Yes it is true that you can not speak of ALL men and women as being a part of a monolithic group. But I was only highlighting the fact that the majority of creative and innovative contributions to society are from men. This is an average, and neglects to mention the achievements of women. I am sorry. Women do achieve great things, but I was speaking for the down-trodden men, justifying their continued existence.
Ok when I first saw that title I thought to myself, gee more reverse descrimination from feminists (and probably lesbian feminists at that). But after careful thought I decided that would be an overly negative reacionary stance.
Instead, I thought I would come up with some good reasons to keep men around, and some of the contributions men give to our society.
Men are the great innovators of our society. 90% or more of successful business men are, well, men.
Men are more creative than women. Hold on there bucko. Lets take one important metric. Nobel prizes. Men overwhelmingly win nobel prizes, and it could be because of genetic advantages, hormone levels, or a combination of the two. It's also interesting to note that men have larger brains than women on average.
Of course on the flip-side there are very important advantages that women hold over men
Women are more caring and nurturing than men, probably keeping the world sane in the process. The emotional dedication needed to raise children is better served by women, there can be no doubt.
Women are more understanding than men and are more ameanable to concensus forming. I dont recall hearing about women starting wars.
Of course some of the reasons lesbian feminists give for the redundancy of men are valid. For example, that men will not be needed for reproduction in the future. This is undoubedtly true. But in light of all the great, vital, unique, and utterly essential contributions men give to society, I would say this is a paltry reason to give up on men. Men are here to stay, unless for some strange reason women suddenly turn into lesbians, or lesbians reproduce faster than hetersexual women.
So lets get over this lesbian feminist, anti-male propaganda. It's worthless and will end up hurting society and further the rift between the sexes.
Linux is certainly easier to use than the Apple II-e and II-gs that our school system used *exclusively* in the 80's and early 90's. Don't give me this shit about how linux wont be used in the future. Im certainly not seeing Apple IIe anywhere in industry. You go to school to learn, not to build a resume. You might as well learn how to be self-sufficient, and not reliant on $199 software from The Man.
Linux is certainly easier to use than the Apple II-e and II-gs that our school system used *exclusively* in the 80's and early 90's. Don't give me this shit about how linux is hard to use. You go to school to learn. You might as well learn how to be self-sufficient, and not reliant on $199 software from The Man.
Miguel de Icaza said that the first implementations of mono will run on linux and windows, and that other platforms will come later (a linux to bsd port would be easy, I think).
It's also interesting to note that he thinks the.NET framework (the ECMA approved portions only, not passport et. al.) will be the dominant developer platform for the next 20 years. Does anyone know how long C has been the dominant development platform? Probably longer than 20 years. Of course, in 20 years, smart robots, 1 million times smarter than us (You do the moore's law math, I might be off) will make the earth a paradise and forever consider their human creators as those lovable, misunderstood gateways to the future hive mind.
Clearly microsoft is in the phase of Deminishing Returns with its R&D effort. Linux is grabbing the low hanging fruit of Usable GUI environment, GUI development tools (Qt and kde designer, and Glade for gtk/gnome/python), and other things like basic office applications - word, excel, powerpoint clones (Just to name a few).
So how can microsoft innovate to sustain the lead it has over Free/OpenSource software?.NET is the glaring example of their new innovations. They want to suck web and back-office developers onto their windows desktop like a hoover vaccuum cleaner, and extend their developing experience with MS dev tools and servers for their High End OS line.
When Bill Gates says he's betting the future of his company on.NET, he's not joking. There's really nothing he can do to curtail the future cloning and pac-man like action of Free/OpenSource software. Microsoft has to innovate itself to future growth by locking developers into a development model which is best served by microsoft (despite being open). We will see if things like Mono and Java will offer competitive stakes on the noosphere, and I beleive they will.
Using Marketing to slow down competition, or outright kill it, is a mainstay at Redmond headquarters. Is Microsoft trying to kill Open Source or slow it down permanently, or is this all a ruse, while MS is off in some other place staking out new markets and lock-ins? Open Source bad, GPL is virus, Linux steals intellectual property -- meanwhile they come along with.NET and shared source, with a happy smiley face attatched to it to stop the bleeding of MS developers to perl, apache, php, etc. It's not working, but I may not even be tracking their real strategy.
It seems to me that MS is in huddle mode, plotting future marketing thrusts, and product innovations, probably with the sole purpose of cutting off the Open Source airsupply (developers). It's a mind game from here on out, but once we fixate an image to MS's marketing ways, it will be hard for them to shake it off. Therefore, I encourage advocates to point out what subtle deceit and lies are contained in Microsoft propaganda and marketing campaigns, and for them to offer theories as to what their ulterior motives are. A Frank discussion of Microsoft's behavior and meddling is what's needed to exinguish their attacks. Big voices carry a larger impact. And the recent IBM call that Microsoft is exhibiting extraordinary arrogance is most welcome.
gtk and gnome already run on BSD's, MacosX, Win9x, Solarid, HP-UX, AIX.. (The last three are members of the gnome foundation). UNIX is a portable environment. Ximian may not have the man power to keep up with a MacOSX port, but the source will most assuredly be there for enthusiasts to port.
I think the BSD folks will be more inclined to work with ximian than with MS... at least I hope so.
Now all that needs to happen is for SUN to get java standardized and allow Free clones...
As it stands currently you have to get virgin eyes to reverse-engineer the whole thing based on documentation only. You cant even copy the java header files!!.. even though they are self-evident.
Especially the BSD's? Excuse me, but BSD probably has 0.0002 percent of the desktop market. Linux may only have 1% but that's still a hell of alot more. Solaris and HP-UX have way more desktop share!!.. hahah especially the BSD's. Keep dreaming. Best of luck.
I mean, BSD is great technology.. I just dont see how it's important for Ximian's service business.. Maybe you could enlighten me?
It's interesting to note that Ken Thompson admits that he isn't that well versed with current linux trends (being 1999 at the time), and clarifies that he was really only referring to the media attention paid to linux, not the developers of linux, when he said that linux exists as an anti-microsoft. That was how the media was portraying it at the time.
Ken Thompson also says that Computer Science is approaching maturity as a field and wont be seeing any great new advances. Well, all I ahve to say to Ken Thompson is look at Newton the advent of Physics. Newton thought that after Principia and his other venerable works, the field was dead, and any new advancements would be small and incremental. We shall see if ken is right.
Your points about BSD are well taken, but only in a historical sense do they really matter at all. Btw, the first VM system was developed on a Multics I beleive, which isn't unix. If linux isn't innovative, than neither is freebsd or solaris. Things like reiserfs, TUX (the web server), TUX2 (the new filesystem using phase trees and directory hashes), the inclusion of/proc and devfs, etc, all show that linux is still a fertile ground for new advancements, and that it doesn't have the ball and chain of unix around its neck as much as some might say. GNOME and KDE, while some might say are knock-offs of current gui designs, themselves contain many new innovations and advancements in the field. Innovation literally means "something new". I think it has been bastardized recently to mean "Invention" which it doesnt. Invention is something else altogether, and I think linux has a few original inventions as well, some already named.
By the way, BSD didn't exist in a Free form until after Linux was already started. BSD is a derivative and AT&T Unix. and didn't fully fork from it until the mid 80's.
Saying BSD invented VM, tcp/ip, etc is no more true than saying linux did.
You mongoloid cretin. Do you have no respect for individual freedom and liberty? Because techies were screwed by abusive corperations we should somehow accept this as normal and justified? Go back to the stone age you neanderthal.
And how could you not conclude that MS plans to incorperate win32 and IE specific features into.NET?! You are stupid to think they wont.
Learn how to code like a man. Emacs or Vim, baby. Dont give me none of that pussy shit. Microsoft is your drug dealer and you gotta quit cold turkey, dude. I'll help you. Drop me a line sometime.
Considering that MS praised the judges and almost splooged spontaneously on camera in their follow-up press conference, saying how accurate the judges are, I think they agree with you.
MS has such high praise of the appelate court ruling that they must, as a consequence, agree that they are a monopoly in market for desktop operating systems.
You forget passport and a total 0wnership of the desktop. This means people will not write.NET applications for unix of any kind. You may be able to serve them from unix, and MS would be stupid to stop it.
The real problem is writing a.NET emulator. Dont you think MS will incorperate win32 and IE specific features into c#? Seems like a no brainer. With the track record of wine, I would be very surprised if they can pull of a robust, stable.NET client.
Maybe one of these two companies should work on bringing MySql up to the feature level of PostregSql.... It boggles the mind.

- Women are damned good looking.
:)
In the positive for women section. Of course this also can cause conflict and strife. Hehe.Troll? Im not even sure what troll means. Is there anything in particular that you disagree with in my post? I'd be curious to know what that is...

Wrong... .NET will be a faint glimmer in software history in future decades. The real analogy is as follows
RMS == Morpheus
Linus Torvalds == NEO
Doug Miller == The guy who ratted on Morpheus and NEO to the matrix police
Mundie, ZDNET, CNET == The matrix police.
Windows == The Matrix
Gates, Ballmer, and other top VP's == The Hive Mind behind the Matrix.
Hehhehe, anyone got a better comparison?

NOBODY Expects the Stallman Inquisition!
Amongst our major weapons are fear, dount... fear, and uh, uh, uhm, doubt.

Redhat costs $2.99 on cheapbytes for the 2 cd version.
If you get the CDR version, which comes out before the pressed version, you have to pay $4.99, for the extra cost of medium and labor.
Why lie? Trying to make MS look better. fool.
but this command is far simpler to comprehend.

Uh there's a hell of alot more to .NET than C#. You need to think a little bit deeper.
.NET is a platform, C# is java. I mean similar to java. yeah.
.NET is a services framework. C# is a language similar to java.
.NET uses passport and the windows desktop to lock people into microsoft's services and partners. C# is a lnaguage similar to java.
.NET will make heavy use of win32 and IE to perform. C# is a language similar to java.
You get it?
