I actually ran win2k3 server for my desktop os a couple different times and it seemed maybe 10% faster than 2k overall and 25% faster than xp. The crazy thing was every single app and game (ut 2004, doom3, even a bunch of older games) I tried ran perfectly and didn't complain about the os version or anything. Here is a cool page on how to convert 2k3 into a usable desktop system (needs to have video acceleration turned on, the audio service, directx acceleration turned up, etc etc) http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/

hmm just got to thinking more about my previous post if you had say 200mb of ram used to boot up and the rest is empty ie 0's those should compress to nearly nothing so you might end up with a 100mb or so file for 1gb of ram compressed to disk if 800mb wasn't even being used.

Don't forget it would be quite simple to compress the memory file, I have no idea what kind of compression you would get on it but I'd bet 2:1 at least :)

  6. Re:Why will I want to upgrade? on Longhorn Beta Begins · · Score: 1

Yeah the biggest change seems to be they made winxp swap out continuously even with 1gig of ram, so thats why I "upgraded" to win2k from xp so I can watch my hd light actually stay off for minutes at a time instead of constantly thrashing away. Oh and on server 2003 I actually ran it on my home comp for a while since it is faster than 2000 (and obviously way faster than xp bloatware) but the funny thing is I have this crappy satellite uplink dialup program i have to run that crashes and uses 100% cpu and win2k3 totally grinds to a halt and you basically have to hit the reset button to kill it (or wait literraly 5mins for task manager to come up) you would think ms would have tweaked their new great server os to handle 100% cpu eating programs better than 2k (can kill it in 10secs top vs 2k3).

  7. how to block archive.org from archiving your sites on Bittorrent Creator A Digital Pirate? · · Score: 2, Informative

in robots.txt put: User-agent: ia_archiver Disallow: / According to the archive.org policies page: http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/research/conferences/ aps/removal-policy.html this will not only keep them from indexing your sites but remove all content they have archived. Seeing how archive.org is most likely going to get Bram in trouble it got me to think about my adult websites I run that used to have more questionable material before the bush administration, time to add that to all my robots.txt files since the war on porn has recently started via alberto gonzales passing the new 2257 regulations that require ANYONE who uploads a pic/vid/whatever that is "sexually explicit" to have IN HAND model id's, release forms (even though the forms already exist at the original production studio), all alphabetically indexed available 40hours a week for inspection (5 years in prison if your documents aren't up to snuff) of course many parts of this law are blatantly unconstitutional and it is being challened in court by the free speech coalition http://www.freespeechcoalition.com/ .

  8. Re:A flawed business model on Google Sued Over Click Fraud · · Score: 1

Exactly, they need to take a clue from the adult industry that stopped all pay-per-click programs years ago (there are still some but they work on ratios of so many cents per click to number of sales per click so you can't cheat them). The whole point of buying traffic in a pay per click program is you are betting you can make more $ on whatever you are trying to sell vs what you are paying out to get the traffic in the first place, so they just need to figure out some way to track sales (which would be quite hard due to the crazy number of different things being sold and different billing companies etc).

  9. Re:I have a friend on Coping with Gaming Addiction · · Score: 3, Informative

Here is a brilliant article that goes into the genetics of addictions, basically people in the usa have 2 main versions of the dopamine receptor called the a1 and a2 alleles, people with the a1 allele have on average 30% less dopamine in their brains and are more inclined to addictive actions that raise dopamine level (eating, smoking, drinking, drugs, maybe gaming). In the usa the distrubution of dopamine a1 / a2 alleles is 20% to 80% respectively. However when you read many studies of addicts they have the a1 receptor 50%+ of the time (some cases like a study on alcoholics that drank until cirrhosis of the liver its 80%+ that have the a1 allele!). Oh and if your father was a hardcore alcoholic its very likely the gene was passed on to you. Anyways, here is the link to the article. http://www.recoveryemporium.com/Articles/AmSci.htm
