  1. Re:Really? Check this (plz don't mod down) on Any Reason To Buy Microsoft? · · Score: 3, Informative
I'm pretty sure this dude is just trolling but this is too irritating to pass up.

An important factor in Linux' cost is its maintenance. Linux requires a *lot* of maintenance, work doable only by the relatively few high-paid Linux administrators that put themselves - of course willingly - at a great place in the market. Linux seems to be needing maintenance continuously, to keep it from breaking down.
I don't have experience running any truly important systems, but the boxes I have administered have required almost zero maintenance. Unless I go and screw something up, I have found in my experience that it'll keep on chugging along. Besides the occassional ssh upgrade, I havn't had to touch anything on my NAT box since I installed it three years ago. It Just Works.

Add to this the cost of loss of data. Linux' native file system, EXT2FS, is known to lose data like a firehose spouts water when the file system isn't unmounted properly.
References please. If you are going to make statements this damning you are obligated to provide data backing you up.

Crashes in Linux are a regular thing, and nobody seems to know what causes them, internally. Linux advocates try to hide this fact by denying crashes ever happen. Instead, they have frequent "hardware problems".
Of all of the computers I have owned in the past seven years, all ran linux and one of them crashed once for a reason not attributed to hardware failure. This bug was reported to the kernel developers and was fixed within a few hours.

The steep learning curve compared to about any other operating system out there is a major factor in Linux' cost.
Given a little work by the admin, linux can be dumbed down as much as you need it to be (corporate environment assumed). Oh, you ever installed one of the BSDs? I assure you, linux is nothing. (Disclaimer: I have nothing against the BSDs, they are damn fine operating systems in their own right)

The system is a mix of features from all kinds of unices, but not one of them is implemented right. A Linux user has to live with badly coded tools which have low performance, mangle data seemingly at random and are not in line with their specification.
And would you like to tell us precicely what tools you are speaking of, as well as what your major beef is with them? Or how about one step better: go file some bug reports!

On top of that a lot of them spit out the most childish and unprofessional messages, indicating that they were created by 14-year olds with too much time, no talent and a bad attitude.
Attacking the people you are setting your case against is a sure sign of a weak argument. Also see last paragraph.

I could go on and on and on, but the conclusion is clear. Linux is not an option for any one who seeks a professional OS with high performance, scalability, stability, adherence to standards, etc.
So what are you reccomending for us to use? I beg of thee, please share your infinite knowledge.

  2. What is wrong with these people? on PATRIOT II Legislation Leaked · · Score: 2, Interesting

It really bothers me the blatant disregard that our elected officals have for what once used to be a wonderful country. I understand that they are trying to do good (I hope), but they seem to have forgotten that government is supposed to be FOR the people, BY the people. The founding fathers encouraged us to distrust the government which is exactly why it was given limited powers to work within. By allowing bills like this pass into law we as citizens are showing a criminal amount of disregard for the future of this nation. Your citizenship is not a free ride, with it comes responsibilities as well as privelidges and rights. Nobody likes what is happening, but nobody seems to be doing anything more than just bitch. Let's quit our bitching and finally do something about it!

  3. Hypocrisy? on China Concerned About Internal Copyright Infringers · · Score: 4, Insightful

It seems that despite almost no support on slashdot of any other intellectual property protection scheme, when it's the Chinese pirating American stuff it's a horrible crime. But when it's Americans pirating anyone else's works, including those by other Americans, it's something that should be protected. Make up your goddamn minds people! I personally think that the United States government has it's collective head up it's ass, but the premise for copyright is very well intentioned: give the producer of a work a temporary monopoly for their contribution to society. Back on topic... when you can honestly say that you support the MPAA, RIAA, and every other four letter organisation ending in AA it'll be fair for you to say that the Chinese pirates are wrong, but for the moment I suspect that most of the people posting about the evils of China are guilty of the same crime they are condemning.

I personally wouldn't put it past the idiots running the united states to do such a thing. Just look at the shit they've passed in the last few years; the trend is continuing downward and it seems that the time of free computing is drawing to an end. Maybe I'll just save up enough cash to buy a small plot of land in the mountains, grow/hunt my own food and generally ignore human society for the rest of my days. Or I could move to a country that isn't full of morons. I'm leaning towards Canada but I'm open to opinions...

Actions such as this could be interpreted as offences under slander/libel laws I would think. That would be a perfectly libertarian way of doing it. It's not that it was blocked that is the problem, it's the reason that it was blocked. Saying something is hate speech rather than just saying "you should be working, don't look at this" is a *VERY* large difference.

Nobody is going to put a gun to your head and say "you are going to work here." If you care enough about the policies you will quit and find another company that does not do that. If enough people care, enough people will quit, and the company goes tits up.

Look where we are today after a little over two hundred years of this mentality. Keeping out altogether forces the Internet to stay free, no compromises.
