  1. Hmmm.... anyone else tried it? on Everquest Server Emulator In Beta · · Score: 3

All of the previous posts that I have read dealt with moral ramifications, possible action on Sony and Verant's part, and the quality of EQ's graphics.

I play EQ regularly and can safely say that while I don't enjoy paying around $10 a month, plus $40 for the game alone, It's something that I've come to terms with; they don't call it EverCrack for nothing. It would be nice sometimes, to try something a little different, ie, different NPC's, different item's, and locations.

Curious, as most /.er's usually are by nature, I decided to try out the Hacker's Quest server. Hacker's quest has already gained notoriety for an app that they created called ShowEQ, which sniffs the packets and logs them allowing you to find out specifics of the game that Verant doesn't want you to know. It's pretty nifty, although it does kind of cheapen the experience, IMHO.

Once, I logged on to the Hackersquest server (affectionatly titled) Nine Inch Gnomes ^_^, I made up a new character, as one would expect to do when joining a new server. Once I actually got into the game, I noticed that everyone else started as the same race and level, in the same area.... it's a beta ok... I can cope.

I looked around some more to find that there were no NPC's, enemies, spells, or anything vaguly resembling gameplay.... underwhelming again. What did redeem this server is that they added some extra commands, that allow you to take the form of any NPC in the game; to spawn any item in the game. This was pretty nifty, I could take the form of giant hands or spectres, or try out the most expensive equipment in the game.

Verdict: Hacker's Quest has a long way to go... without any gameplay, well it is boring as Bill Gates' wardrobe color scheme. It does have a little novelty value, but a game without anything to do is not worth noticing.

Sidenote: Sony/Verant will take legal action, it's just their style. ^_^

  2. Don't forget the undistributed stuff yet. Fansubs! on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

I've been watching anime for the past couple of years and am not really suprised at the comments that people have posted.

    Akira.
    Lain.
    Neon Genesis Evangelion.
    Ruroni Kenshin.
    etc.

All of the above are good series, but many titles which aren't under liscence in the US are great, also. Here, we are forced to stomache the likes of DBZ, the edited Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Digimon which are all subbed and all dubbed.
Rob, here's my advice: look for some anime circle (club) around Holland, and retrieve some good undistributed titles, copied. The best part is that these copies aren't illegal because they don't fall under US copyright law because they aren't available here under normal channels. As for titles here are some greats series which are really worth finding:

    Kareshi Kanojo No Jijou:
Also called "Kare Kano" Translated as "His and her circumstances."
My favorite series! It's a shoujo anime about a boy and a girl in high school who have been overachievers all of their lives and through their romance find out how empty their lives are. Hillarious with great art.

    Lost Universe
A SF series, it's a great comedy about 3 Trouble Contractors (read: bounty hunters) and their various hijinx trying to find a lost ship which has unforseen powers.

    Please, no more DBZ dialogue!

  3. Is it a bad sign, when......... on I Want Names for my Servers! · · Score: 1

  4. Team_Fortress && Valve != Clans; on Ask John Carmack About Quake - or Anything Else · · Score: 1

Did anyone else notice that they mentioned Team Fortress in the same breath as a clan; as if it was a clan? For those who are unfamiliar: Team Fortress is a game, or rather a modification of a game. A clan is a group of players ie team. In them in the same light, like Team Fortress is a team that was sold to Valve.

This does seem a bit petty, I just wanted to make sure there was not mistake.

    Thanks.

  5. Mantis??? on MTV Profiles "Hackers" · · Score: 1

If it is true that Mantis from Hack/Phreak Parse is going to be MTV's mystery hacker, he'll represent geeks fairly well, I think. I used to watch Parse(a realvideo show which airs weekly) and got some help from Mantis a few times. He helped me werk with some C bugs I had and a problems with FreeBSD. I think he was a good choice for the special because:

1: Most importantly, he knows what he is talking about. Mantis is pretty up to date on security issues, *nix, and computers in general. He's not just some l33t h4x0r who just d/l'd BO.

2: He is relatively hip. I know this doesn't hold much bearing with _us_, but it will prolly cause people to pay attenion. You could put Larry Wall on MTV talking about CGI exploits and no one would watch ('cept me, go Perl!!! ^_^). Maybe he'll use this as a platform to explain the difference between Hackers and Crackers.

....and I'll bet Linux will never be mentioned...

  6. I am having the same problem... on High Intensity Computer Colleges? · · Score: 1

I am a senior in high school & am having the same problem. As it is now time to send in SAT & ACT scores, not to mention grades, I am having trouble find the school which best suits me. College aid and early admission stuff has to be sent in the next month or so....Enter frustration.
My main interests are AI and Physics, so it's not gonna be easy to pick a school that is good in these fields and will accept my grades. [cough]loot[cough] also is playing a big part. I am in NC, so one of the most obvious choices is NC State for undergrad. My SAT's are ok, so I'll bet I can get in there. Then there are the dream schools, the pricey ones that I would love to go to, but prolly can't get in: CMU and MIT. What self respecting geek wouldn't want to go to either one?

CMU: I'm sure plenty of /.er's will advocate Carnigie Mellon. It's a great IT and CS school, especially for AI. Cons: $$$ and my grades suck.

MIT: Every geeks dream. Cons: see above. Something like 27% of applicants are accepted, and most know they have a good shot.

Not to infringe on this guys concern, any advice that can be give to my specific case would help,
    too.

To the original post: Good luck tough guy, you'll need it. Maybe you don't need to go to college on the other hand . Many IT jobs can be picked up by book (Netwerking, Coding, etc.) You can be assured in a good tech school you'll learn it right.

Oh, and yeah, this is prolly a redundant or offtopic post by now. ^_^

  7. Extremely well written. on Notes Toward a Postcyberpunk Manifesto · · Score: 1

Lawrence Person is right on the dot with this. (no pun in tended.) This third wave of SF is very integrated with all facets of society, which has been always been quite rare. He brings up many valid points that have Cyberpunk readers agreeing with many sentances. Neil Stephenson and Bruce Sterling, as mentioned, capture the essence of what Person is saying; Each of their recent respective works, namely in my mind The Diamond Age, has echoed thoroughness in capturing social life, with everything taken into account. Also, I had a good laugh at the "Show, don't explain," comment, which held true for earlier Cyberpunk works.

Though I may not be an expert on the subject I have always thought of the Zilrog z80's as the small underated 8 bit chip that was running everything behind the scenes. Quite a few of the posts have stated that the z80 is embedded in many things, but there is one thing I don't think that I could live without: Tetris!! After hacking around with my knowledge of Assembly and the z80 architecture I found that my Gameboy uses modified instruction set. Hehe....neat....now to get the GBSDK....
