I would say there are big differences between win95 and ye-old-linux-releases, or at least, there should be:
The biggest is that you can get the super-new-linux-release for either nothing, or next to bothing. Upgrading from 95 costs you real money.
this box
However, perhaps the more important point is that not only does upgrading from 95 cost you real money - it's otherwise unecessary. If you only have 95 installed for playing games, and use (say) Linux for real work, this must be a real annoyance. Is DX8.1 really so odd that it can't work under 95, but can under 98? I think not.
I'm in the position of having win98/Linux dualboot. I *only* have win98 for games now, having moved everything else to Linux (modulo staroffice 6 beta problems, everything is very good). By the time 98 no longer cuts it for games I'll be faced with a real problem: will I have to buy a retail version of XP just to play PC games? God I hope not!
To be honest, I think it's far more likely that I'll just buy PS2 releases, or whatever console is around in 2003, and save myself the hassle of have two OSs on my PC...
There was some discussion on sci.crypt after the AES announcment. A fair number of people liked serpent - I think it is very "conventional" - a very good thing for a cipher. It didn't perform as well as some of the others though (especially in hardware IIRC). Serpent would have been a very secure choice, but I think Rijndael won out as a good "All round" contender.
So size matter ?-) Basically - yes - that is with "all other things being equal". Even if the NSA is "Yet another US goverment office out of control", I don't see (for example) that GCHQ would be any different - except for being smaller;-)
Both the NSA and the CIA failed completely 11.sep. That's true. However, it's not like GCHQ knew exactly what was going on but didn't bother telling the Americans is it?! Everybody failed.
I think the fact that it's academic (ie from the open peer-reviewed world, well discussed and attacked), plus the fact that nobody in Europe has anything the size of the NSA would helps.
You're way out of luck. It (OP) wasn't a discussion of values, it was a moral judgement. I'm afraid that the rest of your comment is completely misguided.
What you seem to have missed is the fact that Christian values, and Christian moralising remain so, even when spoken by Satan himself. It doesn't matter who says it, the words are still the same. Thus, it was Christian moralising. Was it written by a Christian? I don't know, I don't care and it doesn't matter.
Here, have a virtual clue: '*'
ps) As it seemed to have gone straight over your head, my OP was a joke pointing out the irony of the post I replied to.
most people would agree to community standards when it comes to what is or isn't moral
That's exactly the problem - most people dont have the willpower, nerve, brains or self dignity to bother even having their own moral compass. They just say "Gee, I don't know. What does everyone else think?" and go along with the rest of the sheeple.
And did Sid actually SAY he was OPPOSED to adult entertainment?
Did I say that he did? Do I care? Are you awake? Hellooooo?:-)
I've just switched distros to debian on 3 boxes (home from mandrake, web/mail/cvs/db box at work, and a development machine). I've been really pleased that although it's a bit of a PITA to get set up right, once it's done, it's really done. Yes, apt-get is lovely.
But if things like apache and mozilla (and for me procmail and cvs) are starting to fall, how is the future looking for debian? The thing I love about it is the the fact that almost everything I use I can just apt-get, and it all fits together. If I had to start getting my own packages a lot, it would really dampen debian's best feature.
I really hope this is merely a bit of sabre-rattling done in order to stir up some activity before release.

The entrance offerers had questioned thereby whether the entrance to unpleasant, abroad can be prevented gehosteten Websiten at all effectively.
Perhaps the PS2 will do a likewise transformation.
I suspect so. What I can't help thinking is that we're already seeing 80% of the Xbox potential. Of course, this was the whole design issue,: it's enough like a PC to be easy to develop for.
Like the PS(1), I think we've only seen a fraction of the capabilities of the PS2, I would guess GT3 is only showing us 1/3 to 50% of the best of what the PS2 can offer.
Keyboard, mouse, peripherals, and most importantly connecting opengl to the screen!
Something that might seem a little odd about OpenGL is that it can't open a window, so you always need some platform specific code (normally GLUT, which is already crossplatform) to do it. SDL is a nicer alternative.
Not really. Most people using windows for 3d graphics in the workstation area are using a high end graphics card. By that I mean GeForce3 or faster.
They all come with OpenGL drivers. You dont even notice that MS doesn't ship them. Install video cards drivers, get OpenGL.
MS is really in a position to lose market here to Linux because of this: Linux on a PC with fast 3d (via nvidia for example) is infinitely more like the workstation being replaced than NT on a PC is.
At the higher workstation end (higher than GeForce3), people aren't yet looking at windows because the hardware isn't there anyway.
I think it'll be a while before OpenGL dies, especially as in all markets people are finally moving up the ladder - to scenegraph API's like this one.
If the SG supports both DX and OGL backends then you dont even have to think about it.
Well, that seemed an OK idea, but I was thinking "Why can't you already do this within the current DVD framework?" I mean, the editing bit is really simple. If you can stick different camera angles and stuff on DVD's, why not this?
Anyway, it says on their website FAQ that this will be included in "Next Generation" DVD players. What is a NG player? Apparently "A next generation DVD player is a DVD player that has a hard drive and internet capability. They are 25 companies currently that plan to release these type of players within the next 12 months."
Ah joy. I love the thought of needing a DVD player that can store stuff and dialup companies for me. Maybe I will be able to get streaming advertising or something when I press the pause button.
Why oh why do we need a new generation of DVD players?
Flamebait? Can somebody explain to me what has happened to /. ?

I thought it was going to be a story about Afghan goat herders ;-)
I hear that the founders are starting up a new company: the "Our premiums are really low because we *never* pay out" insurance company ;-)
Unless of course, they were intending using Oracle anyway. Something that doesn't seem unlikely given the size of the project.

It isn't the 40's anymore. Due credit to the UKs wartime effort, and GCHQ's discovery of PK, but they aren't the size of the NSA - nor should they be.
I dont know about Poland, but I think it's safe to assume they don't have anything bigger than the NSA either!
I think the fact that it's academic (ie from the open peer-reviewed world, well discussed and attacked), plus the fact that nobody in Europe has anything the size of the NSA would helps.
AES is Rijndael (ie the name of the cipher selected selected as AES is "Rijndael").

Thank you AOL
-->ah, reading 'Christian' into a post that could have been made by a drunk buhddist for all you know. As you say, "only on slashdot."
Your mistake is thinking that only Christians can expound Christian values.
Better luck next time
I'm quite grateful for the wonderful morally-impaired people folks who bring me my daily smut.

You should be. As long as you're paying their wages I assume they're grateful too, even if you are being a complete hypocrite

We use wildcats too. They are very nice, but a PC with a wildcat just doesn't compare with a multipipe Onyx.
Mainly, windowsIrix, PCOnyx and WildcatRE3
Value for money is a completely different thing though.

That stuff's expensive. Maybe I should diet or something...
