  1. Duh... on Gamers Aren't (Always) Geeks · · Score: 2, Interesting

Being a college student, and having spent two years in dorm life, I can tell you it's a rarity not to see a came console in most people's rooms, be they jock, geek, or otherwise. The most commonly played titles are sports games, mostly Madden 200X and NBA games. Bond and Mario Kart were the N64 games. Fighters are popular, but you only really saw various iterations of Mortal Kombat. I never really saw any of the female population playing console games, but quite a few enjoyed PC games like The Sims, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and simple puzzle games like Snood (which tookover everyone's life during exam week).

  2. For a little more in depth commentary... on Review: Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets · · Score: 1

I saw the movie premier night in a theater full of excited, costume adorned adults (and a few screaming kids I wanted to smack). Being a big fan of the books, I thought this time around that the movie adaptation of the book was inferior to the last movies adaptation. It seemed as though the whole first hour just sort of happened...all the events felt very unconnected to one another, and there could have been a much better flow between events. Also, unlike the first one, they changed the dialogue unneccessarily when the book's dialogue would have acctually been better (and stayed within time contraints). Moreover, I think it was poorly edited and could be vastly improved with a directors cut edition.

Either way, it would seem that they are very uncomfortable with the idea of making the movies last much over 2 hours, which will only be to their disadvantage come the 3rd and 4th movies.

It's been in development for a few years. I first heard about it while experimenting with beOS a few years back...at the time it was a free project, and they had schematics on how to construct various bits of it...appartently it worked so well for them that they decided to market it, and rightly so. If the websever has to check the client to see where it's located, then the system is instantly faulty because it can be tampered with. Please, correct me if I'm wrong here.

  9. My thoughts... on What Would You Want In A "Geek Bar"? · · Score: 2

An overwhelming ammount of people keep talking about net connections and bringing their laptops and sitting booths and the like. Sounds to me like they want more of a library with a nice network drop. Something about the words "bar" and "privacy" don't mix!

If I've been working at my machine at home all evening, I really don't think sitting in front of a computer (nicer net connection or not) in a different location is going to help me relax/socialize/unwind, which is kinda the point of a bar. The suggestions some people are making sound like they want something along the lines of a coffeehouse taylored towards the geek crowd.

When I think of a bar, I'm thinking about Cheers; a friendly place with familar faces and nice people who share some sort of common bond with one another, in this case, geek-hood. A bar is not a place you go to sit isolated. You go to be around people and make some human contact, even if you choose not to actively socialize.

From a DJ's perspective, that Vestax personal cutter is pretty worthless in terms of sound quality and how long the plate will last. If you want a personal cut made, and don't feel like having a minimum of 500 records pressed (unless you're trying to distribute your press), you can have something called a "dubplate" cut. A dubplate is, for lack of a better description, a disposable record. It'll last about 50 plays without degrading the sound quality, and you can get around 5 cut for under $100. If you are trying to distribute and wanna get a feel for how well you would do, you make about 100 dubs, and see how they sell and then let that determine if you will have a real press done or not.

  13. High school Sysadmin on Who Were Your Best Teachers? · · Score: 1

When I first entered high school I was one of the few computer geek type people around (this was only 4+ years ago too) and was kinda lonely in that respect. I had a few friends, but no one I really connected with. All the teachers were very good, but still teachers stuck in the system. They did what they were told and stayed within the lines of the system. The ray of light in my school was my sysadmin / computer teacher. He agreed that most of what is done in school is a waste of time and shared many of my views about many things, from the absurdity of the educational system, what music could be considered masterpieces in their own time, and various gripes about the US government. He was like a sort of Socrates to me, in that I could present him with any idea, and he would point out every hole in it, allowing me to explore more deeply my own personal beliefs, allowing me to become my own person without influencing me with his own beliefs. For that I thank him, wherever he is now.

  14. Data imaging and entry on Forbes' Five Worst Tech Jobs · · Score: 2

In deciding what job I've had that I've hated most, I had a limited selection to choose from, all my work experiences have been summertime-only positions. I think the worst had to have been a data processing company I worked for. For 8 hours a day, I would sift through forms, extracting all binding items (staples, paperclips, etc), placing batches of these forms through a large industrial size scanner, and then, from those scans, entering all the pertinent data from the forms into a computer. It doesn't sound bad, but it gets pretty damn monotonous after a few hours (which pass slower than any day in school you could ever imagine). Not only that, but my boss wasn't cool at all, and even when there was no work to be done, we would have to count, and recount, and recount again, stacks and stacks of these forms, no matter how many times they had been counted, just to have work to do. The only thing that made the time bearable was that 3 of my friends from school were working with me, eventhough most of the time they split us up. The only plusses I saw in the job was that it allowed me to skip eating dinner with my parents (always a plus), and it increased my typing speed by at least 10-15 WPM. I suppose you have to find the good in everything.

"You still need...a MS Operating system to install/commision the hardware though."

Is this the way of things as it is to be for a long time? Will large companies forever ignore non-mainstream Operating Systems which they don't want to take the time to support, simply because the company producing them can't fork over enough green to sway them otherwise? Granted they are a business and are in it to make money, but wouldn't catering to a larger consumer base be just as effective? Besides, the percentage of people running linux likely to buy their service would be substantialy high given the user proficiency and need for much more bandwidth.

If you were to ban gangsta rap, it would be called racist and Jesse Jackson would be all over the news. If you were to ban any sort of white power music, no one would make any fuss about it. Somehow people got it in their heads that it's alright to be racist, if you're a black person, but not if you're a white person. Personally, I don't get it, I don't see a difference in people because of appearance, and anyone who is dumb enough to gladly has my blessing to write offensive music that will get them shot, cleaning out the gene pool a bit.
