Raise your hand if you have been laid off, or know someone who has been laid off, by the publishers of Next Gen magazine. (It was Imagine Publishing, then Imagine Media, and now parts have been spun off or renamed to be "Future USA").
Those people were like the EA of the gaming magazine world. It wasn't at all unusal to see 50 people (out of 200 employees) laid off one day, and 50 people hired the next day to work on some new magazine, only to get laid off one year later, with 50 people hired the next week to work on some new-new magazine.
That's partially because Apache runs on Windows, which doesn't use syslog by default. Syslog also runs differently on different Unixes, and since not all Unixes are open-source, you can't always fix it.
Whatever your logging strategy, please remember to rotate your logfiles.
You'd be amazed how many Internet applications crash simply because the logs fill up the partition that hosts the application.
This problem was threefold, because:
1. The logfiles should never get that size 2. Logs should usually exist on a seperate partition like/var or your custom directory under/a 3. People usually ignore the messages in a Production debug log
I run 12 moderate websites. We easily generate 5GB of logfiles a week (Rotated). It used to be 10GB, but then I switched off debug logging and fixed the most common errors.
When I started my current job 1 year ago, I deleted 40GB of logs which ran back to year 2000.
You probably haven't been browsing for too long. The memory usage increases over time. Check again in 4-5 hours.
For me, Firefox to use 30Mb of ram if I've only been browsing for an hour, but will easily hit 70Mb after a day or more of browsing. Right now I'm at 44Mb after browing to 6 sites over the last 30 minutes. I have 5 tabs open now.
I often leave Firefox open for a week at a time, and just close open new tabs as needed.
That's amazingly like this guy, who says that Stephen King killed John Lennon.
Check out his findings of "government codes in major magazines", such as in "Letters to the Editor" in the US News & World Report from the . He randomly circled "Mark" "David" and "Chapman" in three different letters, and says that "Mark David Chapman" is the name of the true killer.
But ratings can be a useful supplement to good parenting. Honestly-- are you a parent? Do you have any experience being a good parent?
Movies & TV shows have ratings, why not video games? Why do video games deserve some special hands-off treatment?
The movie ratings are set and policed by the industry and have been successful for the most part (I'm sure many of you disagree).
Video game companies do a really half-hearted job at setting & policing ratings, as evidenced by the number of minors who purchase the mature games (I'm not even talking about minors who have parents who buy the games for them, I'm talking about the minors). The government gave the industry a chance, and the industry has failed miserably.
I hate that stupid site. It screams "Liberal Crackpot" like few other sites, and makes the Left look pretty fucking stupid.
Did it ever occur to the authors that if they want to be taken seriously, perhaps they shouldn't use the 'Cheap MTV video' format. Maybe that shit works to get 13-year olds to buy more bling-bling, but it doesn't work for the rest of us.
Oh, and maybe remove some of the moronic logical fallacies of their argument. "It sounded like a missle". Gee, how convincing.
You should spend the rest of your time at IBM running down the halls screaming "Transformers: MORE THEN MEETS THE EYE" and playing Gobots like I did on the playground.
Do people who vote Green realize that the Green Party is for caps on how much a person can make in one year?
Sounds like a myth promoted by the right-wing.
The green party is not for any such government-controlled or mandatory earnings limit. If you could please provide your evidence, maybe I could argue. For reference, here's the Green Platform.
The greens do favor a traditionally sustainable economy, where there would be natural salary limits, but that's always existed-- Chop down all the trees, you'll lose your job. Overfarm the land, and you can't grow crops anymore.
There are no mandatory caps, which is very relevant to information businesses which use very little natural resources except for energy.
And for the record, I don't agree 100% with the Green Party's platform. Nor do I agree 100% with the platform for any political party. I do agree with the Greens more then any other party, which is why I am a member.
I like the Big-L Libertarian platform, but I feel that many people who call themselves libertarian are mostly interested in low taxes, and don't really believe in many aspects of personal liberty. I've just met too many 'libertarians' who were homophobic or beleived in strong drug control.
It's really sad. I've been following Snopes for about 13 years. We had a couple nice debates on Usenet:)
Over the years, he has become less and less objective and inserts his falsely-relevant Republican views into his articles more and more. A couple times he has even appologized for his poltical grandstanding and editied the articles.
We all know that Al Gore misspoke when he said he invented the Internet.
But truth be told, Al Gore did more to bolster the internet then any other politician. Without his work, it's doubtful that many people outside the scientific, academic & military community would be using the Internet today.
There are also many private citizens who did a ton of work to bolster the Internet. Many of them deserve awards too.
And for the record, I voted for Nader. I lost faith in Gore and the Democrats, but I still like alot of the work that Gore did before he became VP. It's sad that he shut up during his 8 year run as VP.
Not until it runs well on our existing Windows boxes, and can access a central server for Calendaring, etc.
Hopefully it's not too far off. I am eagerly anticipating the stable releases of Novell's port of Evolution to Windows.

I absolutely agree, but forgot to put that in my post.
Log rotation should definately be flexible.
MySQL is MUCH cheaper then Oracle, DB2 or SQL Server. It can easily cost $25,000 just to install Oracle (License, time, machine, consultant).
The business case for MySQL is "free as in beer."
The business case for MySQL is 'low cost for support', 'installs in 5 minutes', 'small resource usage' and 'simple to use'.
However, I wouldn't recommend it for any large application.
Yes I've heard of it. I donate money to it. What's your argument? OpenOffice demonstrates that there is more to the world then just the web & email.
In addition, OpenOffice doesn't have a replacement for Outlook, which is the only MS application mentioned in my post.
Apache and many others decided to roll their own.
That's partially because Apache runs on Windows, which doesn't use syslog by default. Syslog also runs differently on different Unixes, and since not all Unixes are open-source, you can't always fix it.

The computer using experience for most is: email, web surfing (this includes shopping on eBay) and gaming.
Your post mostly refers to home users.
What about word processing and other office applications, which is the #2 application in my office (after Email/Outlook)?
Apparently he doesn't hate Spam as much as I do.
The spammers are still walking around, and still have their FINGERS.

Sure, it's useful once in a while. I never said it wasn't.
But I'd bet you a beer that 95% of Text Messages are sent simply because it's trendy.
Most messages aren't sent from a noisy place, or from a place where phone calls are not allowed such as the movie theatre or library.
It's a fad, pushed by the phone companies to make some extra cash.
Newsflash:
Voice is faster then either Text Messaging or Morse Code, it's already included with your phone plan, and it doesn't make you look like an idiot.
Yeah, but BOFH in a *comic* format, with *pictures* sort of goes against the whole BOFH mythos. What, you think this stuff is supposed to be easy?

I'm just not a big fan of this conspiracy theory. The arguments are pretty outdated, and ignore alot of evidence that has been published since.
Honestly, they're suggesting a massive conspiracy amongst the hundreds of investigators and support staff. Pretty far fetched.

Humor has limits, and what you just said was not really clueful.

Yeah, but if you want to adjust the intensity of the saber beam, you need to hit the big, green 'Start' button, go to "Settings: Control Panel", etc.
building a lightsaber is supposed to show that the Jedi has mastered the Force.
Yeah, but with Gentoo you can build your own lightsaber with 'emerge lightsaber'.

Snopes is losing his reputation.
No. The Supreme Court decided to stop the recount, because after all, they've been friends for a long time and go way back.
Scratch your back if you scratch mine.
