I'm not a programmer, so I'm not even going to attempt to make this, but maybe getting the idea brewing in a few of the heads out there might get something going. I've always thought the lacking part of BT was that it used static torrents. Basically, in order to download the latest episode of say.... Alias, you need to find a torrent of that episode.
Whether this is possible or not, I don't know, but having dynamic torrents, which automatically update themselves and share out the files inside of them would be really useful. Expanding on the example above, you have 10,000 people opening up The Alias Torrent right when the show ends, and once someone has the episode ready to send out, they drop it in the folder, the dynamic torrent updates itself, and sends it out to everyone.
It's almost like a shared folder across the net. Downsides? Plenty, viruses, bogus files, goatse's, etc... But who knows, it might work. Maybe a "[X] file added to community, would you like to dl it?" would be useful. I'm just sick of having to hunt around for porn, if I have a dynamic porn torrent which automatically downloads the porn for me, I'd be happy. Hah
I dunno, just wasting time at work. So programmers, get to work, I expect this to be RC by next week.
After buying my Axim X30 PDA for $260 last week, I can't understand why anyone would spend that amount of money on something that *just* plays MP3s. What??? The new one will show pictures? What a marvelous feat! Not really, I can watch streaming divx movies/TV from my home network from anywhere in the world with a internet connection. I have a touchpad screen that allows me to easily find/change between songs while commuting versus having to use a scroll wheel. Those are just a fraction of the uses.
Sure, the most useful features of PDA's might be difficult to set up for non-geeks, but that still doesn't justify Apple ripping people off in the CE market. What? They rip people off in every market they are in? Guess they're just following trend then.
I feel sorry for those who are suckered in to the way of the iPod, and any geek who reads/. and has an iPod should be ashamed of yourself. Ditch the iPod, save your money, by a far less expensive PDA and have a much more enjoyable commute. Sure they don't have the storage of an iPod by using CF or SD cards, but when iPods first came out, they held a fraction of the storage they have now, and I didn't here anyone complaining. Buy a gig card, mix some MP3s, movies, games, quake, etc... and you'll be entertained for hours. Do you really need 60gb worth of MP3s at your fingertips? No. I have over 100 gb of MP3s on my home server and I can handle only having 512 meg SD card(s). At least Microsoft's CE supported devices are actually multifunctional. Don't be stupid, don't get an iPod.
I've been reading/. on a daily basis for about 6 months now, and I understand this site's love for linux stories, but does any story that uses the word linux is a good light deserve story status? No. This was quite possibly the worst thought out and written story I've seen on this site.
I AM OLIVER KABILA FROM THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO ZAIRE, SON OF LATE LAURENT M. KABILA, THE FORMER PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES REPUBLIC OF CONGO ZAIRE. PRESENTLY TAKING REFUGE HERE IN ACCRA GHANA (WEST AFRICA) AFTER THE SUDDEN DEMISE OF MY FATHER, FOLLOWING HIS ASSASINATION BY HIS PERSONAL BODY GUARD ON THE 16TH JANUARY 2001. I REFER YOU TO THE TIME MAGAZINE COVER STORY OF THE 12TH OF FEBRUARY.
ON TRUST AND IN UTMOST CONFIDENCE, I AM ESTABLISHING THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU IN BENEVOLENT SPIRIT AS TO ENHANCE IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION TO AN OPPORTUNITY RIGHTLY AT HAND. IN A CLOSE DOOR MEETING HELD WITH MY FATHER BEFORE HIS SUDDEN DEATH, HE DISCLOSED TO ME CERTAIN FACTS AND SECRETS ABOUT HIMSELF AND THAT OF MY STEP-BROTHER GENERAL JOSEPH KABILA (I MEAN THE PRESENT PRESIDENT OF MY COUNTRY). CERTAIN DOCUMENTS WAS GIVEN TO ME THAT DAY BY MY FATHER REGARDING 1000KG OF 22 KARATS GOLD WHICH HE DEPOSITED IN A PRIVATE VAULT OF A SECURITY FIRM HERE IN GHANA. IN ADDITION, $168 MILLION USA DOLLARS CASH IN TWO TRUNK BOXES ALSO IN THE VAULT. THE $168 MILLION USD WAS TO BE USED TO WORK ON LEADERS OF THE ECOWAS COMMUNITY, ENHANCING HIS FULL SUPPORT IN POWER. BUT THIS AIM WAS NOT ACHIEVED BEFORE HIS DEATH.
THE ISSUE OF THIS MONEY AND THE GOLD HAS BEEN A SECRET BETWEEN MY FATHER AND I UNTILL HE DIED. THEREFORE, I AM TAKING THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENRICH AND EQUIP MYSELF TO FACE MY SECRET AMBITION. AS NOBODY CAN CONVINCE ME THAT MY STEP-BROTHER (JOSEPH) IS NOT BEHIND THE DEATH OF MY FATHER.
I HAVE SINCE BEEN IN THIS TOWN IN PURSUANCE OF THE CLEARANCE OF THIS CONSIGNMENT AND I AM SO FAR ABLE TO CLEARIFY/CERTIFY ALL PAPERS WITH THE SECURITY COMPANY (WHERE THE CONSIGNMENT IS BEING KEPT IN A PRIVATE VAULT). I HAVE INSPECTED THE BOX BUT COULD NOT OPEN IT DUE TO SECURITY REASONS. BECAUSE MY FATHER DID NOT DECLARE THE CONTENT AS MONEY BUT PERSONAL EFFECTS.
ALL I NEED NOW IS A RELIABLE FOREIGN PARTNER WITH WHOM I CAN CLEAR AND TRANSFER THIS MONEY ABROAD.I HAVE AGREED TO GIVE A REASONABLE PERCENTAGE OF THE TOTAL VALUE OF THIS CONSIGNMENT AS YOUR SHARE. YOU MAY ASK IF I DON'T HAVE INTERNATIONAL CONTACTS TO ASSIST ME ON THIS ISSUE. THE ANSWER IS YES, BUT I HAVE AN AMBITION RIGHT NOW AND WANT TO LIVE IN DISGUISE UNTILL MY AMBITION IS FULFILLED.
I EXPECT YOUR KIND URGENT RESPONSE BY PHONE OR EMAIL: mustty2@yahoo.com OR mustty1@yahoo.com TO ENABLE ME FURNISH YOU WITH MORE DETAILS ON THIS BUSINESS.
THANKS IN ANTICIPATION.

An yes... I'm going to reply to my own post. In the stories where it is one or two people who don't read the article and comment on it, then it's their fault. But the non-readers can't take all the blame when the essential part of the story is left out of the summary!
and stunned that/. is picking the logical viewpoint of this issue. Universities have every right to ban wireless access points from being hooked into their network. Everyone here with wireless set up in their house knows that probably over half of the networks in their neighborhood are SSID'd "default" and "linksys" and "netgear" without any encrption at all. Our University even went as far as to ban routers. Why? Cause morons would plug them in backwards and bring down the whole hall. Few people out there really take the time to understand the technology they have in their home. Until the day when they do and understand it's power, F 'em
Totally off topic, but/. is the best resource for IT legal discussion that I've come across. I've been accused of pirating a $25 program and would like some advice before I consider settling for the demanded amount of $80. Not going to go into depth of details here, but if you could offer any advice, I would really, really appreciate it. Email me at dgath[n.o.s.p.a.m]@msn.com.
Thanks

I was going to submit this story a looong time ago, but then realized that it was ridiculous to consider this news and opted not too.

Because we don't like reading articles, it's much easier to let the /.'ers summarize the story for us. :p
