Internet for me is as essential as food... I use my internet connection to earn income.

That being said, I do pay for a business account through Comcast. I've never had problems with BT (downloading and seeding recent Linux distro releases), although I do rate limit my BT client so my connection remains responsive.

ISPs do need to enforce their policies, and people need to start reading and understanding those policies. I used to work for a wireless internet company, and it always amused me what people would try to get away with.

Oh, also... Speaking from experience at the same ISP (and this may not apply to all ISPs), but it didn't matter how much bandwidth we used, we got charged the same every month for our connection (several DS3s).

Now, if we managed to saturate that connection, we'd see performance drops on our network, and you'd have people calling in complaining about latency on WoW or speeds in general.

I think the argument that BT costs more money doesn't hold up in most cases. When you are getting DS3 or better connections, you get charged the same amount for the line whether you have a router connected and pushing traffic or not. At least, that's how it works around here (midwest USA).

I used to work for a wireless ISP, and BT doesn't even come close to the amount of bandwidth I saw for HTTP. Think YouTube and streaming porn.

Anyways, some of our wireless equipment didn't like the number of connections that BT ended up using from time to time. This is probably common to at least some equipment at most ISPs.

I'm on Comcast now, and I haven't seen too many issues with BT downloads or uploads. I only allow 20 or less connections, and throttle my client's upload and download bandwidth settings. No fancy tricks outside of the client rate limiting.

We don't need to go around and destroy property like the Bostonians of centuries past. Everyone would get thrown in jail, they'd be labeled as terrorists, and the current administration would just carry on.

This sort of thing needs to happen from the ground up, meaning we need to clean up our local governments, then move up to the state level. From there we can get some good honest people in the House and Senate, and finally the Presidency.

Personally, I think boycotting the junk on TV is a good start. Get people doing something productive, and paying attention more to the government and what goes on in the world around them. The problem isn't the politicians as much as it is the ignorance and apathy of the general public.

Actually, the tea was an important part of colonial life, and was subject to a duty which would go back to the British homeland. Boston's Tea Party was not the only place the colonists revolted, just the more famous (they simply stored tea in a warehouse in Charleston instead of tossing it in the harbor). This would eventually spark a war, and overthrow a government.

So, yeah, the issue with tea really was a direct action at the British government and the taxes they tried to levy against the folks in the New World.

That's why going to Boston to do something about our current administration is pointless, and the way hanshotfirst wrote his post allowed me to inject a little humor into the threads here on Slashdot.

Some people around here couldn't find humor even if it was stapled to their forehead and lit on fire.

I think most people in IT who have half a clue and can manage to run a company email server are considering the prospect of outsourcing to GMail unprofessional, not the idea of having GMail host a domain in general.

When set up properly, an email server pretty much sits in the data center and "just works". Having total control over the email server is also important, depending on what your company does, and whether you are subject to any type of audits from an outside source.

Wow. I can't believe how bad the OS (gOS) is on either system. The gPC2 isn't as bad as the laptop, but it's still pretty darn bad. I ended up using a PCI video card just so I wouldn't have to deal with the crappy drivers for the integrated graphics for the gPC2.

The gBook is simply a joke with regards to driver support. I ended using the OpenChrome drivers to get the video to actually display the 1440x900 resolution (VIA binary blobs couldn't even do this!), and now I have to battle the WIFI chipset.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS running on the gPC2, and put Slackware 12.1 on the gBook because I knew I was going to have to hack the crap out of that kernel and X to get things going.

I was disappointed in the performance of both systems, and the issues with drivers really made my purchasing experience a poor one. VIA is probably the worst thing that could have happened to Linux from a hardware standpoint, and Everex is not doing their brand name any justice by selling products with such poor software engineering.
