  1. Re:Is that REALLY the perception? on It's No Game At Apple · · Score: 1

I agree with the point that the PC has the most powerful hardware, with nvidia and ATI releasing new cards every 6 months or so. However it would be interesting to know the actual baselevel of hardware the majority have.

Hardcore gamers will get the best they can afford when they can afford it, however teenagers, etc have limited funds so I doubt they'll have the latest Geforce cards. So games will have to cater to get their games playable on average hardware, I think the current Intel iMacs are at or above this level (someone who knows better than I do might know?) so that's not a barrier, at least not now.

The only problem is that iMacs aren't upgradable, however if an Intel Power Mac would be?

I think it's more of the API, coding barrier. Games use DirectX, porting them to OpenGL, etc takes money, and the 5% marketshare of the Mac doesn't mean they'll get their money.

However looking at iD Software, etc, who use OpenGL and have Windows, Linux and Mac versions can release for each platform without worrying about the cost of a rewrite (Comment http://apple.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=187676&c id=15482879 makes the point wonderfully).

Most PC gamers might be surprised at the number of games available for the Mac, when I looked for them I was surprised. The thing is I didn't know they existed because Electronics Boutique doesn't sell Mac games (and having a PC I didn't need to look anywhere else).

You can pirate software, you can't pirate hardware.

I can't find the article that discusses the point, but this (http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archive s/2006/04/os_x_on_generic.html) is close enough.

That's why Apple have Bootcamp, they want to encourage people to buy their hardware.

Duh yourself, no need to be rude.

Interesting point, however it seems the review writer doesn't realise that Apple sells hardware, hence Windows actually isn't competition for OS X. That's why Apple released bootcamp, OS X is just a reason to get people to buy their hardware.

And I think the people who want to use OS X aren't doing it just for the eyecandy. I know I didn't.

Thanks! This is looking exactly what I need.

I did have a look at the OpenOffice Database program, and it's looking like it's going to become the next access, with a bit more development.

Yes, but Access isn't free. I have to spend about AUD$450 to get a copy, which the small business I work for isn't really prepared to do. I've got MS Office at work pretty easily replaced with OpenOffice, except for Access. Moving the Access data to a MySQL database, etc isn't a problem, but being able to generate a UI and reports as easily as I can with Access is the trick.

Being someone who actually works in the radio industry, there's more uses for a radio modem than hooking it up to a computer. And 802.11 isn't a magical solution you can use for them. i.e. Courier companies use radio networks for GPS tracking, as do Shires for tracking their garbage trucks for vehicle logging. A modem like this isn't new (except maybe it's size) but it's a tool to use when other tools don't work.
