yes anonymous moron, if you employ software developers to write software, you are in the business of developing software. you are paying money to have someone write software for you.
are you able to differentiate that, from someone who purchases software and uses it?
I wonder how much cheaper it is for the city to send money to Redmond for licenses than it is to hire a German to fix the file format problem.
i suspect the city doesn't want to be in the business of software development.
that, and it's an unbounded problem. they could hire someone and still not have an adequate solution a year later. or they could hire 5 people. who knows? common sense says that if it was an easy problem to solve, the OO developers would have fixed it straight away since interoperability is the single biggest complaint about FOSS office software.
Google does not need the revenue generated by my adviews
i like your thinking. you know what? apple doesn't "need" the revenue from my ipad purchase either. have you seen their profits? that's why i stole 30 of them from the back of a truck the other day.
I thought the Fire was basically a forked version of Android. So this would seem to say, if you want to publish with Google you could not also publish for Amazon.
no. kindle is 100% android so it runs all android apps (theoretically).
this just says that android devices must come with the android SDK- amazon can't take the android SDK and modify it into something else such that apps written to the kindle SDK won't run on other pure android devices.
note that it doesn't prevent amazon from create a kindle SDK that sits on top of the android SDK.
think back to the old MSFT - Sun lawsuit where MSFT took the Java SDK and created J++.
I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best phones I ever had
that's an amazing feat no doubt. so why are you begging them to change it? seriously, you sound like the type of person that values function over fashion. get over the fact that your version is two numbers lower than newer phones, and be happy with your "best phone ever".
do you know what that words means? google doesn't hide the fact that they gather information. it's well known. heck, even you know it.
You give one company that power, for what?
for the massive number of free services they offer? ever heard of google search? when's the last time you dug into your wallet to pay for that service? do you understand how much infrastructure and development resources go into google search? they offer you a product for allowing them to track you. that product is search, email, calendar, google apps on android, and so on. if you don't want to pay the price, don't consume the product. it's quite simple.
maybe you think that companies should just make and give you free stuff for nothing. that's not how the world works.
and one last thought, if you think microsoft, apple, at&t and so on are not sending personal data back to their servers every time you use one of their products, i have a nice bridge to tell you, cheap. all companies that can track you do track you.
except android can be locked down however you want for use in an appliance, like a camera. basing it off of android just gets you access to thousands of free camera, photo manipulation, and photo + video sync applications that are available on android. the vendor can pick and choose what they bundle, or just provide access to google play store to let the user decide.
Secondly, when one looks at the amounts of malware available for each platform it does become clear that the 'walled garden' does seem to have an affect on device security.
okay, so you are now admitting that there is malware on iOS? that's a big step. so, from now on, your argument is going to be that there's less malware on iOS?
They should have been evolving along with it. And what's intel doing? They remain quite relevant... not so much on the mobile end I guess... their Atom processor ain't quite it you know?
ever heard of medfield? it's already shipping in phones, and by most accounts meets or beats performance and efficiency of ARM chips.
on the other hand, heard anything about ARM's desktop / laptop / server chips? even a prototype?
Engineers profoundly hate to be sold along, as if they were pieces of equipment, with the company they work for.
i really doubt anyone cares about "being sold". companies get bought. these things happen. what matters is if they like the new position / compensation.
Admittedly support for keyboards and mice is quite poor in Android
data please? i've had nothing but success with everything i've tried, both bluetooth and USB. and unlike iOS, you get a real honest to goodness mouse cursor on android.
If they can significantly hurt iPhone market share, they will be in a very strong position to basically define the smartphone market.
except they won't do that, not this way. samsung is a gigantic corporation with lots of divisions that makes money in all sorts of ways. they position themselves to make money no matter what happens. there's simply no way they would cripple their own fab division to boost their consumer cell phone sales division.
apple is samsung's second largest customer (sony is #1). samsung will happily sell them components until the end of time. they'll happily compete with them in the consumer electronics space as well.
I knind of stupid considering they can take their CPU design to anyone else which I'm sure they've already been in the process of doing.
very few, if any, other manufacturers can produce the chip in capacity and at the cost. in fact, given that apple didn't walk away at a 20% increase, it's likely samsung is significantly beating apple's next best option.
ah, so you think it makes sense to let individuals decide which laws to follow and which to break? maybe you'll tell me that only smart people like you should get to decide?
what you wrote is a rationalization to break any law you want whenever you want.
So is the PC just an inefficient heater, then? Even my aluminum case is cold to the touch. If I didn't have so many fans (10 in total), would it make the room hotter?
no, if it had fewer fans, it's make the room *less* hot. fans use electricity and their motors generate heat increasing the overall heat output of your computer. you have a fan to keep your CPU (mainly) cool, not to decrease the overall heat output of your computer.
So there you have it. IMHO, geeks create fictions by transmogrifying anecdotal data into quantitative data...why? Simple, quantitative data has less uncertainty, and therefore is easier for a 'geek-minded' person to sythesize
put that dictionary away. it's doing more harm than good.
if you compare performance / watt, they are about even. the only thing to be said is that intel owns the high end, and ARM owns the low end. intel hasn't (yet) produced a low perf / low wattage chip to rival ARM, and ARM hasn't produced a high perf chip to rival intel.
let me know when ARM can make a processor that can power a modern laptop or desktop and beat the power consumption of intel. they aren't anywhere close.
Run those same tests/malware against Linux/Mac. 0% gets through.
really? do you think that malware written to take advantage of exploits in the windows OS won't work on linux? thanks for that revelation. linux wins again.
you had me until this. sure municipalities use traffic tickets to boost income, but traffic laws are there for a reason and for the most part aren't bullshit and keep people safe (speed limit, come to full stop at stop sign, use your signal,...). municipalities are preying on your inability to follow simple rules. here's the secret to beating them: follow the rules.

though a solid chunk of what you see in Android is written in Java, and all apps are written in it.
not true. android apps can be written in 100% C/C++ code, and many apps call into C libraries.
If you aren't the customer, you're the product.
ooooh intense.
yes, everyone knows that. we understand how the advertising world works. we're okay with it.
Yep, almost any company you come across aggregates your data, Google isn't alone in this. They are just the best.
good, and i hope you don't use any of those products or visit and ad-supported websites. or maybe you just like talking the talk?

rationalizing is fun.
dude, create a dummy google account and stop complaining.

and, this article and the new terms of the agreement have nothing to do with that problem.
what makes google so nefarious
do you know what that words means? google doesn't hide the fact that they gather information. it's well known. heck, even you know it.

How many purchases per phone are made on Android vs iOS?
i can tell you with some degree of certainty that if a developer doesn't have an android offering, they will have fewer purchases on android.
Secondly, when one looks at the amounts of malware available for each platform it does become clear that the 'walled garden' does seem to have an affect on device security.

It's well-known that Apple's new A6 leaves other ARM-based chips in the dust.
sorry. the exynos 5 (samsung's A15) wipes the floor with the apple A6.
