Much as we all enjoy reading about how Lucus raped your childhood, his movies are probably only a small part of why he is getting this award. The man is directly responsible for much of the technology behind modern film making - nonlinear editing, sound post-production and reproduction, digital effects, virtual sets, virtual extras, and now he is a leading force in digital film. Not to mention the great strides he made in marketing and licensing:) All these techniques were developed for his projects, and there is not a film made today that does not use them in some way. He is certainly more deserving than 2001's winner - Barbra Streisand!
Actually I do, I have just looked it up. Each chunk contains a type and a length field. A badly constructed parser that trusts the length field could easy crash, or worse.
That will help in this case, becuase the malicious code downloads other programs, but what if the code just looks for JPGs on your local drive to modify. Pictures get emailed around so often these days that the virus would still spread at a decent rate. The code could also contain its own backdoor software, IRC client, etc. Remember with a buffer overflow the code is executing in another program that already has rights to the network, so personal firewalls don't help.
That is not quite true. Its been a while, but if I recall correctly WAV files are chunked, with each chunk having a small header specifying things like the type of audio (byte-order, etc) and length.
I can easily believe that an incorrectly formatted wav could crash a badly designed parser.
I'll love to know more details about this. My guess it was meant to be some sort of faceoff to represent the battle of wits between Aragorn and Sauron though those magic seeing balls.
I guess I will have to wait for the release to find out.
Its a pity that the link doesn't go into more detail, but the more the merrier. The extended editions of the first two movies were great improvements on already excellent films (especially the first one), so I have high hopes for Return of the King. On a totally unrelated note, here is some sophisticated LotR humor in the form of a 2meg wmv file.
This is a good idea, 2 factor authentication (something you know - password, something you have - RSA gadget) should be manditory for serious transactions. I have seen this things before, they are simple, small, rugged and do not need to be interfaced with the computer so that they can be used anywhere without special hardware. Even if you have sniffed, bribed, or tortured your way into knowing the password, you will not be able to log on unless you also have the gadget - its a good solution.
That was a mistake, but one they have already addressed. In Attack of the Clones, Jango Fett bashes his head on the door of his ship as he is fleeing from Obi Wan. In the directors commentary on the DVD, Lucas mentions that this is a deliberate joke to establish that Jango (and hence his clones) are sometimes a bit clumsy around doors.
Product placement in movies is nothing new, its been going on for decades (ET is full of it for example). Depending on the movie, a significant percentage on the production costs can be offset by accepting product placement deals and having your hero drink a nice can of Coca Cola(tm) to quench his thirst. Basically, any time you see a recognisable logo in a movie, money has changed hands.
What is next? I can just see some of the classic movies, improved with product placement. I can just imagine Citizen Cane where everyone where's nike shoes and drinks Pepsi.
This has already happened to an extent. For older movies from the 1980s, often the original product placement deal has expired and the movies have been altered to show other products when shown on TV.
Of course, being SciFi not even Lucas could manage to squeeze any product placement in the StarWars films.
Jedi Don't Scream
This is a good, it sounded stupid. Kudos to Lucas for correcting a mistake
Boba Fett has a new voice
Again, not a bad for consistency.
A new and improved Jabba
Thank god, the SE scene looked incredible dumb. Hopefully they have also removed the Han walking over Jabba's tail bit with some creative editing. Actually, I wish that the whole scene was removed, or greatly shortened since Greedo basically repeats all the information to Han later on.
The emperor's new clothes
Fair enough, since we all know by now that Palpatine is the emperor (or do we...)
The big finale
Everyone seems to be complaining about this, but I think it makes sense. The picture circulating on the net looks a bit stupid though, seeing Christensen smiling untouched at the end looks somehow wrong. He could at least look a bit guilty for wiping out the Jedi. Still the original wasn't much better.
You could have saved yourself a couple of minutes by just reading the linked article which included that exact information.
Where do I submit my nomination?
