The construction began today, so you can check out how to build to a large demoparty. Doors will open on Thursday at 12:00 local time, and the lights will be shut down at 18:00.
We got hold of some old cash register machines (IBM). It has DOS installed (used under some AS/400 system), but it wasn't good enough.
We tried Windows 98 and Windows NT, but all we came up with was a crashing machine. After struggeling with the MS-based OSes, we tried Linux. Everything matched together and we got everything to work!
We had some problems with X, but that solved after we added a GeForce2MX graphiccard to the machine, so now you could probably play Quake2 with quite good FPS =) Oh well, the Cyrix 233MHz processor is not that fast.
Next week they will be in production, and the main interface is.....Mozilla!
Here are some early experiments with the machine (running bitchX).
I've made a MySQL-based webshop with very good results.
At the moment we are serving about 8000 visits, 150000 pages and up to 5GB data on peak days. 50 employees are using the system daily and business is blooming.
And the setup? ONE MySQL-server with standard RH7.1 setup. No tweaks at all, just good coding.
We had a Novell 3.xx server running with 100 licenses that had a uptime of about 450 days before its retirement. This server (a 486 of some kind with SCSI-disks) was in full utilization every day and was not forgotten behind some dry wall. Actually it was in the middle of the office because the servers had to be there where the workers were, because of the slow network.
Now it is spending it retirement days in the basement collecting dust. Robust Compaq servers with Novell 4 has taken its place.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Finland every new computer nowadays comes with a Windows license sticker that is on your computer. You cannot remove it without destroying the license. Microsoft demands that the OEM attaches the sticker to the computer.
So let's say you buy a computer now. After an year a friend wants to buy that computer from you, but he is going to install Linux on it and doesn't want the Windows license and your brand new 2GHz AMD computer needs Windows.
How can you move that license to your new computer without trashing it?
If you are getting some software from the net you have to register before downloading, just send the spam straight back to them, eg. postmaster@real.com when you download Realplayer. Hopefully the world will be a better place when they notice the amount spam they send out.
Hmm.. Should I perhaps change my email to postmaster@slashdot.org?
It can be found here.
