  1. Re:What in the heck? on Where Is My Heavy-Duty Mouse? · · Score: 1

I've got to agree, what on earth are you doing with your mice?

Where I work (a new car dealership) we recently replaced most of the mice in the parts department with optical mice because the old mice were beginning to wear out. These cheap crappy mice had been working fine in our dusty parts department for almost three years, in which time most the CD drives have died.

I agree. From a UI perspective you'd want the same thing to happen whichever mouse/pointer was used.

So if you clicked button1 on mouse1 the event would be something like: mouse.button1.buttondown
And if you clicked button1 on mouse2 it would be: mouse.button1.buttondown

This way it wouldn't matter if you used the wrong mouse.

This happens often enough as it in the comments area, with people bullshitting and whining about stuff without actually reading the articles.

Hmmm. Why is Sega getting cranky at the DVD companies copyright violations but not the ROM sites?

Could it be that Dulux DVD is a big enough company to bother suing, but the ROM site owners are pissants who don't have enough cash to make it worth the cost of the lawyers. If Sega were to go after the ROM sites it would be seen as them bullying the underdog little guys.

Microsoft and the BSA don't go after home users copying software for their friends, but if the local computer store is selling computers loaded with unlicensed software they cop a serious spanking. It's the difference between amateurs and professionals.

", sony currently has their minidisk which was obsolete at introduction time. "

This part isn't exactly true IMHO as the MD was released in the early 90's long before things like the Zip disk came along. However it was probably obsolete by the time it became "popular".
If Sony had pushed it harder we might have managed to get rid of the Floppy and had 100MB disks long before now.

Sorry I didn't mean that AutoCAD's price would drop.
Lets say I need a CAD package, I cant afford AutoCAD and I can't pirate it, therefore I will have to buy a cheaper package instead of AutoCAD. If I bought the smaller cheaper HypotheticalCAD package then HypotheticalSoft would have a better chance at funding further development so that one day they could eventually catch up to AutoCAD.
If AutoCAD had to worry about this cheaper competitor catching up to them in features, etc. then AutoCAD would have to either reduce their price or improve their own product to justify their high price.

This is a variation on the argument that Piracy doesn't hurt the dominant product ie AutoCAD, MS-Office, etc. because pirate users will learn how to use AutoCAD, then request it when they get a job using CAD software. Piracy also help the dominant package by keeping down their competitors.

  10. Re:All This Whining about Piracy! on Pete Townshend On Lifehouse, The Net, And Pirating · · Score: 1

But if AutoCAD had managed to stop most of that piracy, people would have had to buy cheaper affordable packages. This would have led to a more competitive CAD market as the smaller/cheaper packages would have had a chance to grow, which would let these smaller companies fund more development of their CAD package.

It's a reference to South Park. In the "Chef Aid" episode, Chef is suing Alanis Morisette over song copyrights or something. One of the sides has Johnny Cochrane(?) arguing the "infamous" Chewbacca defense, which is basically confusing the jury with inconsistencies from Star Wars.

In which case it is a valid argument, JK is being a hypocrit.

As much as I like to use Napster to download music, I do realise it is wrong to download copyrighted material against the owners wishes. The beauty of Napster is in being able to try out new (to me) music, for example one day I came across a reference to the Grateful Dead on CowboyNeal's website and I realised I'd no idea what this famous band were like. So I jumped onto Napster downloaded a couple of songs, and was able to try out a band I would never have heard otherwise.
Also, my interest in artists like Pearl Jam has grown significantly since I found out they allow non-commercial distribution of live recordings.

What you need to consider though is who is going to attack you and why?
    - If its a foreign country that wants to send a lot of big missiles intent on causing a lot of strategic damage, they could probably also create their own navigation system. The Soviets have a nav system called GLONASS, which I've heard is actually better than the US's GPS system.

    - If its a terrorist group, they don't need acurate missiles. In Oklahoma they simply parked a vehicle outside the building they were targetting.

While this doesn't sound like a problem to you now, wait until you want to use some sort of wireless networking or other sensitive radio equipment. Having to cope with EM interference will either reduce your data bandwidth significantly or make the equipment more expensive because it has to filter out the extra crap.
