If you purchased an older make or one that has been sitting on a shelf for a year, etc, your firmware will be out of date. For me updating the firmware fixed a problem I was having where the player would lock up or shutoff occasionally. So far I have been happy with the player. The battery life is nice, the quality good, size acceptably small, etc.
JUST TO BE REALLY CLEAR HERE, ANYONE WHO IS UNHAPPY WITH THEIR RIO SHOULD FLASH THE FIRMWARE!
