I call BS. Didja ever think that the name itself was enough to get people to tune in?
There is a flaw in your reasoning. While it is probably true that some people saw it because of the name, that doesn't invalidate the original claim - unless of course you believe that everybody who watched it did it because of the name.
And the Abel price is still very new.
Plus they decided to award it in the spring, which is basically as for away from the Nobel prizes as possible. My guess is that the idea is to underline the fact that despite the similarity in name, it's not another Nobel.
The problem with this idea is that the news reports only seem interested in science awards once a year, namely when the Nobels come out. And joint publicity would be better than none.
The Islamic role in the sciences tended to be more about preserving the best of what they had conquered.
There is definitely some truth in that, but you should still not underestimate the islamic original contributions to the sciences. The works of someone like Al-Khwarizmi were by all means original and ground-breaking, and he was absolutely not alone in that.
And that at a time when science in most of Europe was basically dead.
After the first couple seasons they were grasping for ideas and hyping-up the "character interactions" (AKA the soap opera phenomenon) with blood, guts and monsters thrown-in to appeal to the original fans.
The soap thing was an integrated part of the show from day one - it was never just a monster show. The brilliance of Buffy is the way Joss combined the genres and used the monsters as a metaphor for all the teen angst, growing up-problems, and generel soapyness. Well, that and the humour and emphasis on story.
it has some very loyal fans, some of whom compare it to Bab 5
Which is obviously silly (said as a very loyal fan of both shows). Unless the comparison is "Firefly is nothing like Babylon 5, except in being an amazing sci-fi-show".
And that wouldn't even be all true, since Firefly never got the chance to show it's full potential.

Well, if lack of sex drive is a symptome, I guess for my part it's just some good old obesity.
