"ePub". The last time I checked, that is at least one open format in use by an Apple media device.
agreed.
And I am pretty sure the MP4 is another.
saying something is MP4 doesn't mean anything. any particular MP4 encoded stream can have variable bit and stream rates.
have you ever tried to get a movie file that you obtained from another source onto an ipod or iphone. it will only play the file if it's just how apple wants it. there are programs to convert. my macbook pro took 6-8 hours to convert a movie. very user friendly.
I think that HTML might be considered yet another.
really? i guess my car is standards based also because it drives on roads.
So you don't like the closed OS. Fair enough. So why not jailbreak and install whatever you want?
because it voids the warranty? most people don't feel very good about unwrapping their brand new $600 goodie then immediately doing something to it that will prevent them from getting it repaired if something breaks.
not to mention the vast majority of people are just not technically comfortable with the process. that's the type of people that apple targets.
How did USB for input devices work out for you? If the iMac hadn't adopted usb as the primary connection for peripherals we'd still be stuck with the PC's multitude of incompatible interfaces.
reference please. the only thing i could find was a quote from wikipedia stating that the imac was the first apple computer to have usb.
In fact, I would compare the iPad to the upcoming yet-to-be-made Chromium netbook. The vision Google laid out for their device is pretty much exactly the same as Apple's vision of the iPad.
the more apt comparison is with the multitude of android-based tablets that will be released around the same time as the ipad. comparing the ipad OS to android is night and day. android is an open operating system. there's a nice app store from google with just about everything you want, but there's also 3rd party app stores, and of course you can download any app you want from any source and install it directly. android is open source. android is true multitasking.
Except that Apple is actually _less_ connected in to your device than Google would be.
i don't know. the fact that i have to use itunes to get any content onto my apple portable device seems to make it pretty much connected to apple.
it's a common mistake to say android == google. the prominent android-based phones ship google apps, but that's only because those companies have a licensing agreement with google. there are many android devices (archos) that haven no connection to google whatsoever. they are pure google-less android devices.
if we've learned anything from the iPhone and iPod it's that Apple has tremendous influence in driving the standards of consumer electronics
have they driven standards? they produce a bunch of proprietary devices that lock you into using another one of apple's proprietary devices whenever they can. itunes is a completely closed ecosystem. the app store is locked down. their media devices don't use open formats.
there has been no announcement about cutting staff, internal or external. "analysts" have speculated that oracle make deep cuts (up to 50%), but oracle has flatly denied that.
The market for the Air is executives and frequent travelers who need something small to take notes on, edit spreadsheets, power projectors, and kill plane time, all while looking cool.
i'd disagree, for the reason that you simply cannot do anything more than the simplest data entry with a touch screen.
1. it's a very small keyboard 2. you don't have physical button edges which means you *must* look at every key you press 3. the on-screen keyboard severely hides the display when it's up 4. you are either standing with the device typing with one hand and holding it with the other, or sitting down with it on your lap with the entire device flat, keyboard and display which puts the display at an awkward angle making it hard to see (along with the keyboard, which is on the display as well).
people are already unimpressed w/ the ipad's purported battery life. battery life is king when it comes to portable devices. as unfortunate as it is, the ARM processor was probably a good tradeoff.
they are pretty different markets. the air is a fully-featured laptop (with a keyboard) running OSX. the iPad has no keyboard and is much less powerful and runs "iphone OS.next" or whatever they are calling it.
an apple laptop is about 2x the price* of a PC laptop for about the same hardware. and continuing with that trend, they have now released a netbook that is about 2x the price of a PC netbook.
* a strict price comparison is not possible. apple tends to have better form factors. in laptops (at 2x the price), they have a slightly better processor, and usually a smaller hard drive. the iPad (at 2x the price) obviously has a better form factor and a touch screen, but a netbook has a more powerful processor and bigger disk.
it must be very hard for the news industry owners to let go of all that profit... but make no mistake, it's gone. whatever they charge, there is always going to be some other source that delivers it for free. the technology to deliver voice, images, and full motion hi-res video instantly, from around the world, is cheap. and, lets face it people that can write an intelligible article or speak eloquently are a dime a dozen.
It is very likely that this tablet will just be a big ole iPhone. I think everyone who has used their smart phone on their couch has gone "God I wish the screen was just a few more inches".
note really. the reason why a touchscreens works so well on a phone form factor is that you can reach the extent of the screen by simply moving your fingers around. if the screen is much bigger than that, you have to move your entire arm, which is an exhausting (and eventually crippling) exercise.
you are judged by the company you keep. you married her, and guess what? people are going to be lumped in with her bad behavior. as 1920's as this sounds, control you woman. or don't and have her bad behavior attributed to you as well. your choice.
the goal here is to avoid being distracted when you are driving.
finding your phone, looking at it enough so you can find the "answer" button, maybe needing to unlock the phone first or flip it open, then holding the phone close enough where there person can hear you say "hold on" is not a solution.
and don't give me a bunch of hoopla about how advanced your phone is hands free and you can answer it simply by thinking about it. not everyone has that feature. the vast majority of phones requires you to press a button to answer.
iphone 4 is rumored next week as well. if you bought a 3gs last week it would make you sort of upset if the iphone 4 came out this week. at&t may have just pulled the 3gs for that reason.
why would you think they'd lower the unlocked price? $500-$700 is pretty standard for unlocked smart phones. apple isn't known for discounted prices, and considering the demand for the iphone, i'd expect the price to stay on the high-side of that range if we are lucky.
Google is doing its best with their TV ads to counter that
i've never seen a google TV ad. i've seen ads for the droid and mytouch, but i don't think they even mention google. all of the nexus one hype came from tech publications.
it doesn't (shouldn't) matter. OSS is about giving and receiving. for contributing resources to open source, a company gets word of mouth press, free beta testers, input on features, and maybe even someone that doesn't work for them contributing code to their product.
the AOSP (android open source project) doesn't depend on google services. google services are added to phones whose manufacturers license them through google.
there are already many android devices that do not license from google. the b&n nook is one example.
Beside proper sentence capitalization
ohhh ouch!

firewire?
what did i miss?
$15/mo for 250 MB
that's about 3x smaller than the smallest movie file i've ever seen. interesting. i guess AT&T is being more realistic about it's capabilities.
there has been no announcement about cutting staff, internal or external. "analysts" have speculated that oracle make deep cuts (up to 50%), but oracle has flatly denied that.
hello editor?

Fine, the Apple tablet doesn't appeal to you, why even bother making a comment?
let me understand this. this discussion is reserved for people that have positive things to say about apple / the apple tablet rumor?
It is very likely that this tablet will just be a big ole iPhone. I think everyone who has used their smart phone on their couch has gone "God I wish the screen was just a few more inches".

maybe he's responding to what TFA is saying about it, as is every other post here. here it is again, for your reference.
A McGraw Hill CEO confirmed the tablet on CNBC last night, basically saying it is a big iPhone that has content agreements with publishers.
"They don't want to host their data on some third-party servers,"
yes, the average person *loves* to manage their own backups.
i have an android phone. my pictures, music, calendar, mail, videos, and contacts are all in the cloud. it all works quite well for me.
it's not as simple as connected or not. intelligent client apps cache data locally and sync it when there's a connection.
you are judged by the company you keep. you married her, and guess what? people are going to be lumped in with her bad behavior. as 1920's as this sounds, control you woman. or don't and have her bad behavior attributed to you as well. your choice.
headsets at least free up your arms to control the vehicle. that's something.
According to studies, talking on a cellphone is far more distracting than talking on a car.
if i was talking on a car, i'd be paying really close attention not to fall off. i can see what you mean.
the goal here is to avoid being distracted when you are driving.

the OP had it right. just don't answer it.
