Last month I ordered unbundled DSL from Speakeasy in NYC. It cost $100 extra for a technician installation (mandatory) and a bit extra per month, but I figured no biggie.
One month later the Verizon technician had failed to set up the wiring necessary to provide this line. In exasperation I ordered a land line and changed my DSL order to piggyback on top of it. Within a week Verizon had set up the wiring for the phone line, and a few days after that Speakeasy had the DSL up, with self-install, no technician necessary.
I'm so mad at Verizon I am going to cancel my cell service with them... what else can I do; I want to keep my DSL!
As the essay points out, another advantage of running an 'underpowored' box is that it's quieter, too. I built a cheap machine with a Via C3 a couple of years ago, passively cooled so that the only moving parts were the disk and the power supply fan. Unlike most quiet PCs sold nowadays, it really was very quiet. I stuck it in a closet next to my desk and I couldn't tell if it was on.
I enjoy driving, but not all the time. I'll be sad when they take away my stick shift (and steering wheel?) but there are definitely times -- commuting, long trips, etc -- when it would be nice to put the thing on autopilot.
Too bad someone already has registered woogle.com, otherwise MS could have used that name for their search engine. However, msnoogle.com is still available.
Since I'm not M$ or a shareholder, I want to maximize public good (which includes my good), even if it comes at the expense of M$ shareholder value.
I wouldn't push that one too far (that would be communism) but OTOH I think public denigration of M$ is justified if it damanges the public good indiscriminately in the pursuit of profit. And public rescriction is justified, too.
And will the hospital allow its nurses to bid on shifts at other hospitals? Hmm? I doubt it.

But you can send your resume to as many firms as you wish. Is the hospital going to allow its nurses to bid for shifts at other hosptials as well... hmm? I doubt it.

When you do the calculation, don't forget to take into account that we don't have to invade Iraq to protect our supply of grass.
