i'm inclined to agree with this one....taking it one step further tho....
although i don't condone any of the groups in question veiwpoints, i am fer almost total freedom of expression, and these days, the 'net is the only place where anyone can do that....
the point was made that after the 'undersirable groups' have been censored (see 'crushed out of existence'), what is to stop these self appointed moderaters of the 'net from stepping on whatever group or idea they don't agree with 100%....absolutley nothing....
sure...education against these ideas might be a good thing in moderation, just so absolutly opposite or pre-concieved ideas aren't forced down people's throats...
i'm sorry, but i just can't agree with anyone stopping any sort of out most basic freedom...
i'm thinking that what would really be happening is that all the computing power of a certain human brain would be in that given computer, as well as past memories and happenings, or long term memory in the form of whatever file system they choose to use....all this does not neccesarrily mean that the george that was is in the computer, in fact, that will probably never happen the way they are talking about.... although this future machine may appear to be self consious, it would only have a copy of the past history of george and not the entire personality, as i don't think a personality could be copied from the nuerons.... in other words, the computer would have access to all past happenings in george's life, but not be able to interpret them the same way, and therefor, the 'personality' would a different one, and from there we could say that the new georg-in-a-computer would be an entirely different entity...
For all intents and purposes, User Friendly is by far my favorite net comic...i guess i could be called a religious reader.
Although a good point is being made that it can be mean (who cares tho), to crack on those pathetic users who claim to be comp-illiterate even after two years of owning a computer, he needs to lighten up just a bit....
i'm unlucky enough to work for a large southern isp and no offense meant to any fellow/.'ers, but for the most part, those people are some of the most ignorant people i have ever had to talk to...
it's these types of people that user friendly tries to crack on, not those who are actually trying their hardest to actually learn 'the craft'...
i would have to agree that it's wrong to put down people who actually want to learn and get somewhere on these damn'd machines, but the truly ignorant people who have no desire to learn anything and better themselves deserve to get the smack down....
i would have to assume that the author of that rant has has little or no experience trying to teach people how to double click or even turn their magic boxes on.....and until he/she/it has some of that experience, they have little or no right to rant on about how unfair these cartoons are.....
This may be a *little* off topic...but anyways...

When Does Y2K Begin?
·
· Score: 1
most people who are actually worried about the whole y2k 'fiasco' are actually worried about money problems. while this may be a legitimate worry for some people with less-than-up-to-date financial institutions, for almost all of them, 'y2k' has already come and gone quietly without a hitch. this is because almost all business' and financial institutions are operating on a fiscal year instead of a calendar year.
i dunno about anyone else, but to tell you the truth, this whole run-on-the-banks-because-all-my-money-is-gonna-dis apear is quite humurous....
i'm just working on getting a good seat for the end of the world....
i have no idea what the big deal is with all that y2k bullsh*t....i mean seriously...we all know that the world isn't goinf to end in two days, i hope to that no one is stocking up on anything except a champagne and/or beer...
technically, the only system that could fail are the vintage COBOL (completely obsolete business oriented language) systems because that language is the one that started this whole "fiasco" in the first place...
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't google.com asctually searching the pages themselves and mostly ignoring the meta tags there.....? i have noticed that they are on of the first sites to not bring up shitloads of porn ads when you search for "free stuff" or something like that....
i would have to agree with this one....all of this legal bullshit which stems from the "save me from myself attitude" is slowly killing us off....i mean, come on people....
i go with the basic social darwinism theory....in other words, those who are smart enought to not make stupid mistakes are the ones who aren't gonna need to be saved from themselves in the first place and therefore aren't stupid enough to use a 'tool' in the wrong way, or at least smart enough to not get caught doing it....
we're all just sitting here writing about the problem and complaining to each other....this isn't doing much of anything other than getting a bunch of techie's piss'd off....
if we were to all mail our respective congresspeople (particuarly the senators), then we may be able to do something about....
while our letters or e-mails may not make a huge difference in the final vote, it will at least let wahington know how some of us feel about the idea of having out computers, which seem to be the "last frontier" if you will, of privacy and anonymity for paranoid ppl like myself.....
we all just need to do a little something and try to get others to do the same....
