  1. Re:Why should Microsoft care?! on Firefox In Print · · Score: 2, Insightful

Up to this point, I think your view makes sense. With upcoming multimedia focus of MS, I think they probably do want to maintain IE as the leading browser.

But even if they did pay the reviewers off, there are small comments in the reviews that do leak through. For instance: "A surprisingly disappointing story and a fairly short single-player portion are noticeable shortcomings ..." -- GameSpot Review of Halo 2 Just wait a bit until we get feedback from those who have spent their hard-earned money on it and I'll bet that the above quotation will get a lot of illumination!

  3. Re:what is gnoppix for? on Ubuntu For PPC, And As A Live CD · · Score: 4, Informative

Gnoppix Live CD works, whereas for many of us the Ubuntu Live CD does not. Tried all the listed boot options, went over to to morphix.org and tried such of their stuff as seemed possible. No good. The Ubuntu distro looks excellent, but the Gnoppix CD works on my hardware, while Ubuntu does not.

At least some hackers! Two years ago I recommended that a cash-strapped startup use OO on low-end Window machines they had leased since they did not want to buy MS Office. After two weeks of giving it a sincere try (these were biochemists, nanotechs, and such) they decided they could afford MS Office, after all! Complaints were: too slow, not compatible enough, raised the level of profanity in the office, and caused them to stomp up and down and smash treasured possessions. OO has improved a lot. It is faster now. It is more compatible now. But I think MS still regards it as more of a sales tool on Windows than competition! On Linux and FreeBSD it is a very different story. OO is definitely in the running there for ubiquity, distro-upgrade support, completeness of features, and ease of use.
