  1. thanks for the link on Call For Grant Proposals In Perl Development · · Score: 1

I was wondering if there was an up-to-date graph somewhere. P.S. despite the various ignorant comments, there are some people excited about Perl 6. Thanks for your hard work!

  2. Re:Finish Perl 6 or give up on Call For Grant Proposals In Perl Development · · Score: 1

Complaining about the long wait for Perl 6 is so 2003!

In the mean time the core Perl developers have been busy designing and building the programming language (and runtime environment) of the future.

2009 is the year to start getting excited about Perl 6 again!

For anyone paying attention, things have been really starting to come together in the last year.
    - Parrot is nearing 1.0 production release (in March 2009)!
    - Perl 6 on Parrot (Rakudo) works and gets new features added every day (see recent note saying "now passing 765 more tests than two weeks ago")

There is nothing dead about Perl 6 apart from public opinion (which will change).

TPF grants just reinforce the commitment that is there to push ahead with the vision that is Perl.

Most people may have abandoned Perl for more fashionable languages at the moment, but when there is a shiny new Perl 6, the crowds will return (and Ruby will be looking quite old-skool).

I predict that the extra effort that has gone into designing Perl 6 will pay dividends 10 fold, with the language being a major player for the next 50 year (instead of 5).

    Go Perl 6 !!!

  3. an unrealistic ideal on Getting Accurate Specifications for Software? · · Score: 1

This is the kind of problem I always run into, websites, databases, you name it.

It would be great to be given a comprehensive and accurate spec for development, but in my experience it just doesn't happen! Maybe if your working for some large development company - where it is someone else's job to develop such a specification, you may be lucky enough to experience such bliss, but elsewhere you can just forget it.

More and more I am learning that it is just easier to do everything as best you can, using your own judgement, doing all the information gathering yourself. If what you do is not what is wanted, then just make the changes. It might suck, but that's how it goes.

  4. ...the article is just confused on Novell Releases OO–OOXML Translator · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apart from the good news of an OOXML translator for OpenOffice.org, that was a terrible article!

It seems the author is a noob who is only just putting his toe in the water with a first install of OOo. After anouncing the news of the translator, he then starts rambling on about Evolution on windows, whatever.

Who said it was the goal of the open-source community to crush Microsoft??! While it may be true that many in open-source folk don't like Microsoft, I think it would be more accurate to say that the goal of open-source is to produce good free software that is based on open standards that anyone can use, improve and learn from. It's about freedom, not Microsoft bashing.

Sure, Evolution on Windows might be great for some people - but that's another story, can't we just be happy with the good news (about the translator) for the moment?

  5. Obviously, people don't care on Apple is DRM's Biggest Backer · · Score: 1

I'm sure a lot of people care about DRM, particularly the sorts you find on slashdot. But hey really, if people cared about DRM so much then Apple wouldn't be able to sell song.

Apple is just like every other large greedy corporation, they do whatever they can get away with to ensure the biggest slice of profit for themselves.

Apple doesn't want to piss off it's customers (too much), otherwise they wouldn't be successful. So, if they think Joe Shmuck will tolerate a bit of lock-in, or DRM (by keeping them happy with shiny new toys) - then lock in and DRM is what he'll get.

I point the finger at the money focused structure of the public company, weaknesses in the free market model, and lazy consumers who only care about themselves.

If you really care, then vote with your feet! Take your money and loyalty elsewhere - then apple will start to listen. (try emusic.com or something)

  6. A Ploy by Microsoft? on Norman & Spolsky - Simplicity is Out · · Score: 1

Perhaps Microsoft is trying to kick-start a trend to make it fashionable to use complex software. It would sure be a whole lot easier than re-designing windows and office to have a simpler user interface. The bonus is of course that it will only boost the appeal of Linux! (well, there are more things you can configure) Perhaps more relevant than this unhelpful article would be Jakob Neilsen's recent post on Progressive Disclosure
