If it did I believe Iraq would then be left to fend for itself as political pressure would say let them fight for their own country while we protect our interests elsewhere.

True, that's basically what we did to Afghanistan. The UN helped a little bit, but Afghanistan is basically in the shitter, and it's questionable if they'll pull themselves out of their current crisis anytime soon.

I'll agree with you that another draft is unlikely. With all the technology like stealth bombers, smart bombs, predator drones, surveilance devices and some very skilled special forces, the US can cause a fair amount of damage with a fraction of the force that we used in bigger wars like Vietnam & WWII.

Barring another war taking place on US soil there will not be a draft.

Why does it need to be on US soil? Another sizable war taking place anywhere would use up the existing reservists.

China & N. Korea have been getting a little more agressive lately, if you haven't noticed. And we may still need to contend with another big terrorist network based in yet-another country.

Bless their hearts, but let's not forget that reservists and guard units aren't as experienced or trained as the full-time units. They are not as capable, and we would still need to move some of the experienced units from the existing fronts to the new front.

Thanks genius, but that doesn't answer any of my questions.

Here's another one of my top gripes about Linux. I ask a question, and I get a stupid answer from dumb snot who clearly doesn't understand the question.

Listing the packages is easy. But your solution doesn't deal with patchlevels at all, or show how to verify the installed packges in a patchlevel, or check to see if any files are missing from the packages, etc. You can do some of this stuff with individual packages, but not with clusters of patches.

I can do that in the big Unixes, but the concept seems foreign to Linux users. It's sad, really.

  6. Re:Evidence of problems with packaging systems on Debian Upgrade May Cause Serious Breakage · · Score: 1

The upshot to this situation is that the given system is verifyable. i.e. I can have a script go through and ensure that everything that should exist does exist.

This is probably one of my biggest gripes about Linux.

The larger Unix OS's like Solaris & AIX have 'patchlevels' which seem to meet some of your criteria. To upgrade your the OS, you install a patchlevel on top of your existing OS. It's easy to verify all components of the OS.

You know exactly what the OS contains--- "Solaris 5.9 build 100041-23" contains Kernel version X.Y.Z, C compiler X.Y.Z, C libraries X.Y.Z.

Want to see the patchlevel? Simply type 'uname -a'. Want to check the signatures of all binary software on the system or check for missing or modified files? It's easy to do with a few commandline utilities.

With Linux it's the opposite. You need to check the version of each individual package. You have an md5 string to compare against the .deb, .rpm or .tar.gz file, but how can you verify all components in the system?
