IMHO: If the moderators on Slasdot disagree with you then you get modded Troll or Flamebait. If they agree with you then you are Interesting or Informative. They might just as well change moderation to only two choices Agree-Disagree.

When a person brings up any topic in an open debate then that topic becomes fair game for everyone else to comment on. That's why John Kerry should not have made his military service the centerpiece of his campaign.

It will take a while for MS to build _any_ trust in the OSS/FSS communities, especially the Free Software community.

Look at it from Microsoft's perspective. Why should Microsoft make an effort to gain the respect of the OSS community? Is that even possible? Is there anything Microsoft could do that would gain the friendship of OSS'ers without damaging it's shareholders? Oh, and before you dismiss the shareholders, remember that many Slashdotter's have 401k's and it's a rare 401k that doesn't hold some Microsoft stock.

Why do you think that "no one had a clue about what to do with Iraq once the war was over"? I'm not sure it is over with Bathists setting off car bombs. But, nevertheless a government is being established and Iraqis are enlisting in the army and police. Did anyone really think that the whole thing would be over in 20 months and travel agents would be booking tours of Iraq by now? After WWII the occupation of Germany lasted 10 years. Japan was occupied until 1952.

Walmart is rolling out new NEC POS systems. Quite often the self checkout terminals are down. When they go down you can see the Windows XP desktop. Look, I actually like XP (go ahead flame me) but what kind of idiot builds a retail POS system on Windows? Desktop OS's belong on the desktop not on a cash register. Also, the price checking stations posted throughout the store are being converted over to Windows CE. What was wrong with the old ones? I suspect it is that the new ones can display color graphics advertisements. Unfortunately they are down most of the time.

Get an Aiptek PenCam, preferably an older one. It will take AVI movies without sound. You can get about 2 minutes on a 256 SD card. Its movies are basically a bunch of still shots. The camera weighs very little and a decent sized party-type helium balloon will lift it easily. With the balloon you don't waste time getting it launched and it's easy to position exactly where you want it. You can get this camera for @$40 US
