The problem with the BSD group is the fact that everytime one of them has a tiff with another, someone decides they're going to fork the tree. Also, the fact that FreeBSD doesn't support jack nor shit for hardware also has a lot to do with people's decisions.. I know that's what kept the ISP that I worked for from using it, they wanted to buy the machine they wanted and FreeBSD couldn't cut it, while Linux supported a wide variety of the configurations they were looking at.
Just a suggestion here... Is it too hard to make use of some of hte Linux tech that we talk about everyday, and IP Masq?
I mean, if LinuxExpo/World/Con/Assembly whatever is about linux, why not take it even further by actually SHOWING the tech in action instead of just talking about it all the time?
$1600 for 3 ethernet connections is pretty expensive, but so is all the routing equipment, wiring, etc that needs to go in there to provide those connections.
IP masq so you can read your damn email, or go to a cyber cafe for christ's sake, I had a roomie who went up to canada for a week and managed his page and checked his email by going to the cafe across the street from where he was staying...
I mean, this is a worst case, forgetting-the-fact that-you're-at-a-COMPUTER-BASED-EXPO,-dropped-your -laptop-outside-of-the-car-while-it-was- moving-and-some-hillbilly-trucker-ran-over-it,- and-American Express-didn't-come-to-save-the-day- like-they-do-in-the-commercials scenario.
Oh, and much of the stuff you listed should be on any new self-respecting linux system
(Rest of quote cropped for brevity)
Lessee here.
GTK and Glib I can understand - core GUI libraries are something that's going to be released/upgraded/recompiled often.
Lets see how much of that stuff is acutally just needed because of imlib.
ImageMagick libjpeg libgif libpng .....
It seems that only gettext is left. That's a lot of crap for "skins" IMO. Also, 90% of the fact that people were using a binary MP3 player was because it was so damn fast! Miniscule (below 1%)processor usage even on a K6-200, something that just isn't possible with mpg123 or any other decoder that i've seen other than amp.
And what is it with amp anyways? I thought that it was under a BSD-like or artistic licence anyways, which would imply free use of the code. Maybe since Winamp has brutally raped the living hell (and work) out of amp's creator the license has changed.
It's surprising that the fact that imlib, which is no more than a wrapper that has a disgustingly high-priority list of library requirements, is getting anywhere at all. Frankly with all the effort people are putting into it, it would just seem easier to play the not-invented-here (not really) game and re-write the whole damn thing themselves.
Imlib is a great, great, great, idea. But it's so poorly steered and designed it's going to have to fall eventually...
What crack are you smoking? Windows is based on an assembler core... From there... well.. I wouldn't be surprised, but saying that the OS could actually run on something so... pitiful... It preposterous.. Even for windows.

(OOPS on the double post)
:)
Let it be noted that George Lucas has known to fool people by having a "Close Person to Lucas" or something like the above article.
In other words, he did it with the Second and Especially the Third movie, what exactly is keeping him from doing it this time?
Although, Ignorance is Bliss
