  1. Brazilian football team names on Corinthians.com Taken Away, Given To Soccer Team · · Score: 1
    Bummer, I was just thinking of starting to support the Corinthians team. Looks like I'll have to stay with Flamengo now!

    It's interesting to check out the URLs of some other Brazilian teams:

    www.flamengo.com, although in Portuguese, says it isn't related to the Flamengo team. And they don't seem to have been sued off the net yet.

    www.palmeiras.com is simply a link to the www.palmeiras.com.br site.

    www.saopaulo.com seems to have nothing to do with the São Paulo team - gee, a chance for another good lawsuit!

    www.fluminense.com seems to be taken by the same dudes who took saopaulo.com. Wow, two lawsuits for the price of one!

    www.guarani.com shows that there really IS some domain squatting going on with these Brazilian football team names - and no it's not the American Christians who are responsible!

    www.botafogo.com is another "unofficial" page - room for another good lawsuit there!

    Thunderbear Software Creations, with their www.atletico.com site have a message saying that this URL is not for sale. Still, I think they're gonna need a real good lawyer to keep their URL...

    Vasco Data Security (www.vasco.com) should hire a good lawyer, 'coz the Rio based Vasco football could take their URL off them Real Soon Now.

    IMHO these Brazilian teams should stick to their .BR domain and not try to take out the top level domain names.

  2. A suggestion for all Slashdoters on Censorship != Innovation · · Score: 1
    I'd like to suggest another way in that we can all help Slashdot in this "battle".

    From what I can see, media coverage of this issue is an important defence for Slashdot, and could help influence politicians and others ultimately involved in the case. I noticed the NY Times article wrote about the 1000 comments for the first story, obviously this was something that caught their attention.

    What I believe we need is some sort of "guest book" or online petition where all of Slashdot's supporters can identify themselves, to "stand up and be counted". The summaries of this database, broken down by geographical area (including country), could then be released to the general media. I think the results would really surprise the people who aren't aware of just how popular Slashdot really is!

    Obviously, this would need to be a serious effort. We would need to collect enough identifying information about each person to be able effectively analyse the contributions, and to establish the credibility of each person who signs. Without, of course, permitting the possibility of the database falling into the hands of spammers or other undesirables.

    The site that this log is hosted on would have to able to withstand a lot of traffic. The software would have to be put in place quickly, and someone would need to be responsible for summarising the entries and releasing them to the mainstream media.

    Who can help us with this?

    And, while I'm posting, congratulations Slashdot for your important contribution to the freedom of speech.
