  1. Slashdot article in error on Space Weather Warning · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually, the geomagnetic storm was detected on May 15th. The solar flare that caused the geomagnetic storm took place on May 13th. Someone should correct that slashdot article.

  2. its a beta version lack of features, that's all on Google Desktop Search Functions As Spyware · · Score: 1

What it probably should do, and what it probably will do a year from now is to let each user select the set of users that get google search access to their index. It is actually useful to have it span multiple users on the system, if you sometimes log in as a different user (say I log in as my wife), and have a problem remember which user you saved a particular file as. On your typical home machine, I would hazard that you want Google Desktop to behave just the way it does in the beta.

  3. Re:as bad as freddy vs jason on Solaris vs Linux Continues · · Score: 1

To me the linux vs. solaris comaparison is a lot more interesting than the linux vs. windows one. They are both Unix like operating systems, and they are both getting much of their comercial value by being used as server OSes (now a days at least). Looking at how this pans out might in the long term (whether solaris continues to thrive), might let us see the benefits and limitations of open source in a more real way than comparing it to windows.

  4. Re:guilty until proven innocent. on Lucasfilms Nixes Star Wars Live Screening · · Score: 1

It has already been decided by the supreme court that using someone elses tune but your own lyrics is parody. So how is using the visual part of someone elses film but your own dialog not parody? Clearly, they are not making money off of star wars-- if you were going to see the original story, you would be sorely dissappointed. The creative value is coming from their lampooning starwars.

  5. Sounds like a parody to me on Lucasfilms Nixes Star Wars Live Screening · · Score: 1
It comes down to whether or not this is an actual parody. If it is, it is legal (there was a 1994 decision by the US Supreme court, regarding an instance where 2live crew did a parody of 'pretty woman' that decided this).

2live crew used the tune to pretty woman, but their own lyrics.

These people want to use the visuals from star wars, but their own dialog.

It would not be a hard argument to make that the theater company is in fact doing a parody of star wars. Also, I think that just in terms of common sense people would agree that this is a parody. I only hope that the theater company stands up to Lucus Film. It would be ashame if good, funny, creative mystery science theater style parodies couldn't be made.

  6. Re:2 years ago, the alta vista was censored on Google Confirms Chinese Censorship Claims · · Score: 1

Honestly I think that giving the Chinese people google style access to non-censored information is a greater good than making a point by being banned. Even non-censored information is potentially political in that the more people understand about their world, the rational their thinking about the world becomes. Think about the potential of being able to google other countries' constitutions, live journal entries (at least for english speakers), linux/open source technical info, etc.. In my opinion that's a far greater good than the statement they could make by being banned.

While google couldn't (legally) unblock the censored sites, google could let people see the things that their goverment was censoring. Then what would happnen?

2 years ago the chinese government was censoring alta-vista:

If this is the kind of choice that google is looking at, it is no wonder that Google is acting like a good chinese citizen.
