So now I guess everyone is going to talk about how secure Windows Mobile is because there aren't so many exploits targeting it? It's simply a matter of marketshare.
In the PC space, Windows is #1 so there are more high profile attacks against it.
In the mobile space, the iPhone is killing the competition so people are attacking it.
The only thing surprising about these types of attacks to me is that they only seem to make headlines in the geek press. An issue like this targeting a desktop (no matter who makes it) would be all over the news since they seem to enjoy spreading FUD. If they broadcast this, they'll have people cancelling data plans and buying Tracphones by the end of the day. But, it's rare to ever hear about mobile vulnerabilities outside of the tech circles even though the mobile market is huge.
If you're concerned about your IP getting stolen, back it up offline. If anything ever happens and you need to go after that IT company, take your backed up data (back it up again somewhere else) to a lawyer and sue them for your losses, plus some.
If you're realllllly paranoid, save the money on the outsourced IT and spend it on training someone you do trust to do the job, and still keep offline backups.
I'm just shocked that no one ever thought to change the password! Even a weak password is better than default. I guess someone will be writing a 10 page paper, aka, an SOP.
Backup to something other than another online server. Tapes aren't all too expensive when you consider what's been lost. I feel sorry for them simply because some jerk with nothing better to do decided to destroy 13 years of someone's life. It sucks for the company to learn a lesson in this way. Maybe they can get some tools and try to do a drive recovery, if the hacker didn't do a true scrub with something like the Gutmann method.
I agree that nuclear batteries would be a great idea in theory. I'm not a NASA employee, or scientist, but I would venture a guess that the risk is not worth the reward just yet. Imagine the first time one of those suckers breaks apart on liftoff....
"We're sorry ladies and gentlemen, Florida is now closed. We hope you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to seeing you when we reopen in 30 years. Thank you and goodbye."
I have Vonage and a home security system that has to seize the line to call out. All you have to do to make it work is go outside to the box where you phone line comes in and create a loopback. Plug the line from your router into a phone jack rather than the phone itself and, voila, not only will your home security system work but you also get dialtone to every jack in your home.
Hi, I'm a Mac I don't get viruses and you can do everything that you want with me
Hi, I'm a Mac, I realize that you didn't turn me on, I've been posessed...but you still don't have a virus.
Hi, I'm a Mac, what do you mean I was hijacked and someone installed a virus on me..but..but..Windows has a virus too!!
I've got to say, it seems that a lot of people still haven't grasped the fact that this is Beta software. There have been changes since the public beta went live already that have increased performance / fixed reported issues. Does anyone remember the first few builds of Longhorn? You could barely get it to install. I honestly don't think that MS should have put out a public beta, not yet at least, too many people are acting as if it's the final code and condemning it.
By the way, the rating issue is something that has already been addressed and MS is working on changing it to make it more reflective of the systems that exist today. I have a x64 3500+ and it's showing a 5 for performance rating.
Just keep an open mind that Betas historically are released with the intent of getting feedback and fixing it before the Release Candidates (where MS should have started the public releases) are out.
My 3 year old is allowed to play on Xbox Live, but, only with his cousins while supervised. It's not a deathmatch on Halo, but, he's interacting with his family and learning hand eye coordination skills. What's wrong with allowing your kids to have some fun? This patent would be a good thing for parents who want to allow their children to have a good time without having to worry about some 30 year old idiot playing mutiplayer on Fusion Frenzy cursing them out and using racially charged statements. As it stands, when my son is old enough to play something more interactive than Bejewled, he's going to have to play without the Communicator. Hopefully MS will make this a parental setting and we'll be able to attach the setting to a profile.
So, to answer your question, any good parent would allow a 9 year old to play on Live. The fucked-up parent allows them to play on Live without supervision.
