Have you ever watched a cop go through a red light? The siren is always on, the lights are always on, and they slow down to make sure the intersection is clear. They want to run into someone about as much as someone wants a speeding cop to run into them. That's just common sense. As for the speeding, police are trained for high-speed driving, and they have regularly maintained vehicles, which is more than can be said about most people on the road. It is also common knowledge in the police world that brakes are the *MOST* important part of the vehicle.
These days it is 'hip' and 'cool' to be anti-American. They fail to see the long term goals in Iraq. Installing a successful liberal democracy in the heart of the middle east is the only way to bring lasting peace to the region and the world.
"Installing democracies" has yet to work for us, and we've been trying all over the place for the past 50 years. Nevermind the fact that the United States helped put Saddam in power in the first place, and we we gave him the weapons.
Your example of the AIDS help that America gives to Africa is just one small example of the terrible hypocrisy that plagues the American hating world. No other country has sacrificed so much and given so much for complete strangers and yet you only see protestors in NYC protesting Bush's 15 billion dollar AIDs policy but you never see them protesting Europe's 0 dollar AIDs policy.
That's all well and good that americans are generous, but why should anyone be forced (as in if you don't you go to jail) to help pay for programs which they do not support? I'd donate money if I had more after taxes to helping Africa's AIDS epidemic, but I wouldn't let my dogma get wrapped up in it. And you miss the crucial point of living in a "free" democracy: that you can say what you want. By expressing an opposing opinion they are well within their rights withing the constituion. People don't hate america, they love it, and that's why they don't want it to go down the shitter.
I believe the only candidate which can offer the security the world needs at this vital point in history is Bush.
Enzyme solutions are usually water based, which considering the dwell times needed for them to actually break down the organic material, would not probably be very good for the bits that you're trying to clean.
Actually, some Servpro franchises do clean up crime scenes, as well as meth labs, fires, tornadoes, sewage, water damages, pretty much any kind of heavy-duty cleaning. A couple of the guys I work with are actually in Florida (we are from North Carolina) right now helping clean up after Francis. They were screaming for help after Charlie, they don't need Ivan too.
I work for Servpro, so sadly, cleaning is something that I know how to do fairly well. Your best bet would probably be to do some research into ultrasonic cleaners. It might be cheaper to buy the equipment yourself depending on how much stuff you need cleaned. Protein odors are pretty hard to get rid of though, definitely one of the worst.
I'll be sticking with my trusty IBM Model M thank you very much. Can't beat $5 at the thrift store for the best keyboard I've ever typed on. There is a company that makes these type of keyboards, although their name slips my mind, and you can get them customized any way you like if you have the cash.
Well that guy is an idiot. So is the mythical LSD user that thought he could fly and jumped out a window. *RESPONSIBLE* drug use only hurts the user, and depending on which drugs they are doing that is debatable as well. I have actually been given many insights into my own psyche by using LSD, and use of that drug is directly responsible for much of who I am today. While I agree that being impaired behind the wheel is wrong (my best friend was killed by a drunk driver several years ago), being impaired in your own residence does no harm to those outside your home. You need to make the distinction between private acts and public acts. Driving on LSD is most certainly a public act and endangers all around you.
At least on the 7-11 point of sale system, after you hit OK your signature pops up on the screen for verification against the card. That's the theory anyway. My point was that the signature collected by the pad is nearly useless as the resolution is so low. As long as you get the general gist of the signature right, it is indistinguishable from the real thing signed on the pad.
What about the electronic signature pads in use at many stores, well, everywhere? I used to work at a 7-11, and I can tell you firsthand that the resolution *SUCKS* on these things. Nevermind that they don't take pressure readings. When we first got them my manager signed it with her real name, then "Micky Mouse". I couldn't tell the difference. It'd still be useful for things traditionally signed on paper (insurance policies, etc..), but as far as debit and credit transactions the majority (and a growing number of) of transactions will be unverifiable by this method.
The best thing about buddhism is that it doesn't try to come up with explanations, well about anything that does not pertain to one's enlightenment. The buddhist answer to where we came from: we don't know, ask a scientist, but we can tell you how to leave. The buddhist religion does not rely faith nearly as much as other religions, in fact it invites you to question the dogma in order for you to more fully understand it. In the most basic form of the buddha's teachings, the only thing that I have found that relies on faith is a belief in karma and rebirth. Everything else is just philosophy and phychology.
I was raised Catholic, which may or may not qualify depending on your point of view. My point was that if you screwed up, you just get cast back into the fray, albeit with lower karma. Feeling sorry for what you did does nothing. You must look into the nature of the sin and understand for yourself why it is wrong. You must also understand the nature of your own mind so you do not repeat it. Buddhism provides a map of everyone's psyche. All people are ruled by desires, and when these desires, be them physical, mental, or otherwise, will result in pain when eventually crushed. One must learn to quell the desire within themselves. Only through that will one reach true understanding. Once all desire is removed, including the desire to remove desire (aagh.. head explodes), enlightenment and perfect understanding is acheived. Otherwise you just get reborn with your standing determined by your karma. The idea that you can live a horrible life and be rewarded for it with paradise because you repent is absolutely ludicrous to me. It defies logic that an infinitely wise creator would create two distinct places for people to go when they kick the bucket. Why just two? Why not three? In the end it's all arbitrary, even what I beleive in. It just makes the most sense to me though, and you are free to choose what makes the most sense to you. Now if only science could answer that question...
Buddha actually translates to "The Enlightened One".
The thing with Buddhism is that there is no central dogma. Different sects have different beliefs, some actually believe in gods to an extent, however the general understanding between them is that some will be better off taking different paths. They all lead to the same understanding. In fact, good christians, those that actually follow the teachings of Christ, not the "Word of Christ", are also good buddhists. The basic tenents of the two religions are the same, just completely different implementations.
That theory relies on the premise that the defining factor of a god is faith. Therefore if god were to prove its existance faith would no longer have to exist, just fact. Doesn't matter to me anyway, buddhism (my religion/philosophy - your choice) does not endorse the existance of a god or gods. On another note, I don't see how a creator who is not a sadist could rightfully punish a creature given free will for all eternity due to their mistakes incurred in less than 100 years of existance. It just makes sense to me that our consciousness would be "recycled" like everything else in nature.
The people that wrote that letter should not be holding the positions they hold today. This demonstration of ignorance should be a criminal offence for an Attorney General. If they are this *STUPID* about basic issues like when something is "off" it no longer functions, what other areas are they lacking in? The fact that they wouldn't even do basic research or even a google search really frightens me.
Personally I think that TV is the root of much that is wrong with our culture today, and as a result of that I don't really watch TV. The only reason there is a TV set even in the house besides movies is that my roommate watches it a little bit. Despite this fact, in St. Mary's County Maryland we have been blessed with GMP Cable TV who has "Expanded Basic Service" as a prerequisite to internet access. You can get basic service without a cable modem, which is the local channel and some broadcast networks I can get with an antenna. In order to use a cable modem however I need to buy a $26.20/month service THAT I WILL NEVER USE. I get charged $40.95/month just to get the line to my house, and then the internet access fees on top of that. I hope I can turn off all the channels with this.
Interesting. So basicially we're just dumbing it down in the wrong sort of ways; we are using the wrong kind of metaphors. The only issue I see with correcting this is that if you change the metaphor now, the usability issues will increase by several orders of magnitude for the near future. Remember, people hate change with a passion, even if it is for the better. Any sort of system that changes the metaphor in a useful, complete, and consistant way will be actively rejected and fought. Rock. Hard place.
No. I've given it a little more thought though. I think they are more impatient and unwilling to learn than unable. I've met people that can strip a car engine to the block in under half an hour, but claim to not understand the concept of right-click vs left-click. The level of dumbness that would have to be achieved would make the technology near useless.
If it took 30 years to replace cobal/IBM 370 code then it will take 30 years to get the com/.net/Windows back out again. I predict Windows to be used for 30 or 40 years thanks to the proprietariness of the whole environment.
That stuff was around for that long because it was installed on very large and very expensive mainframes and the like. I don't see much of the current hardware still being functional 15 years from now, nevermind 40. The hardware will change too fast to keep the old systems running, and it's not like they're going to port it over for you. You get to buy the New and Improved version!
I really don't understand people in general and how grossly incompetent they are with anything more complex than a toaster or a microwave. I can understand if they've never even seen a computer before, but jesus christ, if you've been using one for more than a week you should have more than a small grasp on how to open and save files. Or how about keeping track of where they save it to so I don't have to take the three clicks (in windows) to get them to the find dialog to have them tell me they don't know what it was called. If they are really that dumb whe it comes to technology they need to get another job.
Please define "the good of the people."

Links would speak for themselves.
640k is enough for anybody!
We've heard this kind of crap before.

Bush by the numbers

Actually, Leave it to Beaver reached Pluto roughly 4.1 hours after it was broadcast.
State is a function of temperature. For example: dry ice is solid CO2. Liquid O2 is used in rockets

Well if you need any of a wide array of processors: Opencore.org!
