    As an ex-mormon (I left because well, I came to terms with the fact that the whole concept of christianity is a crock) for 8 years, I still honestly have no concept of what people's problems with them are. Except for Baptists, who have problems with everything that isn't baptist. (like disney, the evil satanic devil-worshipping on the movie screen bastards that they are)

    The Masons interest me simply because they are a club which membership is based on birthright, therefore making it very hard for those who aren't a member to join. :)

    However, most mormons are good law abiding people that value their own families more than anything else. The paralells between Mormons and the Catholic church are well established, and for good reason. "Disassociated" christian sects seldom imply the level of devotion or compliance to the religious laws brought before them by their church.

    Which, considering that half of the point of religion (after accepting religious deium) is to follow the laws placed by said deium, is something that is scoffed at by every-weekend christians these days, is utterly fucking hilarious.

    This shouldn't be about "Scientology", this should be about religious oppression, which is exactly what it is. Granted, this doesn't happen AS MUCH nowadays. (because they just send a few nuns over to senator iliketowritelawsforbooty and do it that way)

    Agnosticism is the most logical choice for someone who doesn't really believe in god.

    The reason I say this, is if god really came down from the heavens and said "obey me", I'll poke fun and laugh at all the atheists who denied him.

    There are too many rules and regulations in religions today, not to mention, that 99% of the most popular religions followers either follow a subset of the commandments and teachings, or don't follow them at all and tend to be a "social church goer". My in laws are catholic and always get a hoot out of the people they never see at church except for the holiday sessions.

    Remember folks, love one another only applies if said another is white, christian, sober, and clean cut. Everyone else can go fuck themselves, right?

    I'm sorry for all the rants, but living in a christian environment when I was young really shows you how hostile "good christians" are when you tell them you abide by a strict moral code that doesn't include god, but abides by most of the moral teachings of the bible.

    At least the Krishna's and the Koresh-types out there have followers who abide to THE LETTER, whether or not I agree with their teachings.

    There are a few slashdot clients out there done in perl, it wouldn't take more than 3 or 4 lines of code to write a regex filter into it.

    It's hilarious, I see more posts about how the quality of slashdot has degraded over the last few years, and with the exception of more people and a moderation system, I see the same bullshit, with the exception of more complaints from people who are used to living in a Burger King (have it your way) world.

    Get over it. Start your own website. Write the perl filter that your probably going to sit and complain about until someone else does it, but please, don't waste my bandwidth and others bitching!

    (note: the only reason I write these is because hopefully they will die down - obviously the web has disassociated people with the concept of an OPERATOR and a USER and what those differences are, despite corporate sponsorship)

    Shea and Wilson were making a point, just like I said in an earlier post - RELIGION IS HILARIOUS. If you look at it from a very distant perspective, taking a look at all the ritual and bullshit and sidestepping and modification that's performed over the years (remember, jesus was blue eyed and blonde-haired until people started wondering how he could be that and jewish at the same time), it's damn hilarious.

    Morals can exist without religion. Marx and Nietzche (sp?) made some good points, albeit not complete ones.

    Perhaps I should have stated my point better.

    You can take a copy of aleister crowley's satanic bible, change 30% of it (to protect from copyright, which the satanic bible is AFAIK), and call it the christian bible and no one can touch you. In fact, you could call your church a christian one, sporting this bible, and STILL no one could touch you!

    It takes a leader and 1 follower to start a religion in any given state after paying a said fee. Even less if you pay the $1 to be a licensed reverend in the universal life church, in las vegas, NV. They respect all forms of religion equally and yes, in the state of nevada (and several others too), you can perform marriages.

    Why do I know this? Because religion and the figures involved in it are even funnier than the L.A. Improvisation on a friday night.

    No one owns a copyright or trademark on the name "bible". There are many, many, versions (even a comic book based on it) out there and all it takes is a little imagination, a thirst for power, and GOD (or a big government and billy graham or king henry VIII) on your side for adoption. :)

    Take a look at the assembler code for some older dos viruses (like stoned/monkey-B, AIDS, etc) you'll realize the complexity and be amazed at the fact that 150 bytes can destroy your system so silently and quickly.

    (OT: do they still sell cd's of virus code anymore?)

    Virii writers of old are the exploit writers of today, yes they sound childish and act like dipshits, but they are very smart people and should be respected, as they are responsible for a good deal of security advancements in today's computing world.

    I also had to look at the previous link to see what bubbleboy was, and I'm glad I did considering the windows boxes that I use have both of these components, not to mention my GF's machine, who probably is more than likely to find this surfing.

    In other words, please, leave your definition of "news" out of the subject.. This is an issue for many computer users AND nerds.

    Is it just me or has the "I don't know how to filter content or not click on the links therefore I'll just be lazy and complain to rob" quota jumped through the roof lately?

    Rob has an email address. The article pos(t)ers all have email addresses, just click on their names. Please, please, please, don't send your bandwidth wasting flames and complaints to the forums, where they won't be read by the posters who probably have a small amount of time in the first place. Send it to THEM.

    Doublespace contained a good deal of code from Stacker.. In fact, it was so significant to the point where certain drive utilities would recognize doublespaced drives as stacker drives.

    QEMM is an excellent memory manager that always has to have a fixpatch for every single version of windows, for some reason M$ kept breaking it's support. I eventually got tired of using it after having to buy new versions just to support windows.

    DR-DOS would not work with Win3.1, despite the fact that it was more than compatible as a fully functional dos.

    I should have explained myself better, these are examples of M$'s destruction of other companies' products through market dominance.

    Every company has a monopoly in their own product. That's why we have copyright and patent laws.

    Coke and Pepsi are healthy competing products of the same type, I see no monopoly there. A monopoly has a blanketed market share to the point where competitors are insignificant. Hence competitiveness at any sense with something "insignificant" is hardly possible.

    The lack of freedom in the concept freedom is respecting others' freedom, something that a lot of people don't seem to get.

    Am I the only one who had a game console and a computer before big rental places were shelling out copies of software for $3 a night?

    I remember buying TONS of old atari, C64, and nintendo games, that well... SUCKED. All I had were the back covers to look at and maybe a review in EGM (which normally wasn't much better).

    No one is into paying for crap. If you had a SNES emulator and spent 10 minutes typing "SNES ROMS" into a search engine, download 20 roms randomly and try them out, you would know why...

    A lot of games (ESPECIALLY games, Software Apps aren't normally as bad ebcause they can describe their features better) don't cut the "enjoyment" quota I need to shell out $50-$75 happily.

    I bought starcraft the day it came out. Why? Because I had pirated Warcraft II. I bought Diablo as well? Why? Because I needed a second CD to play on my LAN, the first one was pirated. I also bought Magic: The Gathering, but after seeing the mess they made of the interface & netplay (which is now defunct because TEN no longer exists), I decided that perhaps finding a cheaper copy of hte expansions was needed if I was going to play them.

    PIRACY SELLS. This isn't a failsafe argument, but largely true. However there are a lot of ISP's out there that are run by people just looking to make enough cash to pay for their backbone connection and hte 40GB drive attached to their private ftp servers. Those are the people that the BSA should be after.

    The FBI or Local Police probably helped. However, I imagine the BSA and CCS's words carry a little more in court than joe sixpack warez kiddie's.

    BSA is a seperate group... When the big co's finally figured out that the SPA wasn't doing much of anything, (AFAIK) MS and a few other companies put together this group to handle it for them... Kind of like an X Consortium for Piracy. :)

    The SPA is dead. There's a reason. Just like drugs, you take it away from one, but the 10 people they gave it to still have it.

    It all depends on where you live.

    For instance, a decent perl jockey here in Portland, OR, can make anywhere from $30-$60/hr (more often than not salary).

    However, less than 100 miles away in Salem, OR, I was working as Tech Support making minimum wage (that ended quickly), and the sysadmin there (who is a contributer to both the kernel and gzip) was making $12/hr.

    Moral of the story? He moved to SV, I moved to portland. The more demand for IT the higher the wage.

    SO MOVE SOMEWHERE WITH A LOT OF PIPING AND ELECTRIC COMPANIES. :)

    It's easier to find an IT job around here paying $15/hr or better than it is to find a job at McDonalds....

    Give me a break, I have a hard time believing anyone is retarded enough to insinuate that the largest (and most successful, depending on your definition of) communist country in the world doesn't have internet access.

    Now for it's people, that would make sense, which is sad but true.

    Did anyone else consider the fact that because Linux's source is open it will allow their Govt to insert monitoring and identification code into firewalls to monitor network access?

    Personally I think if anyone is giong to violate the GPL, it's going to be a large country that doesn't wish to agree to it. (Like the US or China, both of which have some startlingly parallel laws)

    While I'm a big proponent of the GPL and Linux in general, these statements are partially to completely false.

    A good portion of BSD's talent is a good portion of the "players" for the linux crowd. WINE, Apache, and a good deal of the smaller utils are BSD ones.

    IRIX hasn't lost by any stretch of the imagination, it's just not a server OS, something that people seem to forget. Many would say that IRIX is significantly more advanced than linux as a desktop OS. (which it is)

    Solaris.... Well, I can't argue with much of it, other than the fact that Sun hardware (speed and stability-wise) smacks Intel's jimmy so hard it's not even funny. At least around here (Portland, OR, a somewhat large tech town from what I observe) you start making real money when you know Sun & HP hardware.

    Linux is great, and people should acknowledge it, but it doesn't mean that there isn't room for different ideas and competition.

    This gave me a good idea... Perhaps Rob & Andover would benefit from including a clause in their copyright/release statements that require quotes not be taken from their site that are not under a certain moderation level (based on points)?

    Sounds like a good idea to keep the media from mis-representing the site's goals.

    You know what really pisses me off, is the fact that it's not hard to look at any message and tell if it has an actual point or is just intended to be a flame, despite the fact that you don't know the subject well.

    Some moderators need to visit a BBS or read some real flame wars so they know what decent flames are instead of moderating down "heated discussion".

    Heated discussion is good for people, it provides them with a way to release stress on each other and at the same time have a discussion where honesty tends to be more prevalent.

    Some of you guys need to spend more time downtown. :)

    Disclaimer: I've never used BeOS. What you read below is based off of inference :)

    If you need sound mangling (not editing) tools, you should look into sox... Not sure of the URL, but if you're working directly with the dsp and audio devices this is probably the tool for you.

    There are also Cool-Edit style sound editors out there, but they're done in Tcl/Tk, but working with large files is nearly impossible because interpreted languages are not exactly fast. :)

    There are also a few mod trackers and 808 synths out there as well. You just have to look.

    It *WOULD* be nice if someone wrote a nice fast asm/C Wave Editor though. :)

    Why don't Word95 files work with any other version?

    Why were windows update users giving away personal information without choice?

    Where is stacker? And how did their code end up in doublespace? And why didn't my drive get replaced for free when bugs in doublespace destroyed it?

    Whatever happened to Windows Refund Day?

    Where is the faster speed in Win98 that I was promised?

    Where is a remote display client/server (ala X protocol) for windows, excluding VNC?

    Why does it take the largest software company in the world almost a year to fix one of the most easily exploitable information attacks in history, the "winnuke", only to be released in full, advertised form in Win98? (for those of you who didn't know, or didn't care, the original winnuke winsock patch did not work)

    Why does MSN Messenger use 2 (somewhat) freely availiable protocols for communication but does not have published documentation for it's standard protocol, the one developed in-house?

    Why does installing any major MS app break every other program that uses the MFC's?

    Why is it, that when MS ties a browser system to their OS, that they do not make a fully availiable, extendable, modifiable API to base other browsers on, something that would at least benefit advancement instead of stifle it?

    Why do I have to pay for Win98 everytime I buy a computer from Packard Bell? (please, don't actually think i'd buy anything from em :)

    What is this channel bar thing, and why do I have to be a "first-tier" company to buy into it?

    Why is DirectX an "Industry Standard API" that only supports 2 Operating Systems?

    Why is it that ISP's get bonuses for having an all MS shop, get paid more bonuses for displaying advertisements for MS, get paid more for having a full staff of MCSE's, and on top of that, get paid EVEN MORE for only supporting MS Operating Systems?

    When does "merger" and "buyout" mean "innovation"?

    Why are thier companies in silicon valley with their single goal to be to produce something that's worthy of getting bought out by MS?

    I could go on about this all day, but my hands are tired. Anyone who's been around for more than 8 years knows how problematic MS has been in just that time.
