I also work in the finance industry analyzing and testing performance software performance. I would love to hear more about how you do 1/5th of a microsecond price feeds if you're game. This is clearly not possible without some custom hardware (you mention VHDL). Could you please tell us more about this hardware and what kind of logic resides in it vs regular software running on the hosts cpu(s)? BTW, this is a terrific presentation on HPC Finance using Java: http://www.infoq.com/presentations/LMAX

Is there any chance you use this technology to generate electricity at the treatment plant? Ie urea -> hydrogen -> electricity via fuel cells? If so it sounds like it would be a useful for turning urea into water while powering the treatment plant itself at the very least?

  3. In a world filled with youtubes... on Democracy Player Is Dead, Long Live Miro · · Score: 1

Will Miro catch on? I was playing around with Democracy/Miro a couple of weeks ago. Its looking pretty slick. But it seems to me that its only real advantage over youtube and its clones is its Bittorrent syndication ability. Yet I had a hard time finding any content through the client that was actually served as torrents. I suppose the ecosystem needs to evolve still, but it was discouraging to me.

  4. Here's mine on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1

I bought a nice little laptop backpack from Mountain Equipment Co-op for $56 CDN, so around ?$40? US + shipping. MEC is known for their quality (its a co-operative) and costumer loyalty. I bought it because I trust MEC, the price is right and it didn't look like it carried a laptop. I've been very happy with it so far. Very comfortable. I can fit my laptop cables with lots of extra space. They ship to US and Canada. http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PROD UCT%3C%3Eprd_id=520877&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=67603 3&bmUID=1097459387480 Cheers
