My company has a simple solution to the virus issue though,
So does mine - we refuse to install Windows on anything. It's simply not worth the grief it causes.
Much of the equipment we design, build, install and maintain is safety-critical. We would be out of business in a week if we had to use Windows. We recently had one major braindead government demand Windows on their equipment, so we turned down the (highly lucrative) business offer. It's a pity - I would have enjoyed more trips to the USA!
NT is very "creaky and old". It's still the same old crapware kernel with the stolen (broken) BSD TCP/IP stack that Cutler threw together in 1991. It's an inviolate lump of undocumented binary that breaks if you try to change anything! POSIX compliant? MS wouldn't know POSIX if it was anally inserted!
MS haven't had a viable product since the mid-90s, and the situation's just getting worse. All the real programmers left a long time ago! The current bunch of code-monkeys are totally clueless.
Windows - a poor proprietary client for a UNIX world
It doesn't run photoshop and itunes. So what? Windows can't "run" Photoshop without falling over. Besides - who (apart from a few anally-retentive advertising typesetters) actually needs Photoshop? Also, iTunes is appalling, restrictive crapware...
The whole problem with Linux is that it's "not Windows". That's it, and all about it.
All the nonsense about the command line is just irrelevant blather. In the real world, Windows cannot be made to work effectively unless the user employs some amount of command line input - if Windows can ever be of much use!
Gates is a thieving charlatan, and always was. He knows exactly who I am, and I'll happily see him in court if he dares to try to sue me for defamation... I'd really like him to try! All this bogus "philanthropy" is just a massive tax avoidance scheme!
It's only a matter of time before the wheels finally fall off at MS. Ballmer is entirely clueless, and all the really useful programmers left MS a long while ago. The rats have already abandoned the sinking ship...
No it doesn't. There are no anti-virus programs that are any use at all. Conficker shows how easy it is to turn off anti-virus scanners. CIH shows how easy it is to make a machine unbootable. Melissa shows us how stupid the average Windows user is...
"Sufficiently locked down and inaccessible to the outside world, even an XP machine can be made safe."
No it can't. It's simply not possible. XP can neither be "locked down" or "made secure." The sooner the Windows weenies realise that, the better for all of us!
As usual, from MS, it's complete BS. Sales of netbooks at Amazon (for example) is 90% Linux. Whether the owner then pirates a copy of Windows onto their netbook (thereby crippling its performance) is neither here nor there.
Windows certainly is that insecure. It's trivially easy to modify even running processes by code injection into RAM.
I was always taught that self-modifying code was unstable and to be avoided at any cost. MS are now reaping the rewards of trying to trivialise OS security...
Funny thing is, this downturn is also persuading the pointy-haired types to look at Linux on the desktop. One company I consult for just made a wholesale migration to Ubuntu desktops and Red Hat servers - at a net annual saving of just over $500,000!
Does that mean that flaws in IE8 still leave a computer vulnerable if it's been "uninstalled?"
Of course it does. Windoze 7 is just as vulnerable to abuse as every earlier version. MS will tell you again that they've "fixed the vulnerabilities" - just like they did with Win 2000, XP, Vista and every other version.....
You're right. I say that the VMS architecture for Linux should be revived and included in the mainstream kernel.
I'm trying to push that idea at the moment, but I'm getting some resistance from the "powers that be". If this carries on, I'm going to seriously look at porting BSD...
Increasing the transmit power will decrease your S/N ratio
I don't think you understand this radio stuff at all. A power increase will improve the S/N ratio for your own network, but will cause further interference for your neighbours. I just run 2 Watts of 802.11g, flatten the competition's signals and have a useable 'net connection in my local pub.

Good move by MS on this. If they do it well.
Not a chance! MS have never done anything well!
The simplest solution of all is to ban the use of Windows on the internet! Problem solved. End of story.

Apple stole the gui idea from Tandy I believe.
You "believe" entirely wrongly - The GUI and the mouse were developed by my team at Xerox PARC in the late 70s. Gates still owes Xerox a lot of money!
What complete and utter nonsense.

"Proper anti-virus helps"

I suppose all the women staff will wear bhurkas so as not to offend the Muslim employees too!
Windows versions universally outsell by ratio of over 20-to-1.
Not around here! XP netbooks in Europe are less than 40% of the Linux netbook market...
As usual, from MS, it's complete BS. Sales of netbooks at Amazon (for example) is 90% Linux. Whether the owner then pirates a copy of Windows onto their netbook (thereby crippling its performance) is neither here nor there.
Looks like you're the one that failed English too!

There's Ballmer's bonus gone...
No - it "runs" Windows!
Do we REALLY want the USA to be like the third world?
It already is! High fuel prices are killing huge chunks of middle America, and there's mass migration to the cities...
Does that mean that flaws in IE8 still leave a computer vulnerable if it's been "uninstalled?"

I've been running exchange in an VM for over 3 years now and have had zero problems with stability or performance.
You're unique, then. I've never seen any MS software that could ever be described as "stable"!
You're right. I say that the VMS architecture for Linux should be revived and included in the mainstream kernel.

Yeah, it's nice to attack McAfee, but what is YOUR alternative?
Simple - don't use an operating system that's open to abuse by malware.
Clue: Why do you think that major banking institutions don't "run" Windows?
I wrote it. Can I have my $250k now please?

Why was it she had to drop both the fall and spring semesters?
Because she was too stupid to even tie her own shoelaces.
She is definitely unsuited to "college", even though American "Colleges" are equivalent to a European Kindergarten.
Any suggestions on a good AV package for windows then?
There's no such thing!
