This isn't a "Linux" box by any conventional wisdom. It uses a multimedia processor to do decoding, which means it has hardware unlike anything in your existing Linux machines. It also has device drivers specific to that hardware, which certainly isn't compiled into any Linux kernel you currently use.
So no, GPL isn't going to spare you the $100 these guys are asking for. But for less than the cost of a Windows license, how could you complain?
