There are numerous problems with opening electronic voting.
First of all I can't think of a single programmer or comapany who wants to be responsible for the security precautions necessary for that.
Second of all technology has not been around long enough for the general public to be comfortable enough with it to allow online voting. Which means it would most likely loose more votes then it garnered.
Thirdly you loose the social aspects of voting which many Americans enjoy and even list as the main reason they vote.
