Yeah, but
A. Will m$ ever admit they cause loss of data w/out blaming 3rd party software?
B. Can you prove that windows caused it? "Yeah, it was this line of code in your source, right here"...
To me, whether steam is a waste or not depends on what else Valve does with it. If all I get out of Steam is the ability to play halflife2 single-player, then it's a ripoff (since I don't play CS). But if Valve comes out with a multiplayer ver of hl2 in 6 months, and distributes it through steam, then it's worthwhile.
My friends & I are all contract coders in Seattle, and as far as we're concerned, this is the beginning of the end for the freelance developer in the US.
One friend was working on a 20-person project with 2 phases for microsoft. Phase 1 just completed, phase 2 got outsourced to India. Why? Because the group at msoft funding the project just received a mandate that 80% of their dev work will be outsourced.
Of that 20-person team, one guy had no problem getting another job: Washington Mutual hired him to PM an outsourced project (he speaks Hindi).
Microsoft probably accounts for 1/2 of the dev jobs out here. And since just cancelled their new campus here in Seattle, and are building a new 250,000 sq ft facility in Hyberadad, I would say the outlook is not great. Meanwhile, you have Balmer saying "Dont worry guys, most of the jobs will stay here". Yeah, and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain either.
Myself and 2 friends all have the Karma, and have all experinced the scarry lockup. But amazingly, they seem to work fine in spite of this strange phenomenon (I've had mine for almost a year now).
The sound quality is great, that's the main reason I went with the Karma. I believe the signal/noise ratio is 95 (higher than iPod). Just make sure you play Oggs and Flacs to take advantage of it. This also was the only player that supported Flacs at the time I purchased.
That is $0.25 a track. Much cheaper than everywhere else.
Except allofmp3.com, which sells songs for about $0.02 a track. Yay for our comrades in Russia.
They are encoding at 192Kbit/s VBR. That's near CD quality
Nah, 320 is near-CD quality. To my ear, 192 still sux. Oh, and allofmp3.com lets you choose your own encoding rates, the only site I've seen so far that allows up to 320.
Why not make:
- McDonalds liable for making me fat
- Fox network for making me stupid
- The sun for making me sunburned
etc.etc.

Sam actually wanted to direct the remake, but unfortunately the film's investors had this to say regarding his request:
"I got news for you pal, you ain't leading but two things right now: Jack, and Sh*t...and Jack left town."
