  1. Re:Two good uses on Would You Use Ad-Supported Windows? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Mod the above post up!! I agree, MS is just looking for another way to invade our computing experience with more junk. The concept of an add supported windows is appealing, but as I see it, if MS didnt charge so much to begin with it would not be an issue at all. When you have to pay $350 for XP pro and there are free alternatives its a little rediculous. I am not saying that one is better cause its free, but instead of adding new features to every release that does nothing but force feed more garbage to the consumer and also confuses the heck out of them to boot, fix things, make them smaller/faster/cheaper. There is no need for new features untill the old ones work right. So getting back the point here, mine is that ad-supported windows would not be needed if they did things better.

Actually if you wanted to get techincal I would say that LFS(Linux from scratch) is more uber geek than gentoo. Having used all three (never finished LFS) I would say that gentoo is considerably more geekish than slackware. Both are equaly as easy/difficult (depending on your skill level) to configure, but gentoo builds everything from scratch. On the note about what the guy said about windows users not haveing preference but thinking that the M$ way was the *right* way... I started with DOS 5.x and moved over the years to Windows XP. I switched to linux because after trying it I noticed a considerable speed advantage over using windows.

The University I attend does not allow us to install programs for lots of reasons. How ever, I can still download putty.exe and ssh anywhere I like. for the last year I have not even logged into the schools network, save for grabbing info from the public share for homework. I have used knoppix cds, and vnc to use my gentoo box at home. Now that I have my laptop, I use a knoppix disc, usb wireless adapter and iptables to create a private access point for my self and some classmates. Linux has only made my computing life easier. Sure there are some hurdles when you first start. But I remember facing the same thing when I was 12 and learning DOS 5. Then along came windows 95, and I was GUI bound till last year when I started with Fedora Core 2. I Qucikly switched to slackware, and now Gentoo (LFS is next). When I was using win 9X I often "hacked" it to start in command line only. That way if I had a problem, which was common in those OSes, I could fix it, and start the GUI. XP came along, and lost all faith in MS. Long story short. I missed the power of the command line, I wished I started using linux sooner, sure it would have been harder. But I would have learnt much more, and possibly could have contributed more to the OSS community.

I have the same notebook, and I have to agree with you. I am using Gentoo, but unless I hack my kernel to bits, I get a squeal from my motherboard that does not happen in windows....

Aside from the fact that he can't spell worth spit, and as much as I want to flame the crap out of that AC, he does have a point. Now before you all start to flame me, I am a die hard gentoo user, a recent convert from MS Windoze. I switched due to the reasons in this article (spyware/adware). Now to my point. Yes Microsoft should have done better, but the fact is they don't care. As long as they keep putting out a new OS, and removing backwards capability and "legacy" features from the newer versions, the general public will eat it up. I am not a m$ fan at any level, but to make jokes about how a BSD or Linux box is unaffected, while its true, is somewhat misguided IMO. I have recently been doing some research on the topic, and I have found that ANY OS is vulnerable. If a person wants to go to a website, and it requires they install an activex control, no matter what you teach them they will click "ok". Anyone here who has ever had to teach their (grand)parents how to use a computer will know what I am talking about. So is it FUD to thank MS for building a platform that we can all profit from? Me personally, I hope they stick around for a while, fixing their mistakes is my bread and butter. Logically one could assume that if/when linux becomes as main stream as m$, it will be under attack in much the same way m$ is now. I feel it should be noted that OSS is not as safe as some people would like to think it is. I installed Firefox on my grandparents computer, and within a week, I found that "MyWebSearch" has apparently written a toolbar for Firefox!! Which is also notably difficult to get rid of.
