I just can't seem to come up with any valid, rational, or reasonable arguments against anything you said.
Hmmmm.....Nope!
P.S. I had to show that video to my 17 year old stepdaughter. She sat there silent for a moment, then remarked:"Somehow I feel mentally violated by that. It makes me almost ashamed to be part of THAT human race."
"And demonstration of negative results is also good for when the matter comes up again."
Excellent point. Is'nt this a basic keystone of Good Science (tm) and research. Every time you fail to get your expected results, then investigate why/how/what the causes, you learn something about it.
'Hmmm....can't get there from here like that-well,back to the drawing board!' Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Sooner or later you narrow it down to what works, then test and refine. Or maybe you get lucky because your SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) works, then you have narrowed things down considerably.
Keep smoking that stuff. Maybe try some LSD to expand your mind more than it is now, maybe you will even meet this 'god' thing you are rambling on about.
I agree with old AL: religion is no more than 'childish superstition'.
At least you all are amusing and entertaining sometimes...just like a sitcom, and just as predictable.
I've finally given up after 4 tries. For some reason it insists on trying to install itself back onto the DVD. I even redownloaded the ISO, reburned to CD and DVD, all to no avail.I have never encountered anything like this before, and am now convinced it's 'not ready for prime time' yet.
I'll just stick with my comfortable Kubuntu setup.
That's what was confusing me when I actually RTFA, and *gasp* checked all the other links provided. (Joe Sixpack mode- see rant below, 'cause I am him) 28,000 light years away, 'shockwave' that's creating the emissions that CHANDRA observed moving at 5% of light speed, only 'a sploded' 140 years ago....WTF? I was waiting to be told next that we have mis-understood gravity, and our feet are really at the top of our bodies, and that gravity actually was pulling us 'up' to the center of Earth!
It used to be so simple: sky was up, ground was down, and we all go round and round.
*start rant* AP (Associated Press) style coverage of astrophysics (or any other science) may not be the way to cover news of discoveries. Every link and quick search results yielded pretty much the same crap being regurgitated. Yes, I know that there are some more accurate sources out there to clear this up (somewhere), but Joe Sixpack with interest in this stuff is doomed to perpetuate his ignorance in spite of trying to better himself with this crap. *end rant*
I'm glad to see you got some +insightful mod love, hope you also get some +informative mod love to go with it. I feel much better about this now, Thank You!
P.S. I consider myself in the 'high end' of the Joe Sixpack category on this subject- astrophysics has been an avid interest for me since I was a kid, since Dad worked for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center and Wallops Island. I used to love to climb into the Mercury and Gemini capsules and 'play' astronaut for hours on end-better than a babysitter or day care for Dad...he could take me to work and turn me loose, always knowing where to find me! I ended up working ther during my senior year of HS, and the next year until I enlisted. (but I 'only' worked for BFEC as a subcontractor in Goddard's NTTF facility in Logistics, but it was still way cool for me!)
Sounds like a much better deal than we have here (USA).
I really miss the www.tv-links.co.uk site.
I went back to reading. My imagination is much better at providing the imagery while reading than most show/movie graphics. And I don't need a fast-forward button!
When I first started paying attention to TV, the commercials were between the half hour shows, or one commercial break (a word from our sponsors was the term used) halfway through an hour long show. Then it went to commercials between the half hour shows, with one commercial halfway through at 15 minutes. An hour show would have the commercials between, and then every 20 minutes. Then it went from two commercials between shows, and then one ever 15 minutes. Then two every 15 minutes. Then two every 10 minutes. When I finally could not take anymore, and just quit watching TV altogether about 5 years ago, it was 3-4 commercials every 4-5 minutes. I tried recording a 30 minute show-pausing during the commercials, and ended up with 18 minutes of show...the other 12 minutes were commercials...over one third of the 30 minute show was commercials, not the show.
And those insidious 'infomercials'- 30 minute commercials WITH commercials...WTF?!?!?!
Enough already! So yeah, I enjoyed being able to watch a show with only one or two SHORT commercial breaks, but I cannot enjoy the way it is now where the commercial breaks seem to be longer than the show breaks in between them.
To me it seems to have done a complete 180. It started as a way for advertisers to use a show to get a chance to show an ad or two and provide the entertainment draw to increase the audience to view those couple of ads. Now the show is only an vehicle to drown you in commercials, the show be damned.
So now, with a DVR (with say a 200GB HDD), you're filling up over 70GB's of it with commercials, and during playback, you end up having to either hold on to the remote, or pick it up every 4 minutes to fast forward through the commercials.
No wonder most kids today have short attention spans, or just do something else and leave the TV playing in the background.
This sounds like a study done back in the early 1990's (given an $86,000 USD grant) to find out if people preferred warm or cold showers, and why. Duh!
How long until some overzealous miscreant posts: "But does it run on Linux?"
When it happens, I propose that he should be tarred_n_featherd, then chained to a sweat-shop assembly line 'embedding' Linux into chipsets while surrounded by life-size posters of RMS in a speedo.
No, generally, I'm relatively sure I'm Al Einstein. You haven't seen that Hawking fellow have you. I heard he was looking for me, and figured he'd never find me here! You won't tell him will you?
Thanks for the correction. You are correct, it's been a few years since I have had to deal with the different types of chips. I was just trying to help the guy out.
First, congrat's on getting modded this high as an AC! seriously, Well Done!
In reverse order:
2. This subject I was going to reply to, but you beat me and said it better than I had planned on. Yes, WTF??!!?? This IS good news! Any time the GNU/Linux and/or the FOSS crowd get thrown a bone with this much meat on it, it is a GOOD THING! Soooner or later something like this will be 'the straw that broke the camel's back'. (pedant's warn-off...my old school grammar teachings have only been invalidated IN YOUR OWN MINDS, not mine- Back Off with the it's/its possessive/plural crap...I'm not impressed or interested)
1.I'll have to take your word here, as I know next to nothing about frame buffer coding. #2 was what I was interested in responding to. Thanks.
Okay, I'm a little confused here. I did not think that a ROM could be flashed, only an EPROM could. Has something changed, or is the term ROM now commonly used for all embedded chips?
Really not trying to be a pedant, just want to know. If this is a case of 'not confusing the proles', then okay- sometimes it is easier to 'go with the flow' instead of being bogged down in technospeak, but I'm really starting to doubt my education and (slim) knowledge here.
I don't know much either, but will chip in what I do know.
1. probably no unless whatever malware was loaded is actually Doing Something actively. Otherwise it is just kind of idling in a 'protected' (from OS) space of RAM
2. really not trying to be a pedantic jerk, but ROM cannot be flashed (Read Only Memory), did you mean EPROM? (which IS flashable)
Also sometimes EPROM's can be reflahed to OEM state, sometimes they can be trashed by a faulty/malicious flash-depends (YMMV)
3. I'm not sure, but as per #2 above, reflashing your BIOS EPROM, you may get back to a 'clean' state, or could send the motherboard back to the mfr. to have the BIOS chips replaced- probably just as easy/cheap to replace the motherboard. (again- YMMV)
From TFA, and some of the above seemingly knowledgeable posts above, this looks like something that is running 'between' the mobo/BIOS and the OS, so unless it started Doing Something that the OS would notice, then nothing in #1 (tools) you mentioned would have a clue.
Please take this all with a grain of salt, and if have given you bum info, I apologize, but it seemed no one else was bothering to answer you. I would be glad to be corrected (for both of us) if I am wrong here.
You may be a mathematician, but you need to go back and learn some spelling and grammar if you want to get whatever it is you are trying to say out.
WTF is 'hir'? Also, it is only YOUR judgment that something unethical or illegal is happening with ALL of our soldiers. Some...maybe, blanket accusation of 'all', uhm, no. That's the price you pay by using HUMAN BEINGS for soldiers. It has been a known factor that people will be people for many centuries. Nice move to try and take human nature out of your mathematician's equation, though!
And as FWIW, ahh...nothing actually except in your own little narrow world. Have a nice day!:-)
Pardon my lack of eloquence, but fsck you, and the white mule you rode in on. Unless you've been there, you cannot understand. No other reply is needed here.
I sincerely apologize if I have offended an active duty US serviceman. "I also know a lot of people from other service branches, from various backgrounds with varying perspectives on the war."
Which war? In the end they are all the same old shit. War on Drugs, War on Pedophiles, War on anyone who does not agree with US, War on Iraq (what was that about again?), War on whatever.
But, swabbies? Huh! While you were on yer 'boat', (Arrghhh!) I spent 3 1/2 years active in the US Army in W.Berlin in the late 1970's, to early 1980's providing security for E.German defectors to skip across the borders to OUR side. (3rd Army,75th Rangers, Airborne-HooRah!, 10th Special Forces Group, team leader of Team #8....*look at my UID: RTS008-my initials plus my lucky 'James Bond' 00# and team #8!!!)
I hear you: "Just some perspective from a Sailor." I have worked with you Swabbies and your SEALs, and I also am proud of my service to my country. I helped get a lot of scientists and politically important (at that time) persons to 'our' side back then.
If it calms your mind, I have been awarded 3 Purple Hearts (too dumb to duck!) awards, the Distinguished Service Cross.....with clusters, and NONE of that on public record. I don't mind because I know what WE accomplished as a team.
Most of what I did is still classified even though the Berlin Wall fell.
That's okay, we know, and WE feel good about it. Nevermind the fact that most of us have had to move around the US to avoid all the bounty hunter death threats since then. (check out the STASI, and E German Border Guards)
I had a 600,000 DM price on my head, and 400,000 DM price on any of my team mates capture back when.
Yeaah, I was committed to 'doing my duty', and I did it well. Actually too good by your standards, and yes, it was in the late 1970's to early 1980's, probably before your time. I still have the #4 slot on all-time highest confirmed kills by any US sniper in the books.(damn you Carlos Hathcock with 97 confirmed!!!)
I also did it out of patriotism and sense of duty...at the time, there was no draft... I VOLUNTEERED, as did ALL of my team-mates.
I was proud to have served then, and am still proud I did. So I have to wonder what your point is?
Okay, I've been drinking and have my offensive side in control...correct me if I go too far, but...
I guess you feel complacent and superior cruising around in your sub, able to lash out and proclaim superior judgment on the rest of the world? WTF?!?!?
Come to shore, get out of your nice little protected world (your sub), and I'll be glad to give you a touch of reality and a good old fashioned bosun's style asski9cjing to wake you up.
I was just sick and tired of the USA soldiers being on the shit end of the posts here. Nothing more, but now my dander is up. Sorry you were on the reception committee. It is a fact that they are there, and if you would talk to some of them, you would understand that most do not want to be there, but they are doing their job, and some of it is appreciated by the Iraq people. (not all, but some)
