"We are ready to restart negotiations with the Commission. We have always said people have issues that need to be addressed through face-to-face negotiations to tease out the technological nuances. We remain committed to that," Smith said.
Notice it was just a Microsoft guy saying that the comission said that and not the actual comission.
I want the name of the comission person who said that. This is pure fud for the uninformed.
they still have to get their jabs in even though they have their tails between their legs.
why can't they just comply and shut up and quit saying who said what and just stick to the case.
I am so sick of their fud machine
Sun would be in a better position if they were just honest.
Their hardware has really been sucking - memory problems, system board problems, we have systems that are brand new and the system boards need replacement. go figure
I have a sun blade 100 at my desk that has solaris 8 and their piece of shit gnome desktop. Tried to put linux on there but since I upgraded to their newest firmware on the eeprom it will only boot off of the cdrom solaris 8 cd's - what a crock of shit - it is basically a pc why can't it boot off a fricken cdrom that isn't solaris.
glad I upgraded the eeprom.
just shit like that is what makes me hate sun -
they think they are these engineering marvels when all we want is the stuff to work.
this is why linux on amd64 and xeons are replacing them in the data center - it is cheaper and just works. plain and simple - I get less calls about hardware at night -
okay I am done - I just hope openoffice doesn't get hosed somehow with the "partnership" with Microsoft. Why was it mentioned in that agreement anyway - has anybody from sun mentioned that like their CEO McNealy who is best buddies with Steve Ballmer and not just so PR drone. They sure are keeping quite about that subject.
Okay - I am responding to my own post - but I just had an idea as a settlement with MPAA -
they should make sure the every movie that comes out on dvd is readable on linux before windows.
I am really serious they should do this and then we would have a competitive market advantage on windows.
How do you like those terms - I feel like I am working in marketing.
This could be the best thing to happen to Linux.
I hope they sue their asses off - what about the little guy that gets these by mistake and doesn't have any lawyers on hand.
This crap MPAA is doing is so unconstitutional it isn't funny. They should all be put in jail.
I hope sue their asses off and pay any burden that this has caused and then put it in headlines all around the globe.
This just goes to show how flawed their searches are and that they have no clue on what the hell they are doing.
If anybody develops for OpenOffice or any other office suite I would not even get in the same room as the code.
If you look at the code and develop for OpenOffice then Microsoft will probably come after you saying you stolen their code because you read it and it gave you the ideas and means to do the programming.
Be very, very, very careful - why would a proprietary company want people to see it's secrets that has been its cash cow for the past 4 or five years. I think they are gearing up for an attack on open office - now that we have seen part of the agreement between sun and them - why would open office even have to be mentioned in the agreement - it has nothing to do with them.
I smell something rotten in denmark.
First the assault on linux is legal by trying to outlaw it by patents, drm, you name it they will try it. But it doesn't really look like it is coming from them it is coming from their "business partners".
now they are going to try to basically make linux a non factor with new standards that they will try to force down our throats.
they have no business in the hardware business - why don't try to write a good os first -
maybe bush and DOJ will see this and stop these monopolistic tactics - oh wait - nevermind
find./ -name s* -print -exec/bin/grep -R dns {} \;
of course it only searches for files that start with s in the current directory but you can substitute anything you want with a variable and start at root if you want. and it is just looking for the string dns but you can also substitute a variable.
now I am going to fill out the patent application and sue you all. muaaaaaaaaagh!
along with playing your drm movies - you can view the lates powerpoint presentation from Bill and Steve.
And it can also do word processing just like your laptop Uh! Uh! wait Uh! nevermind.
yes - I am replying to my own post - I have just read some of the emails threads from the guy on the kernel list and I think he is being a bit of a zealot and I say so long - linux does not need individuals who think they are bigger than the whole.
why can't the kernel maintainers do something similiar to what the distros did with X11.
just cut your losses now and keep what you have in the kernel and try to get support for the compression some other way. you can keep what you have in the kernel like as of today's date or something and just take his name out of source or like above just put the explanation in the source.
he is just being an ass about it wanting everything out of the kernel that is currently there under the gpl.
I wouldn't feel like this is stealing - I don't agree with the emails who said that - it is just a disagreement for future development.
This is one individual trying to force his way on the kernel - that is just not right - even Linus doesn't do that -
this happened -
in todays wonderful world of lawsuits and patents I don't think I want the kernel to load a module that was provided by a person who signed an nda.
thanks kernel developers.
second my logitech webcam pro 4000 works just fine. I always had problems getting the pwcx to work and when I did I didn't notice a big difference - but that just may be me.
I hope they don't remove the pwc module because of this person's request.
It's GPL - so they don't have to - can't they put in this guys rant from the website in the source code and say the maintainer is now someone else. that would explain to everyone what is going on with support for the module and would clear his name like he is worried about.
I think this will be good for the kernel overall - the less proprietary crap and nda's the better.
and show some expert witnesses
IBM showed their mit witness that said there was no code - why don't they show theirs.
just shut up and show some god dam evidence - otherwise just go away.
why does this surprise anybody - I am sure glad I don't do windows anymore - I can get on with a lot more important things and my computers just work - don't have to defrag, virus update, or worse yet os update from microsoft. now if my dsl provider can just get more reliable life would be great.
my biggest complaint is the configuration of X.
xf86config should just be plain outlawed.
I am an experienced unix admin and love linux but the only real complaint I have with is the configuration of X. I can get it working with no problem with xf86config or x86setup -
but I really like what fedora has done - it is a non issue and you don't even have to mess with it at install time - this is the way it should be.
I have installed fedora on at least 20 to 30 computers and they all went without a hitch and I didn't have to have the monitor sync rates.
thanks fedora and keep up the good work!!
ashcroft is scary - he wants everyone to think and feel the way he does.
he couldn't even beat a dead guy to re-elected - that is why is where he is today.
can't wait till he retires and just gets out of politics.
you can't build a building in your basement now can you. there are other people involved in the process.
that is what so powerfull about software is that you can do it anytime and anywhere - it is free thought and should be free of patents and such.
you should be able to code what and when you want without worrying if you are going to get sued on patent infringements.
patents are stupid - it is a systme based on ignorance - for example if you try to look and see if someone has done something already and if the patent is so vague you don't think that is what your are coding/inventing - so you go ahead and invent anyway - well now if you get sued you damages can be a lot more because you saw the patent in the first place - your damages would be less if you didn't see it in the first place.
the software patent industry is flawed and should be stopped now!!
As far a Microsoft leaving the UN - this is nothing but the personality of Bill Gates - You don't see things my way so I am taking my toys and going home - I say good we do not need windows anymore - it is an old - bug filled - security nightmare of an os - and I wish it would just go away and let us run IT the way it is suppose to be run and stop filling our ceo with visions of sugar plums that never come true or come true in some nightmarish form.
stop telling/teaching developers to code ie only web pages - and while your at just dump ie - it is trash and really servers no purpose but a beehive for spyware, virueses, and trojans.
also - how about releasing the patent for the todo list - my wife hates paying everytime she makes a grocery list.
lol lol lol lol
but seriously - there needs to be some kind of external investigation with this one. something smells fishy.
I wouldn't even agree to a 10 year open source contract - 10 years is a very long time for software. if I was a citizen I would be seriously concerned. shoot - the could of put fedora on the desktop and have a new os twice a year - I know - they need to go longer than that to get their moneys worth - but when you can just yum an upgrade what is the tco on that?
"# For potential immediate savings, departments should take an inventory of software purchases and software renewals in the Fiscal Year 2004-2005 and implement open source alternatives where feasible."
yes - immediate savings
and finaly my tax dolloars being spent wisely.
thank you Arnold
how much more crippled can xp get - all that comes with is a browser and not even a good one at that.
you still have to buy all the productivity apps to even make the pc useful.
just install open source and forget about it - don't have to worry about licenses, viruses, children rendering the machine useless (relatively speaking), and updates are handled much more frequent and professionally - (i.e doesn't break anything).
windows is still a standalone by itself os - it has no business being networked.
This is what is the best part of Linux - it opens up the source and creates open standards.
It keeps people away from one company lock in.
I want to ge where I want to go not where some proprietary software company wants me to go.
Look at the xp2 packages - it is almost 300 meg - and the original cd that xp came on was 700 meg that is roughly 40% of the original program.
that is not a patch package that is a rewrite.
gee - that isn't going to cause any problems is it?
I upgraded my boxes using apt and yum one reboot and nothing broke - this is why I use open source.
it is just better and it works so I get on with my work!!
