  1. Umm I'm not so sure on Disney Suggests Mandating DRM On All Media · · Score: 2, Interesting

I find it hard to believe that this will happen but maybe I'm just being naive. Can anyone explain to me how the FCC is going to regulate the entire world? Heck the RIAA (or Canadian version) hasn't stopped file sharing in Canada and its unclear whether or not it is illegal to so in Canada. Won't other countries continue to make devices that can record audio broadcasts and/or from the Internet? Sure they can make feeds that require a special player to play but there is nothing stopping a person from recording the sound played through their speakers and circulating that around. Also, last time I checked, I can tune into my local radio station and record it either on a cassette tape or onto my computer very easily and distribute it in other formats on servers located in other countries. Am I missing something here?

Besides what the others have said about PHP, I particularly found that making dynamic images was a big plus for me. Using GD and truetype add ons was incredibly easy.

I love being able to make dynamic thumbnails with less than 10 lines of code.
I also found it useful for generating maps. You store the plot points in the database and generate the map and the legend on the fly. Useful for real estate/oil well/garage sale applications, to name just a few.

I'm sure you probably can do this kind of stuff with other languages but PHP makes it dead easy.

Want to have it so the user can select the quality of images they see on the webpage based on their connection? You can do it with one line!!! (well changing the image quality that is).
Also neat is that you can take a huge image (like a map) and chop it into 8.5 x 11 chunks so that it prints well on all printers.

The great thing is, I was able to teach myself this stuff by just looking at the manual.

Ok ok I'll stop parading this language around, but I definately think there is a place for PHP and think you should give it a fair chance. Now if only I could have the desire to learn ASP (so many job postings are asking for it as a skill).

Your post brings up an interesting question. Is setting up a site so that people can donate to your cause make it a commerical purpose?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when a presidential candidate is campaigning and receives a donation, nobody considers that as a commercial purpose. But is it any different when it comes to a parody or a satire?

  6. These guys were on Leno this week on JibJab Sues for Fair Use of Right to Parody · · Score: 5, Interesting

The brothers Gregg and Evan Spiridellis appeared on Jay Leno earlier this week talking about their website and how popular it has become over the past months.

I give these guys Kudos for having the balls to try to make a living off of making these online cartoons.

In the interview, they said that they make money off of donations and they joked that they'd just have enough money from this "Your land is my land" cartoon to pay one month's rent and maybe a few meals.

I hope they are allowed to continue what they are doing but unfortunately, i'm not familiar with american copyright laws.

  8. Ugh thats slow! on Sony's "iPod killer" Fails to Draw Blood · · Score: 2, Interesting

    From the article:
For my test, I used a very modest collection of 431 standard MP3 files. SonicStage 2 refused to transfer 15 of the files, posting a nonsensical error message. After that, it took an agonizingly long two hours and 13 minutes to transfer the remaining 416 tracks to the Walkman. By contrast, Apple's iTunes software transferred all 431 songs to an iPod in about four minutes.

What happens for the rest of us who have a lot more than 431 mp3s? Do we leave our computer running for a week just converting the files? Does anyone know if Sony has ripping software so that we could convert our cds into their format?

I think I'll pass. I love my iPod.
