Hey - meet my friend Chewbacca. He'll be pleased to meet you.

the people who DO get XP N will likely go to the MS site and download the media player as soon as they realize it's not there...
Exactly! Now they will be able to choose: Download winamp or real, whatever, OR MS Media player. See, that's the point of making XP N. So that users could be offered products made by the competition.
Has anyone noticed that the main reason why Microsoft became an internet monopoly (bundling software i.e. IE) is the main reason for its poor security record?
They're digging their own grave. (And yes, I say Microsoft should split between Microsoft-OS and Microsoft-Office)
I've made a "XP Install Disc 2" for myself, which has the full SP2 installer file, Firefox, Avast, Spybot, and Adaware on it, that I then install while the box is still offline...
which was reported to them eight years ago... but no... just a buffer overflow.
I imagine the microsoft engineers wearing anti-infection outfits (with masks and everything) and large instruments. --- "Ok there's the creature..." (imagine some sort of alien spider, but with more guts and everything) "Be careful guys, we don't want to break it, just remove the insecure splinter from it" "Man, this is disgusting. I wouldn't touch that with a 20 foot pole" "OK, splinter removed! Close the cage, quickly!"
TSHHHHHHHHHHHH
(Guys remove their masks) "Man, that was the scariest moment in my life! Why do we keep handling code like this?" "Shut up, the boss' coming right there!" (Bill Gates approaches) "Hey guys, what's up! Did you fix that vulnerability?" "Yes, sir!" (everybody puts up a blatant smile) 'I'm switching to Firefox', thinks one of them. ---
Finally there's good, old fashioned secrecy. Does Macy's tell Gimble's, as the old (now somewhat dated) adage goes. The idea here is that your competitors should have as difficult a time as inventing something as you did
For one, Ireally suspect they presume (or seem to), the implementation details can be deduced from the API's. Or at least that someone might reverse engineer their hardware, making one that's similar and compatible.
I honestly don't see the point of an online diary. A diary's something you write in a lock up, not post online for the world to see
Unless you're feeling so lonely that you can't take it anymore, and hope that at least SOMEONE in the world will read it and possibly become your only friend. Ever.
I happen to post at some forum website whith a blog section. You can read the latest posts in ALL blogs of the site. I've made a couple of friends by replying to their blogs:)

no typists learn Dvorak because too many others use QWERTY, which increases the value of QWERTY all the more.

This reminds me of a heredoc in PHP.
$something = HOOLAPALOOZA_WAS_HERE
(html stuff)
HOOLAPALOOZA_WAS_HERE;
When my boss saw it, he demanded me to change it to the usually boring EOD. Bummer.
could be in operation by 2015
I'm betting that by 2015 there'll be a technology to make even faster yets which will hold up to 1000 people.
Is it just me, or it really seems that large scale technological advances are going TOO slow?
Actually I have several dozen, in any shade that you choose
:)
Yes, but do they run Linux?
Apparently it's a zombie PC located at...
(let me jot down)
one two seven... dot zero... dot zero... dot one. There! Hit it guys.

Come on... stop treating 'the public' like complete morons.
When they stop downloading Britney Spears viruses, I'll believe you.

You'd like to check out the Mercalli Scale.
Is anyone really surprised that sex sells anymore?
Sex has been selling since 10,000 years ago. D'oh.
I've made a "XP Install Disc 2" for myself, which has the full SP2 installer file, Firefox, Avast, Spybot, and Adaware on it, that I then install while the box is still offline...
Does anyone have a better solution?
Are you kidding me? I install all SP2's from CD.

Why not just release a patch that uninstalls IE?
:(
Actually, the malware removal software from Microsoft did remove IE. But they "fixed" that "problem" a day later

Wasn't that what patents were for?
Just add a survey for people who switched from say, Office, to a competing product (i.e. OpenOffice), and substract that from the original figures.

I don't know.
OK OK it wasn't on /., but it was 3 months ago!

Changing the medium doesn't automatically make better content.
No, but it allows non-techy journalist-newbies to tell us what they want to tell.

Yeah, damn IE6 Microsoft monop... oh, wait.
Looks like someone got assimilated into the Collective. Hmmm... Where do I sign up? :P

Maybe he's just infecting the mothership. Who knows?
I emerged KDE and it took over 24 hours.
:P
Hey, maybe it was that slow to *emerge* as to safeguard the *decompression*!
He can still quit. Besides, he already gave his work to the world, didn't he? I say he deserves good compensation from it.
Well, you could put the heated water on the boiler - there! You save your self the heating, too! :)
