, why only give benefits to people who post tons of good comments and penalties to those who have already posted tons of band ones. Wouldn't it make more sense to be some sort of ratio system?

If somebody makes 5 posts and all of them get moderated up by an average of 3 points give them the benefit. I know that I don't post very often at all but when I do I try to make them intelligent and to the point...

Also, conversely, when somebody only has posted a couple times but the posts are -2 on average nail them right away. Don't let them cheat the system at all for their personal pleasure...

But anyway you do it, I think it is a good idea for making the community more comfortable for all!

  11. Why so worried? on Amazon Posts User Purchasing Data · · Score: 2

From what I can see, although not particularly fair to initiate without asking domain owners, this is pretty harmless.

There is no information about specific users or specific things purchased by specific users... it is just an aggregate collection. It is essentially the same as saying what the best selling items are on their site, except this is broken down into meaningful catagories...

I don't see why there is a big fuss over it

  14. Hold off on the excitement... on Red Hat Announces IPO · · Score: 1

I know we all love the idea of a company like Red Hat offering stock. It is an opportunity to support people we love and show that linux has a future.

However, sit back and think a little. Red Hat is still available for free download. The strength of the company as a money making entity is quite questionable.

If you read their S-1 filing you will see that they went from losing over $100,000 a year... to making a few thousand a year in 1998, to LOSING $91,000 a year in 1999 (year ending Februrary 28)

Now a lot of companies that lose money are still good investments. Amazon.com being the clear example. And if you believe that Red Hat has a way to increase profits in the future then go for it. But in terms of money making potential, and potential growth of the stock I would be wary about jumping in with a lot of money right away

What is the difference between this and a personal airplane or jet?

This just looks like a less expensive oddly shaped personal jet airplane. You are going to need a pilot's license to use one and I am guessing you would have to take off and land and airports... I seem to be missing the "car" part of this whole thing... any thoughts?

How can you post saying that you have a right to post your opinions and in the same post say that "I don't DARE say the rest of us somehow..." etc...

The point is that we all have our opinions and my opinion is that the majority of posters on here are attacking Leonardo DiCaprio and the movies in general for really inconsequential reasons.

If I want to state this belief and criticize what I see as being a lack of maturity of a group of posters then I have every right to do so and I assumed people would realize that I was stating my *opinion* just as you did...

  19. The lack of maturity of slashdotters on Leo DiCaprio in next Star Wars? · · Score: 4

I like reading the stories on slashdot, but in the last couple weeks I have become totally disgusted with the users of slashdot.

You fit all the immature whiny nerd images I can think of. You start off cool by liking something as brilliant as the Star Wars trilogy and then don't have the maturity or intelligence to handle the new films at all. 95% of the discussion on Jar Jar and Anakin et al has been whiny crap from people complaining that certain parts of these movies aren't how THEY would have planned them.

What happened to your faith in George Lucas and the story itself? You loved what he did with the other movies and now when he is inspired to continue the saga you rip him to shreads. I think you should all take a step back and realize you aren't the only ones in the world and that your little nitpicks are stupid, selfish, and annoying to the rest of us.

In terms of Leonardo DiCaprio. Before Titanic he was regarded as one of the premiere young actors. Films such as "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "The Basketball Diaries" being two of his critically acclaimed roles. Even Woody Allen casted him in his last movie because he was a good ACTOR, not to get girls to see the film.

I think this rumor is probably not true but if he was cast he would probably be one of the better actual actors to be in a Star Wars film. You people should like this especially because of some of your whining about Jake Lloyd's Anakin in TPM. And in terms of him tainting the role? I mean come on... Titanic was one movie... unfortunately it gave him a reputation and became something horrible in terms of what it did to our countries movie industry. However, for you people to turn against the possibility of this casting just based on this one movie is shortsighted, ignorant, and again immature.

I know some people here are not like the majority of posters but I just really wanted to get this out because a lot of the people here need to grow the hell up
