I have started writing complaints to the FCC and TV networks about the censorship itself. I let the networks (cable too) know that I don't watch movies which have been edited for content and will immediately change the channel if I encounter them.

I, for one, can think of nothing more offensive than the act of censorship. The sheer arrogance of someone else deciding for me what I can or cannot handle hearing or seeing turns my stomach.

Another aspect that really gets my goat is this: how often is it that the censorship actually obscures the word in question? Very rarely does the context not give the word away. When this happens, I think of the word in my head. I might as well have heard the word in question.

Since the FCC cannot legally tell networks what can or cannot be said on-air, it leads to completely irrational decisions by network standards & practices departments. For example: on Conan O'Brien last week S&P bleeped the word "tits" repeatedly, while "boobies" was broadcast free and clear. The next evening on Jay Leno, Tommy Chong said "titties" with nary a 1kHz tone. It makes no sense and it insults my intelligence.

This may be a little off-topic, but the legal definition of obscene takes one's community into consideration. Nowadays, one's community can be interpreted in more ways than just your physical location. Slashdot is a community which consists of (for the most part) people who hold similar views to mine. Personally, I consider my community to be my friends- and I know that all of them love their pr0n.

The real value of this article is that it's a nice short way to explain the spyware problem to a computer novice.

The other day I ran Ad-Aware on my 16 year-old sister's Win2k machine. It had been more than a month since I did this for her (ok, I'm lazy.. tell me something I *don't* know)- so I found more than 670 suspicious items. After I cleaned it out I tried to explain how she could have possibly accumulated so many malicious programs and why people write them.

Anyway, I didn't feel like I did a very good job explaining it (since it was probably the third time I had tried to spell it out for the family and I was still getting blank looks). So I printed out this article and I'm gonna show it to everybody here. I'll probably have to explain what the hosts file is, but that's a lot easier than trying to describe all the ways those bastards try to sneak their crap onto our computers.

tell you what: if you want me to take your "examples" seriously, you're going to have to provide some sources. I've gotten out of the habit of believing everything I read since I left high school. Since every source I trust has debunked most of the admistration's claims regarding Iraq, it seems apt to call this war a "diversion".

Saddam was a survivalist who would have never allowed another power structure in his tightly controlled police state. I think he probably spent that $10 billion on palaces and tunnels to connect them- and don't forget his son's heroin addiction!

What does the GDP have to do with the deficit and the debt?! Sure American companies are raking in the ducats, they don't have to pay the outrages labor rates that American workers charge- and they sure as hell don't pay any more taxes than they absolutely have to. If the current trend continues, we're going to have to cut services and raise taxes simultaneously just to keep up with the interest; I'm going to be really angry if my brother gets sent off to war and isn't paid for it.

I phrased the statement about inspections wrong. They obviously did work, since we haven't found any WMD.

I don't have time to explain all the reasons the Bush administration has been the worst thing ever here. A short list: the environment, the patriot act, Iraq, Bush v. Gore, the destruction of our national reputation, etc. etc. etc.

There's a great strategy to get people to agree with you: "Man, if you don't agree with me, you must be stupid!"

Saddam was contained, the sanctions were working, and the inspections would have worked if they had been allowed to continue.

Now our military is stretched to the breaking point and National Guard members are being held in active duty for years at a time. Half a trillion dollar deficits are going to bankrupt the country (I bet the Nat'l debt will hit $10 Trillion by 2010). Who's going to pay for this diversion from the War On Terrorism? I'll tell you: our children and grandchildren-- if the country isn't completely destroyed by King George the Fanatic.

I just got me a Dell Axim X30 wifi and am ecstatic, it's just the right weight and has great battery life plus lots of onboard memory to start. I thought to myself the other day: what if I wanted to take my ppc with me on a camping trip? With about 5hrs of life (at peak usage) I could easily use it up in a couple-three days of ebook-reading or note-taking- what about a solar recharger? The Axim can also charge from a USB cable directly from a hub (have to do a benchmark to tell you how long it takes) and I know that USB works on +5v and can't have that much current going through it. So it seems like it would be fairly easy to come up with that kind of power of a few pev cells. I'd be curious to know if one could feed power in through an SD slot, thus making the device pretty much universal- unlike a usb slot which would certainly be proprietary. Ok, that's my 2 cents- and my first post, yay for me!
