They will simply make their money through advertisement, using the same business model as the tv networks.

I'm confused how apple could be at its peak before the mac arrived? I took a quick peak at arstechnica.com but didn't find anything that old in the search results.

But I did see one saying that they predict apple to be a 20 billion dollar company in 2007 and that would seem to support that since jobs came back share has increased. Maybe it didn't increase immediately but I would think if you compared it to when he was away to when we was there it would be bigger. Thats not necessarily saying he is directly responsible for it, but I suppose the data does suggest it.

I obviously don't know the percentage of mac sales versus say ibm pc's but I remember the mac being a big player at the bigging in terms of market share and it was only by influx of ibm clones that began to drive down its market share to the niche market.

  4. Repeat of the PC itself on SanDisk Baits Apple And Woos Rockbox · · Score: 1

Seems to me I remember the macintosh being superior at one point too, and "cool" people were buying them left and right, then the open market alternative namely PC's built on the x86 archecticture began having success, both windows and linux, and Apple lost its major share of the market.
This ain't meant to be flaimbait but just an observation of history repeating itself.

The real trick to any great ransom is not the actual kidnapping of the hostage its how to do the exchange without getting caught. Does anyone know what mechanism he planned to use in order to not get caught?
I'll feel stupid if the answer has already added to the discussion but truthfully as I began reading most of the discussion was on the actual password.

The man said nothing about microsoft, but I guess if you dare to critizie apple on slashdot then you get an automatic zero score.
You should compare Apple to the PC not Apple to Microsoft when you talking about freedom of choices for platforms.

I bet IBM is just foaming at the mouth ready with its fork just ready to scoop up the source code and create some stiff competition of who has best version of java. Look at SWT and eclipse and you'll see just how much they have accomplished without the source code.

If they were to license it under the GPL that would kill it because all the commerical applications that rely on it would then have to go GPL as well. They would have to use something more like the LGPL or the apache license model so that commerical appication can leverage off it and still have their own licensing.

  9. If apple ruled the world.... on Apple's Device Model Beats the PC Way · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Its true the the apple of today makes every attempt to be able to allow you to use other formats on its closed system, but that is because they are the minority and forced by market pressures to do so. If they were the 800-pound gorilla instead of microsoft they would be 100 times more controlling and dominating then microsoft, as that is their business model. They would best friend as long as you did things on their terms...basically as long as you were assimilated you'd have no problem.
You might even think things would be better under their toltarian rule...they promise performance, quality, and interoperablility. But the apple of today would not be the same apple unless it was forced too. So for all you happy go lucky apple users, be careful about raving about apple too much because the more converts you make the less apple will do for you, because if apple ruled the world they wouldn't have to make you happy to keep you, they would keep you by giving you no other choice.
